A MILITARY BOUNTY IMPOSTER. Some time since we mentioned the arrest of a female for drawing bounty- money from the city by false pretenses. Another similar case has happened. Patrick Tully enlisted in this city last summer, leaving a wife here, who shortly after went to Nashua, N. H., where she has been at work ever since. Her friends there told her that she was entitled to a bounty, and the other day she came to Lowell, and, upon calling at the treasurer's office, found that the money had been drawn out regularly by a married sister of her husband, named Betsey Donnelly, but who signed her name as Eliza Tully, and claimed to be the wife of Patrick. She has received in all $24. The city marshall was notified of the matter and Mrs. Donnelly has been arrested. Her husband's name is Patrick Donnelly ; he lives on Crosby st., and works for O. M. Whipple. Here is another reason for the appointment of a smart, capable man as treasurer of the committee, whose duty it shall be to look up these cases. The salary of such a man could be more than saved every year. |

POLICE COURT. This forenoon, Elizabeth Gray, for fornication with Patrick Glynn, was sent to jail for three months, and Glynn, for adultery, was ordered to the superior court. Susannah Burke and Ann Rafferty, common drunkards, were convicted, and Susannah was sent to the house of correction for three months and Ann was fined $5 and costs. Dennis Russell, for breaking glass, was discharged. A. W. Bailey, for pasturing cattle in the streets, paid the costs and was discharged. A number of similar cases will be attended to shortly, and the street marshall is bound to punish all such violations of the city ordinances. |
