John Henderson of New Portland, Maine

HENDERSON

1. JOHN

b.c. 1765

On the 10th of Sept. 1812 John Henderson of New Portland purchased from the town for back taxes ($3.17) lot No. 19 (90 acres) and ¾ of lot No. 20 (67 acres) in Range H.(1) John then mortgaged lot No. 19 to Reuben Hill of New Portland for $150.(2) He then mortgaged part of lot No. 20 to Robert Hewey of Lisbon for $400 and lot No. 19 and 50 acres of lot No. 20 for $100 on the 9th of Aug. 1816.(3) He evidently paid off this mortgage and then re-mortgaged the property to Samuel Hewey of Lisbon on the 21st of Oct. 1817 for $425 (lot No. 20) and $100 (lot No. 19). (4)

John is listed in the 1830 Census for New Portland (but not in 1810 or 1820) along with (presumably) his wife, age 50-60, a male age 20-30 (probably John Jr.), two males ages 15-20, and a male age 10-15.(5)

A John Henderson is listed in the 1800 census for Thompsonborough (Wales) with one male and female ages 16-26 and one child less than 10 years old. Further research is needed to determine if this is the same John who lived in New Portland a few years later.(6)
