Came from England quite early and removed to Middletown, Ct., after 1650. In March 1650, a committee was apointed to explore the lands of Mattabeatt, the Indian name of Middletown, and they reported that subsistence might be obtained for a colony of fifteen families, and in the course of that year settlement commenced. The principal portion of the early inhabitants came from England and Massachustts and a few from Hartford, Ct.

Came to Whately, Mass. in 1778. He bought one acre of land where H.S. Allis now lives and built a house, and later built the square house, now the parsonage, built a tnnery on Gutter brook and a shop near the house for the shoe buisness. Sold in 1825 to Stalham Allis and removed to the state of New York, where he died.

Removed to Whately, married Bartha Graves. She died and he married Hannah Crittenden. They lived a few years in Colrain and removed to Plainfield on the Hawley line, a part of the farm being in Hawley, in 1807. The children attended Hawley schools and in various ways were identified with the interests of the town.
