   —Monday evening Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vaughan of 164 Park avenue entertained a group of sixteen at a buffet supper in honor of the birthday anniversary of Mrs. Harry H. Stinson of Cambridge. After a delicious repast, cards were enjoyed, Mrs. Frederick H. Curry winning the prize for ladies, and Mr. Curry for gentlemen.
   —Miss Virginia Hoffman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hoffman of 27 Edmund road, a student at the Fisher Business College, was thrown from her horse at the Woodmoreland Riding Club in Burlington, Sunday morning, when the horse slipped and threw her over its head. Miss Hoffman had several stitches taken at the Symmes Hospital, and is now resting comfortably at home.
   —Mr. and Mrs. Norval F. Bacon of 73 Jason street have not as yet recovered their car stolen over a week ago. About twenty cars were stolen in the vicinity the same evening, and all have been returned to the owners except the Bacons'.

JOHN J. SWEENEY
———
   John J. Sweeney of 18 Pierce street passed away Monday after a long illness. He was born in St. John's [sic], N. B., fifty-seven years ago but had lived in the vicinity of Boston for many years, for the past five years in Arlington. For thirty-three years he had been in the employ of the Boston and Maine railroad as a clerk in the car accountant's office. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Mabel Fox Sweeney; one son, J. Raymond Sweeney, and a grandson, Donald R. Sweeney.
   The funeral was held this morning from his late home. A high mass of requiem was celebrated in St. Agnes Church. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
MRS. JOHN V. KELLY

   The death of Mrs. Gertrude Martin Kelly, the wife of John V. Kelly, occurred on Sunday. She was born in Marlboro, forty-five years ago and had lived in Arlington for the past ten years. She was a member of the Emblem Club, the Tower Association, the Brackett Parent- Teacher Association, and the Sunnyside Improvement Association of Billerica. Besides her husband she is survived by two children—Patricia and Maureen Kelly.
   The funeral was held Wednesday morning from her late home and was followed by a high mass of requiem in St. James' Church, with the pastor, Rev. Maurice J. O'Connor, D. D., as celebrant. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.

JOHN J. AHERN
———
   John J. Ahern of 17 Beacon street passed away Wednesday after an illness of four months. He was born in Arlington, sixty-four years ago, the son of Maurice and Abigail Ahern, and lived here all his life. He was a member of Arlington Council, Knights of Columbus. Surviving him are his widow. Mrs. Agnes Cullinane Ahern, and four children—Miss Mary A. Ahern, Maurice W. Ahern, John J. Ahern, Jr., and Philip D. Ahern, all of Arlington.
   The funeral will be held tomorrow morning at 8:15 from his late home. At nine a solemn high mass of requiem will be celebrated in St. Agnes' Church. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.

   Dr. Nelson B. Baker, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church, was the speaker at the Voice of Youth Hour at the Park Street Congregational Church of Boston Sunday afternoon. The service was broadcast over radio station WHDH.

AT STATE & ORPHEUM

   Beginning today, there will be a new second feature on the same program “The Awful Truth,” which is being held over for a second record-breaking week at both Leow's State and Orpheum theatres.
   The picture is “Murder in Grenwich [sic] Village,” which is another Columbia production and replaces “The Game That Kills.”
   Richard Arlen and Fay Wray are co-starred in the vehicle which is a “behind the scenes” glimpse of the romantic and interesting life of commercial photography its people and its models.

FRANK W. GARRETT

   Frank W. Garrett, for the past thirty years a resident of Arlington Heights, passed away at his home, 7 Tanager st. Monday. Funeral services were held in the Hartwell Funeral Chapel, 792 Mass. ave., Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. John M. Phillips of Hartford, Conn., formerly pastor of Park Avenue Church, Arlington Heights.
   Mr. Garrett was born in Ballston Spa, N. Y., July 19, 1865, and is the last member of his family. His wife, Sarah Eaton Garrett, passed away three years ago last May. Burial was in the family lot in Delaware, Ohio.
   He was for many years superintendent of a department of the Boston Elevated Railway, also connected with the General Electric Company, but more recently with the Avery Radio Service of Arlington until an illness had kept him confined to his home for the past six weeks.

MRS. SARAH A. SPILLER

   The funeral of Mrs. Sarah A. Spiller was held yesterday afternoon with services at her late home, 66 Alpine street. Burial was in Edson cemetery in Lowell. Mrs. Spiller was the widow of the late Dana H. Spiller. She passed away last Sunday.
MRS. M. GERTRUDE KELLY

   A very large number of people attended the funeral of Mrs. M. Gertrude Kelly, late of 48 Pine street, on Wednesday morning when a high mass of requiem was celebrated in St. James' Church. Rev. Maurice J. O'Connor, pastor of the parish, officiated. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
   Mrs. Kelly was the wife of John U. [sic] Kelly. She was born in Marlboro 45 years ago and lived here for the past ten years. She was active in the Emblem club and the Brackett Parent-Teacher Association.
   Besides her husband she leaves two daughters, Patricia and Maureen Kelly.

   Funeral services for the late John J. Ahern of 17 Beacon street, were held this morning. A solemn high mass of requiem was celebrated in St. Agnes' Church. A large delegation of member of Arlington Council, K. of C., of which the late Mr. Ahern was a member, attended the mass. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant cemetery.
   Mr. Ahern passed away on Wednesday. He was the husband of Mrs. Agnes (Cullinane) Ahern. He was born in this town sixty-four years ago.
