While I live in Canada, my mother's family is Guyanese. Like all West Indians we are of mixed heritage; however, my maternal grandparents' surnames are Portugese. I believe that many of my ancestors immigrated to Guyana from Madeira in the early 19th century. Pertinent names include the following: DeFrance and D'Arcy on my grandfather's side and Gorsira and DaSilva on my grandmother's side. How many Madeiran West Indians out there still eat garlic pork at Xmas? :)

Hi, I am looking for any and as much information as I can. I am doing a college project for my genetics class, plus I'd love to have the information for myself and to share with my family. As the Pitta Family I know that my relative Jose Amaro Pitta was born on the island Madeira. He married Maria Fernandes de Assoni who also was born on Madeira. They some how moved to Brazil then came on a ship to California. Had a son Manuel on the ship from Brazil to USA. After arriving in Claifornia they had 4 more children. 2 girls and 2 boys. Manuel is my great grandfather. As for Nunes I know I have a relative Manuel Nunes who moved from Portugal to Oahu, Hawaii in 1879. He had 2 wifes. Not sure where in Portugal he is from and really don't have a lot of information about him except that after living in Hawaii he invented the Ukelele and his son August helped him build Ukelele's. His son August was born in 1876 and died in 1938. He married Mary Gomes Romao who was born in 1870 and died March 1949. Her parents were Manuel Gomes Romao and Louise Nunes. Not sure where in Portugal they were from? Any information would be great Please Contact me. THANK YOU

My great great grandfather was Jao Evangelista De Souza who was married to one Antonia De Souza from Madeira , Portugal. They must have lived there from about 1835 until coming to St. Vincent, West Indies, some time around 1853/54. Their first child born there was named Mathilda, born 15 March 1854 & died soon after. The eldest son was named Antonio Agostimbro De Souza, born November 20th, 1856. He apparently went back to Madeira when he was 8 years old and supposedly lived there until his death. There were four other children, Augusto, Mathilda, my great grandmother, who was married to John Sardine. If anyone has a lead to a De Souza family in Madeira or who has a connection to Antonio Agostimbro De Souza, please contact me at my e-mail address. Thank You .

I am helping my mother-in-law do some research. Her great-grandmother Lauria (could be Laura) Ferreira (B.1-9-1832) went to Jacksonville, Illinois from Madeira Island when she was 13 yrs. old, in 1845. According to oral family history her and her brother Manuel Ferreira were the only ones alive, the rest of the family had been murdered. Lauria was sent to American and Manuel stayed in Madeira. Laura received a letter from Manuel in 1861 from Port of Spain Trinidad. We do not know who Lauria married but she had a daugher named Marsha Hilt, she married A.H. Smith (Buda). They had two daughters Blanche Ilene (married a Sieh) and Bernice Lillian (married a Tompkins). Bernice had two daughters Lois (died Aug 1995) and Peggy. Blanche had a daughter named Katey Burton and there is also the name Tracey Burton, we do not know if she was Blanche's daughter or grand- daughter. Any information especially if anyone knows what happened to Manuel would be greatly appreciated. From what we know most of Lauria's family has passed away.

Sometime in the years after 1832 , three young brothers were stowed away on an onion boat by their family to escape the Spain /Portuguese conscription of the young men into the military , The farm was left in the care of the remaining family , and no contact was made since . My father , Manoel John Rodrigues was born in 1897 in Betterverwagtin, British Guiana ,either the county of Berbice or Mahaica/ Mahaicony County . Mother,s family Carvalho , i am not sure of their birth place .Only that mother,s father owned a bakery in British Guiana , grandmother and he had 5 children , 4 girls and a son .

