1. PAUL
Church of St. Mary the Virgin- Sheviock, Cornwall
Paul was one of John Winter's men at Richmond Island in 1639 as his wife was paid 5/. They had run up quite a debt at the "company store" as he owed 6/6 "for Commodities in ye house", 14/6 "for wine", 9/8/6 "for so much pd him by Mr Trelawne wth adventure", 11d "for sider & oyle", 9/9 "for aquavite at his first Coming over".(1) Paul was one of the men who agreed to stay after their three year term of service had expired. On 6 Apr. 1643: "Paul Michell of Sheviock in the Countie of Cornewall, Sayler" was again indentured to Trelawny and Winter.(2)
Paul settled in Saco, opposite Richmond Island, after leaving Trelawny's service.
Paul died in Boston evidently being drowned along with Jonathan Hollicu, Roger Hunnewell, and Jonathan Rowland as the administration was granted 5 Apr. 1654: "yt Robert Booth, Rich: Hitchcocke, Hen: Waddocke & Will: Scadlocke, are impowered as administrators to take ye goods of Jon Hollicu, Roger Hunnewell, Paul Michaell & Jon Rowland into yr hands & to receave all debts due unto Jon Sparke & Christopher Hobbs, wt they can make appere as justly due unto them, for there disburts upon yr fishing vioage & wt shall remaine in yor hands, you are to returne an account: yrof unto ye next County Court."(3)
None of the information available on Paul connects him with any of the people listed below. Perhaps further research will prove this link. There is a tradition in the Freeport family that Christopher came to this country with the name of Beckwith and that he was adopted by the Mitchell family and therefore took their name.(4)

On 10 Sept. 1672 Philip Atwell was fined "16s... for his contempt in Cutting of the lyne... & Christopher Michell and John Billine 5s a peece and with an admonition are discharged."(4)

3V. JOSEPH (PAUL 1, CHRISTOPHER 2)
b.c.1673 Kittery, ME
m. 1702 JOANNA COUCH
inv. 12 Nov. 1746 Kittery
Joseph received a 15 acre grant of land from the town of Kittery on 16 May 1694 and a 10 acre grant on 24 May 1699.
On 29 May 1701 Joseph purchased from Robert Andross of the Isles of Shoals, for 25, 50 acres of land and 5 acres of marsh.(1)
Joseph was taxed 3/10 in 1712.(2)
In Aug. 1722 it was ordered that several houses "be made Defencible at Kittery" and it was commanded "that Joseph Mitchell's house be fortified, And that ye Inhabitants & familys from Joseph Billings to John Whitney Inclusively Lodge therein."(3)
The "Lower Parish" was organized in 1714 and on 30 Mar. 1715 the church covenant was accepted by Joseph who had pew number 8. Joseph contributed 15 to the new church in 1726.(4) Unfortunately the church burned to the ground only three years later. The next meeting house was then built and is still standing. As Joseph and his son Joseph Jr. were carpenters they were probably very involved in the construction of this building.
On 3 Aug. 1723 Joseph sold to Joseph Billings 10 acres of land in Kittery bounded by Billngs, William Dearing, Christopher Mitchell, Richard Mitchell and Joseph, at Brave Boat Harbor which he had purchased from William Godsoe. The 10 acre lot was given in exchange for 3 1/2 acres of marsh: "which I had laid out to me by ye Committee for deviding of my Grand father John Andrewes Estate". The deed was witnessed by Richard Cutt Jr. and Joseph Billing Jr.(5)
On 6 Apr. 1728 John Varrel, fisherman, of Kittery mortgaged 12 acres of land and the house to Joseph for 13/4.(6)
Joseph bought 38 acres of land and 3 1/2 acres of marsh, bounded by Col. Pepperrell, Joseph Billings, Joseph Couche, Joseph Mitchell and the marsh at Brave Boat Harbor, for 150 from Elizabeth Mannering, widow of Thomas Mannering, and grand-daughter of John Andrews.(7) Joseph then sold half of this property 2 Sept. 1736 for 75 to Benjamin and Joshua Mitchell, ship carpenters, of Newbury, MA. The deed was witnessed by Eunice Cutt and Samuel Varrell.(8) Joseph then purchased all of William Andrews interest in the estate of John Andrews for 15 on 31 Jan. 1736/7.(9) He then purchased from William and Mary Trickey of York, 5 Mar. 1739/0, for 10 "all our right and Interest we have in our Grandfather John Andrews's Estate late of Kittery & our Father Robert Andrews.. both Decd... being in the Town of Kittery". This deed was witnessed by Sarah and Joseph Cutt.(10)
On 2 Aug. 1735 Joseph sold to Joseph Jr. one acre of marsh in Braveboat Harbor for 12.(11) On 4 June 1745 Joseph sold to his son Samuel for L50 his homestead where he was living.(12)

