The Arlington Advocate, 5 November 1881

In compliance with an order from the Selectmen, issued about two weeks previous, the police officers of Arlington made a raid on some of the beer shops at each end of the town, last Sunday morning, and captured quite a lot of the contraband article. At Mrs. Nickola's, on Bow Street, a barrel of ale and two and one-half gallons of liquors was found. Thomas McCue, on Dudley street, delivered over about ten gallons of ale and five of cider. Thomas Bailey, who lives on the other side of the street, had disposed of any he might have had, only empty barrels being left.

Leaving this haul at Town Hall, the officers visited the other end of the town. Here they captured 15 gallons of ale from Terence Owens; 20 gallons lager and 30 of ale at the house of P. J. Dale, on Decatur street. Michael Lane, on North Union street, gave up 55 gallons of ale (the jug probably going out with the hasty exit of "the old woman," and Daniel Ahern will have to answer for about ten gallons of ale, though he had pulled the plug in the barrel and left the beer running out when he heard the officers were coming.

These places are all situated in private dwellings, though all are fitted with something to serve for a bar and furnished with glasses, pump, etc. We hope the officers will continue their raids and clean out the centre of the town.
