Anthony and his family came to America from Southampton in the "James", landing in Boston on 3 June 1635. He lived in Newbury until 1640, then Dover, NH until 1649 before settling in Kittery.

A court record from 22 Dec. 1637 shows that he had a brother named John and another court record from 10 June 1638 shows that he was still living in Newbury.

On 22 Oct. 1640 Anthony signed the Dover Combination. His home was on Dover Neck three or four miles from Major Richard Waldron's settlement on the Cocheco River. He kept an ordinary there which was destroyed by fire:

Unto your good worp that your poore peticonr was licenced b the towne abovsd to keept an ordinary wh shd give Dyet & to sell beere & wine as was accustomed & sithence there was an order that non but one should sell wine upon which there hath beene complaint made to your worp as Mr Smyths saith & hee hath in a manner discharged your petr wch wilbe to your petr great damage haveing a wife & 3 children to maintain & not a house fitted for present to live in haveing had his house & goods lately burnt downe to the ground... Humbly beseeching yor worp to bee pleased to grant to your petr that he may sell wine & that Mr Smyth may be certified thereof hee keeping good order in his house & he shall as hee is in Duty bound pray for your worps health & happyness."

This petition does not have a date, however, Anthony petitioned in 1643 for permission to keep an ordinary and on 7 Mar. 1643/4 he was "allowed whereby to draw out his wine." In that year and 1648 he was also one of the selectmen to handle the "prudentiall affaires" of the town of Dover.

On 15 Nov. 1648 he purchased a house, field and marsh on Sturgeon Creek on the Piscataqua in what is now Eliot from John White, however, he does not seem to have moved there immediately as he served on the grand jury in Dover in 1649.

He was often a juryman, constable and selectman while in Kittery. He signed the submission to Massachusetts on 16 Nov. 1652. He received four grants of land from the town and on 15 July 1650 he bought from Joseph Austin of Piscataqua "a little Marsh soe Commanly called above Sturgeon Cricke, with a little house & upland yrunto belonging, as also one thousand five hundred foote of boards, for & in Consideration of two stears Called by ye name of draggon and Benbow, with a weeks worke of him selfe & other oxen wch is to be done at Cutchecha."

In 1656 he was fined £ 5 for mutinous courage in questioning the authority of the court at Kittery and in 1660 he was fined for entertaining Quakers and disenfranchised and subsequently moved to Portsmouth, RI.

On 12 May 1660 Anthony and Frances sold the house and land at Cold Harbour to their son James for £ 150 along with the other land in Kittery "with all & singular the houseing, barne Garden oarchards Commans profetts priviledges fences wood Tymber appurtenances & Haeredtaments belonging, or in any way apprtayning thereunto."

Anthony was received as a free inhabitant of Portsmouth, RI on 29 Sept. 1660. He was chosen constable 4 June 1666 and was a deputy to the General Court on 25 Apr. 1672. The last record we have of him is a deed to land in Portsmouth to his daughter Rebecca Sadler 9 Mar. 1680.

It is unlikely that the Anthony Emery who was a representative from Kittery 30 Mar. 1680 was this Anthony, however, he may have been the unknown second son mentioned in the other documents.

James was chosen selectman eight times and twice was the representative from Kittery to the General Court.

"The account of Elizabeth Emery, late Relict or widow and administratrix of the Estate of John Pigg decased in Dedham." On 10 June 1709 James Emery presented the division of the estate. On 10 May 1700 "James Emery of Dedham in New England, the only surviving son of Anthony Emery late of Portsmouth on Rhode Island and Providence Plantations deceased, quitclaims to his sister Rebeccas Sadler alias Eaton, lands, estate Goods and Chattels of said Anthony Emery late deceased." In a 1713 deed James describes himself as of Berwick. It appears that James after his election as a representative to the General Court, lived in Dedham and after the settlement of John Pigg's estate he moved to Berwick where he was a representative to the General Court in 1693 and 1695. He had lands grants in Kittery in 1653, 1656, 1669, and 1671 and was a selectman from Kittery in 1674, 1676, 1677, 1684, 1685, 1692, 1693, and 1695. He was also a grand juror and constable in 1670.

Supposedly when he went to Boston his carriage was a chair placed in an ox cart drawn by a yoke of steers. This arrangement was needed as there was not a carriage large or strong enough to carry him safely. He evidently was a large man weighing in over 350 lbs.

"We James Emery, Daniel Emery, Job Emery and Gilbert Warren of ye town of Kittery in ye County of York in ye Province of ye Massachusetts Bay in New England and Sylvanus Knock of ye town of Dover in ye Province of New Hampshire in ye county aforesaid" give unto Zachariah Emery, son of our brother Zachariah Emery, a tract of land which was granted by the town of Kittery to our brother Noah Emery and to our brother Zachariah Emery. From the language used in the deed it is evident that Sylvanus Knock and Gilbert Warren had the same relationship with James, Job and Daniel, ie., brothers-in-law. On 19 Feb. 1706/7 Gilbert Warren and his wife Sarah sold land in Kittery and on 28 Dec. 1738 Sarah Warren, widow of Gilbert Warren sold more land in Kittery. From the above it seems fairly sure that Sarah was a daughter of James.

Antoine was a soldier in the company of Capt. Pecaudy Antoine, Sieur de Contrecoeur in the Carignan Regiment and came to New France on "La Paix" sailing from La Rochelle on 13 May and arrived in Quebec 19 Aug. 1665 with 300 soldiers on board. After the demobilization of the troops in 1667, Antoine remained.

22 Mar. 1697: "Request of Antoine Emery to hold a meeting of relatives and friends to elect a deputy guardian and tutor for his six children and then take an inventory of his estate since he has married again with Anne Marie Favreau."

5 Apr. 1715- 24 Mar. 1716: "Request of Marie Anne Favreau, widow of Anthony Emery dit Coderre to hold a meeting of relatives and friends in order to elect a tutor for his 10 minor children with permission from the Royal prosecutor for taking into account the sale of furniture of Antoine Emery and Marie Devault held in common with Marie Anne Favreau".(1)

20 July 1730: "ORDER Gilles Hocquart, holding the office of Intendant, allowing Jean Louis Lacorne de Chapts, Chevalier de Saint Louis, Lt. of the king in Montreal, to sell the land of the heirs of Antoine Emery dit Caudere located in his lordship of La Corne to pay the rents and arrears".(2)