m.1. 2 Feb. 1735 Kittery, ME, LYDIA SEWALL (b. 24 Jan. 1716/7, d. of Samuel & Lydia (Storer) Sewall of York, d. 8 June 1770 Kennebunk)

d. 3 Apr. 1799 Kennebunk
On 7 Nov. 1732 Solomon, Richard and John bought from John Jordan of Falmouth for 150, 150 acres at the northerly part of Portland Head.(1) John Mitchell of Kittery, mariner, then bought out his brother Solomon for 60 on 29 Jan. 1735/6 and then sold the 100 acres 31 Jan. 1736 for 300 to Joseph Strout, Joseph Atwood, John Smalley, Anthony Strout, mariners, and Thomas Delano, blacksmith, all of Falmouth as John Mitchell of York, mariner.(2)
On 1 June 1742 John Mitchell of York, mariner, purchased from David and Martha Lawson for 600, 100 acres in Wells at the mouth of Mill Creek up to the highest part of Rocky Hill.(3) John built his house here as well as a garrison.
John Mitchell's Garrison- built c.1742
John signed a petition to create a separate township 5 Apr. 1749 and again as an agent from Wells 6 June 1749.(4) He then signed a Kennebunk petition for a separate township 30 May 1750.(5) He signed a Wells petition for shire-town status 27 May 1761.(6)
John also built the first wharf on the west side of the Kennebunk River where the first ship built on this River was constructed by John Bourne in 1755. This ship was owned by Richard and Nathaniel Kimball and Robert Elliot of Salem and was of about 80 tons. There is some evidence to show that Stephen Titcomb and John built the schooner Endeavor in 1747 at this spot. John was taxed in 1750 for 3/10 by the town of Wells. In 1751 he was elected constable.
John joined the new church of the second parish in Wells in Jan. 1751. At the first meeting 6 Aug. 1751 he was chosen clerk and on 25 Aug. he was chosen one of three assessors for the church rate. He also was involved on a committee to consult with the minister as to his ordination and in 1755 he was on a committee to buy a piece of land for a parsonage.
On 16 Jan. 1775 John along with Stephen Larrabee were a "committee of donations for the Poor of the town of Boston" giving 26 3/4 cords of wood by way of Capt. Ebenezer Hovey. On 23 Jan. 1775 John was on "a committee to prepare instructions to guide the actions of the delegate (Ebenezer Sayer) in Congress". He was on the Committee of Correspondence and Safety on 18 Mar. 1776. During the collection of clothing to be sent to the Continental Army in Apr. 1778 he gave one pair of stockings and one pair of shoes.
From a letter to Frank Littlefield dated 19 Jan. 1935 George Gillpatrick quotes: "I am going to send you an exact copy of a letter that I received from Isaac M. Emery of K. lower Village the year is not given but it was late 1890 or early 1900
Kennebunk port Apr. 3
Mr. Geo. A Gilpatric
Dear Sir
Your lately received If I could meet you I could give you the whole history of the Mitchell family in this vicinity John Mitchell came here about 1736 bought two hundred acres of land of Sir William Ppperill on Kennebunk River (his house still standing) His third son Samuel was born Dec 20 1742 and settled at Cat Mousam on the farm that Charles Webber used to live Samuel had a sister Lydia born Nov 13 1744. I well remember your Neighbor Elisha he decended from this family. Another John Mitchell lived one mile from Mousam Village on the road to the branch. He was a Nova Scotian was brought here from there in 1756 and I well remember Cooper Mitchell as they used to call him by one of his decendants. N.S. John Sen. Had 13 children Yours truly Isaac M Emery" (7). Mr. Emery has some of his facts wrong concerning the land purchase on the Kennebunk River, however, it makes interesting reading.

At this point James' origins are not clear. I suspect he is connected with the above John Mitchell of Kennebunk and is probably his grandson or perhaps a relation of Nova Scotia John mentioned in the letter above.
James was listed in the 1850 census and was living with his daughter Elizabeth, her husband Josiah Langley and their family. In 1860 James, age 84, a sailor, was living with his daughter Hannah, age 50 who was keeping house. They were living next door to Elizabeth and Josiah as well as his son Humphrey and his wife Betsey and their family. All of them were sailors.(1)