i heard as i was growing up, that my Madeiran ancestors ,Rodrigues were farmers , that they owned a piece of farmland, at the time of the Portuguese/ Spanish war of the Diaspora-.Year? I do not recall.Three brothers of the ancestors were stowed away on an onion boat , as the Portuguese Government was taking the youth for the military .My own father was not born in Madeira , but in Beterverwagtin, British Guiana ,in the year 1897. I do not know if it was my father's father ,or his father's father who were the three brothers that escaped Madeira. The year ? I do not know. There was a small Sephardic Jewish community in Essequibo, British Guiana , where evidently they lived before moving to Beterverwagtin. If all three brothers remained in British Guiana , or two may have tried Ellis Island ,N.Y. Just a guess . Cargo boats , carrying passengers,in those years unloaded in Holland , or Liverpool, England .I know of a Rodrigues , whose family escaped the Dutch holocaust of 1939-45 , and came to America. That is what i had heard of my father's ancestors. My father , when his mother died , at a young age , his father remarried ,a Rosa , and there were two more children born .My father , at the age of thirteen was called to support the two younger children , because his father died . Sounds a bit complicated ? But i believe that i do have that right . My fathe was a very well known merchant M.J.Rodrigues. My mother was a Carvalho, whose father was a Carvalho.

My Madeiran descendant is Antonia Fernandes (b.1801). He came to America from Trinidad I "believe" via the Brig Standard on June 24,1853. Traveling with him sons: John(20y), my g-g-grandfather Joseph (18y)and 2 daughters: Maria (15y) and Frances (13y). In a biographical exerpt from the "Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Sangamon County" (1912), about my g-g-grandfather, Joseph Fernandes, it stated that "He was born in the Island of Madeira, in August 1832, being the son of Antonia and Frances Fernandes. The father (Antonio) was a gardener and came to America with a family consisting of THREE sons and THREE daughters and his wife. I don't know who the other son and daughter were. His son, Joseph married Lucy "D'Aquin" (best I can decipher of spelling on the marriage license)in Sangamon County, IL in November 1859. I cannot find any family related to Lucia immigrating to Illinois or how she got to America. She appears to have also later "Americanized" her name to "Kean". Joseph and Lucy had six children: Lucy K.(my g-grandmother), Margarida (nicknamed "Dudy"), Maria Louise, Guilhermina, Joseph and Minnie.

My great-great-grandmother, Emilia or Amelia DeSilva, according to family tradition, was born in Maderia. The 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 Censuses all state she was born in New York, but 1870 indicates her parents were both foreign born, and 1880 states her parents were born in Spain. Details various family members have recalled seem to match with Joseph (Joao Jose in the 1800 Census???) DeSilva, who was kidnapped from Maderia on an English sailing ship and settled in Schoharie County, New York. So far I can't find the connection between this family and Amelia, but do know she was born about 1817, and that she married John Beer, a plasterer from England, about 1838 - the couple lived in New York City.

My great grandfather (Agostinho Angelo De Nobrega) had two brothers that we know of, and one sister. It is also noted that there could have been more brothers and sisters. Some say there was but at this time we don't have proof. Agostinho had a brother Frank and another brother whom we think was named Carlos De Nobrega. Agostinho A De Nobrega married Anna Maria Walsh in 1885. They had fiev children that we are aware of. Victoria, Guilhermina, Christina and Clement. There was another but he died as a young lad. Anna Maria Walsh's father was the chief dispensor of the gen. hospital. Agostinho was an accountant as far as we know. A remarkable note is that each member of this family had the middle initial of (A.) Agostinho's is supposed to be from Madeira, but we have no proof or any date that he, his brothers and sister moved from Maderia to British Guiana. Clement moved to New York and had three children. Just recently we did find new family but not enough info has been kept. I continue my search and wish all of you happy hunting. Father, Manuel Martins Luis, arrived in N.Y. when he was 17 years old, approx. 1920. He was born in San Antonio,Funchal, Madeira. Lived and worked in Fall River, Mass. as a weaver, sample maker. Later moved to Pawtucket, R.I., married Maria Texeira Nobrega. Dad started and sold many businesses, ie. dairy, pharmacy, and finally a commercial laundry with his wife, Maria, Narragansett Park Laundry in Pawtucket, R.I.. Manuel and Maria had one child, Daniel, born march 7, 1938. Maria passed away 2 1/2 years after the birth of daniel with Meningitis. Maria was born in Fall River, Mass. Her parents are John Ferreira Nobrega and Conceicao Texeira. They were born in Madeira. John and Conceicao moved to Pawtucket, built a home and remained there for the rest of their lives. They're address was 16 Kenmore St, Pawtucket, R.I.. They had 8 children, Joseph, Anibel, Maria, Manuel, Abel, John, Alice, and Americo. The children still living are Alice, Anibel, and Joseph who lives in Canada. My grandfather John Ferreira Nobrega also had two brothers who emigrated to the U.S. and one moved to California. I believe he lived in San Antonio, California. As told to me by my grandmother, Conciecao. John had always planned and saved to go to California to visit his brother, but family needs seemed to always get in the way of his plans, and there to went the saved trip money. John also had a second brother who lived in Pawtucket. His name was Gonsalves Nobrega. My grandfather came over by himself intending to save some money and return to Madeira, and start a new business after his grocery store burned down, but he became lonesome while he was in the U.S., and asked Conceicao to come to be with him as he worked to save the money to start over. Conceicao who had 3 babies at the time got on a boat and came to be with John. She had to sell her gold cross to get money to purchase extra milk for the babies. My grandmother told me that the trip was so strenuous that when she arrived in Boston, "a young woman had left Madeira and an old woman arrived in the U.S.". Of course, John and Conceicao never returned to Madeira.

