EDDIE DOHERTY STARTS ON THIRD SEASON WITH
HOLY CROSS TEAM
Woburn Youth is Natural Catcher and
Has Improved With Experience
Eddie Doherty of Charles Street, this city is starting his third year with Holy Cross varsity ball club. Coach Jack Barry, after seeing Eddie work out in his first game three years ago stated that the Woburn youth is a natural born catcher and he predicts big things for Eddie.

In his first year at Worcester there were five candidates for the back-stop position. Barry soon saw that Doherty was far ahead of the others and from the first game of the season until the present time Eddie has been first string receiver.

"Owney" Carroll, now with Detroit, who last year had a most brilliant season with Toronto, was captain of the team during Eddie's first year at Mt. Saint James. Every college baseball fan is acquainted with Carroll's record and upon the graduation of Tim Ryan the year before, many predicted that the catching department would greatly hamper Carroll's record during the season.

Eddie Doherty of Woburn, more than filled the bill, for besides proving a brilliant receiver, his hitting was a big asset to the team which won the inter-collegiate championship. He handled "Peerless Owney's" slants with ease and his accurate pegs kept the total of stolen bases at a very low mark.

Last year Eddie again had a good season and at the close of the school and college season accepted a position for the summer with the General Tire Co. at Akron, Ohio. The factory team, which is one of the best in the central states, had a regular catcher who was considered good enough for my ball club. Eddie had only been at Akron a little over a week when the star catcher was sitting on the bench and the Woburn youth was out there behind the plate. The General Tire team played exhibition games with several of the big league clubs and Eddie had the honor of catching one of the few no-hit-no-run games against a big league club.

Last summer's experience should count heavily for Eddie and he will bear watching this season for unless we miss our guess, big league scouts will be on his trail before the end of June.

A concert, in keeping with St. Patrick's Day, was presented in the hall of St. Agnes Parochial school. . . .

At the concert Thursday evening, the lucky number was drawn for an automobile: tickets for which had been disposed of prior to the annual reunion of the parish. Mrs. John Barry [nee Elizabeth "Lizzie" G. Roach] of Medford street received the machine.
