JONES

JONES

1. TEAGUE

Teague appears in Yarmouth, MA 28 Oct. 1645 among the five soldiers from Yarmouth who were on the expedition against the "Narrohiggansets" and their allies.(2) He was not on the list of men able to bear arms in 1643 so he was either not in the area or was under age 16.

Teague was a litigant in the court in Plymouth on several occasions. On 7 July 1646 a case listed at "Teag jones vs Ralph Wheilden" was tried in court.(3) At the General Court held at Plymouth on 29 Oct. 1649 "Teage Joanes complaineth against Edward Sturges in an action for slander to the dammag of an hundred pound, and a verdict was rendered for the defendant."(4) Also in 1649 Richard Berry accused Teague of the crime of sodomy and other unclean practices with Sarah, wife of Hugh Norman. At court 6 Mar. 1649/0 Richard confessed that he had lied and was punished by whipping at the post in Plymouth.(9) Richard and his wife Alice were quite the characters. He was fined for playing cards and smoking in church and arrested for stealing an axe. Alice was often in court for stealing bacon and eggs, a neckcloth and various other items of clothing and was fined for milking a neighbor's cow. As she refused to pay for the mild she was forced to sit in the stocks at Yarmouth for an hour! Teague and Richard must have patched things up as in 1653 they were ordered "to part their uncivil living together". At the Plymouth Court on 4 Oct. 1655 Teage Jones accused Masshantampaine of stealing a gun from him, but the jury decided in favor of the Indian.(5) "The Fines of October Court, 1660. This following convicted for refusing to take the oath of fidelitie att this Court, Teague Jones, fined, 6 lb". The fine was abated however.(1) On 3 Oct. 1662 he was fined 50/ for being "overtaken with drink".(6) On 15 June 1667 Teage Jones was returned by the Selectmen of Yarmouth for not coming to meeting.(7)

On 14 Feb. 1673/4 he bought a farm at Monomoit from William Nickerson Sr. bounded on the north by the White Pond and land of John Nickerson and on the east by "the highway that leads into the Inlands". He also obtained by the same deed six acres of upland at the Oyster Pond, two acres of meadow at Oyster Pond and two more acres on the south side of the pond as well as thirty acres of meadow at Gregory's Neck on the east side of Taylor's Pond, South Chatham. On 27 Dec. 1675 he added five acres to this farm lying between the pond and the highway and bounded on the east by Edward Cottle's land in West Chatham. On 29 May 1691 He sold his farm on the west side of the Bass River to his son Jeremiah. Josiah Jones and Joseph Eldredge owned the adjoining farms.(11)

In 1675 Teague Jones Jr. and his brother Samuel were enrolled in the militia during King Philips War. The following year a rate was assessed to defray the costs of the war and Teague Jones Sr. of Yarmouth was assessed 2/4 for his share.(8)

Teague is mentioned in the inventory of James Claghorn 21 July 1683 which has the item: "what is due from Teague Jones to the estate- 1 pound".(10)

He was dead by 12 Oct. 1702 as in a deed by Michael Stewart the tract of land he purchased was bounded "by ye reputed lands of Teague Jones deceased".(12)
