ANTHONY A. DOHERTY,
LIFE LONG RESIDENT PASSED AWAY
Former Proprietor of the Central House Succumbs to Long Illness, Was Prominent Business Man
Anthony A. Doherty, a life long resident of this city, passed away at his late home, 3 Charles Street, early this morning after an illness of some duration. He was stricken about a year ago and ever since then he had been unwell, but at times was able to be around. For the past three months he failed continually until early this morning, when death claimed him.

Mr. Doherty was born in Woburn on March [15], 1858, and lived here his entire life. He was one of the most prominent business men of the city twenty-five years ago, having conducted The Central House, Woburn's famous hostelry, for a number of years until it finally closed its doors. The Woburn hotel was the meeting place of the politicians and office holders of the olden days and it was at that famous spot where the events scheduled to happen were conceived and planned.

Mr. Doherty was the genial host of these gatherings and although he was of a quiet and unassuming nature, his personal wishes always prevailed with the groups that dictated the politics of the city of that day. The Central House was always the center of congeniality and hospitality, the extraordinary patronage of the place having been built up around the personality of its proprietor, Mr. Doherty. Besides the conclaves of the politicians, there were varied gatherings of sportsmen, boxing enthusiasts and race horse selectors of the day. When a distinguished guest visited the city, he was usually directed to The Central House where greetings were exchanged with the groups of the city who gathered there.

The deceased is survived by his wife [Josephine] (Carroll) Doherty, three daughters, Mrs. G. Hanson Foster, Mrs. Edward D. Welch and Margaret Doherty of this city, and three sons, Charles and Joseph of this city and Edward, former Holy Cross baseball captain now with the Wilmington, North Carolina team of the Carolina league. One sister, Mrs. Annie Lafferty, also survives.

The funeral arrangements have not been completed as yet, the time and date to be announced as soon as the family can reach Edward, who is in Wilmington, North Carolina.
