Note from our president
How often have
you needed the 1890 census to find your ancestors? What do you use as an alternative? I use city
directories to find where my ancestors were living between 1880 and 1900;
however that only works if I already know where they were living at some time
during those 20 years.
Alternative
records like the Overseers of the Poor records for Lowell that we are just
finishing indexing can help fill in that gap for many people searching for
their ancestors in Lowell. We should all be very proud of what many hands can
accomplish in a short period of time. We have indexed just over 3400 records in
the past year. If you don’t know many of these records contain names of other
family members and for immigrants it notes when and where they arrived and
where they lived in between.
We have a few
more records to finish being indexed and returned, and then we will post the
full indexed list on our Website.
We will be
looking for another project like this that we can do to make a difference.

In 1700s and
1800s, towns had stick rules of inhabitancy.
To receive aid a person had to be a legal inhabitant of the town. This resulted in towns issuing various
notifications that are listed in the Town Record books or town reports. These notifications included:
Stranger notifications – Inhabitants had 20 days to report any
non-resident living with them for longer than three weeks. Bonds were required by sponsor in the
non-resident was staying longer than the three weeks.
Warning Out notifications – By warning out a non-inhabitant, towns
were protected from future liability. People
could still live in the town, but could not receive aid from it.
Cash book line items – found in Treasure’s books showed payments
to the poor for food, clothing, health care, shelter, etc. Some death records can be found in cash books.
Vendue records – Auctions were

unindexed census, try the following web site to find the correct ED.
(enumeration district). This can be a
very helpful tool for the 1930/1940 censuses.
http://www.stevemorse.org/census/index.html
They offer three utilities to compute EDs for 1940
addresses.
The first is Unified 1940 ED Finder in which you
will be able to compute the ED from the 1940 address in major cities directly.
All cities having at least 25,000 or more in 1940, and many smaller ones as
well, are on this website.
The second is a separate 1930/1940 ED Converter
utility that will allow you to convert a 1930 ED to a 1940 ED.
The third is the ED Description utility for 1940
which works best for all rural areas, and institutions, but does cover the
other EDs as well.

For a little humor this month
we’ve included the following excerpt from Dick Eastman’s online newsletter.
It is amazing how
hard great-grandmother worked at being beautiful. When Barkham Burroughs wrote
his Encyclopaedia of Astounding Facts and Useful Information in 1889,
he devoted a full chapter to the “secrets of beauty.” Here are some excerpts:
Bathe often: At least once a week, but if possible, a lady should
“take a plunge or sponge bath three times a week.”
Don’t wash your hair: Water is “injurious” to the hair. Instead,
wipe “the dust of the previous day” away on a towel. You can also brush your
hair during any long, idle breaks in the day. 30 minutes is a good
hair-brushing session.
And never, ever wash your face: Simply rub the skin with “an
ointment of glycerine” and “dry with a chamois-skin or cotton flannel.” One
“beautiful lady” is admired who had “not washed her face for three years, yet
it is always clean, rosy, sweet and kissable.”
I think I prefer spending time with one of today's ladies. You can
read more 1889 beauty "hints" at http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/140115
