The Arlington Advocate, 31 July 1875

We omitted last week for the sake of hearing the case officially, to give an account of the assault committed the Saturday previous on Mr. Addison (Col.) Brooks, by James Roach and others. The case was set down for last Monday, but by the advice of his attending physician, Judge Carter adjourned the examination to Saturday, July 31st. We have investigated the matter carefully, and the facts are substantially these:

The Thursday previous there were hard words between the parties. On Saturday, Mr. Brooks had occasion to visit a portion of his farm, and passed near Roach and his companions, who are in the employ of another party, and on whose land they were working. Some words that passed between them led Roach to "go for" Brooks with a hoe, and he followed him so closely that Brooks had hardly reached his own land when he was struck down with the hoe, and afterwards pounded and bruised in a fearful manner. He was taken home and medical attendance called, and his wounds, which were of quite a serious nature, dressed. He was able to appear in court last Monday, but was evidently in no condition to give testimony. The assailant or assailants, as the case may prove, were released on giving bonds.