I heard that my father's maternal grandparents were married in Funchel,Madeira in the 1800's. I also heard that my great grandfather John T (Theopolis?) Martin Alves had lived in or had some connection with St. Kitts. I don't know my portugues G-Grandmother's first name and I'm not sure if John T Matin Alves was Portugese..I heard someone say he may have had German blood. My G-Grandfather settled in Sandy Parish,Bermuda and his first born..Maria..was my grandmother. I heard my g-grandfather was a prosperous merchant and a zelous Prostestant..acting like a self ordained preacher. My father never spoke of his past and I'm just hoping some one out there may help with bits of the puzzle of my ancestory. My grandmother eloped with a British Navy seaman and was disowned by her father who always wanted his daughter to be a missionary. My grandmother and her British seaman husband immigrated to the US and was eventually deserted by her husband during the Depression. My grandmother had US citizenship because of being born during a trip to Fall River,Mass. in the 1890's.

This is an update to what I posted a day or two ago. My G-Grandfather's name was John T. Martin Alves and he immigrated to Bermuda from St. Kitts, and earlier from Funchal,Maderia in the latter 1980's. He married a woman of German ancestery. They had two daughter, Maria and Clarisse,Maria being my grandmother and my fathers's mother. My grandfathers's ancestors came from Maderia and I was told( but not certain )by my aging father, that G- Grandfather John T. Martin Alves married my German grandmother in Funchal,Maderia. My father (age 82) told me today that he thinks we were related to the De Frietas family..possibly some settling in Long Island,NYC,US ,when..I'm not sure.My father also mentioned we may have relatives living in Barbados. My G-Grandfather John Martin Alves, after having established permenant residency in Bermuda, had made various trips to a Protestant teaching seminary located in Fall River,Ma.US, because he wanted to be a preacher. It was during one of those trips when my grandmother,Maria was born. My G-grandfather John T. Martin Alves, became a very well off prosperous merchant at Sandy's Point,Bermuda. When he died he donated land to the church of England)High Anglican?)

Some of my earlier info posted may be not all accurate :( My father barely remembers bits and peices. I am now believing my G-Grandfather John T. Martin Alves had left Funchal,Maderia during the Protesant persecutions ., I think that he may have been influenced by the "Apostle of Maderia" a missionary, Protestant, Scottish doctor by the name of Dr. Robert Reid Kalley. I suspect he may have spent some time at St. Kitts unlike many Protestant exiles who went from Trindad to Springfield,Ill.USA. I heard he was a surveyor..sometimes working in South America..doing some work for the British and was given some land in Bermuda in Sandy Parish. I am NOT sure all this was true..my father changed his stories alot throughout the years. My G-Grandfather's name may have been John T. With limited information about my father, his name is Joaquim Faria? was born in Portugal roughly 1954, came to Australia in the 1970's and began a relationship with my mother Katea VEA, roughly in 1976 and I was born in September 1977. My father was then deported back to Portugal in roughly 1979, when I was 2 years old. He had a brother by the name of Tony. Whether that is short for Antonio? He apparently stayed in Australia and would now be in his 50's. My father would be 50 years old this year and could possibly be in Portugal still, after his deportation. Apparently, apart from his brother, he also had 2 sisters - unsure of their names.

My G Grandfather was Portuguese, but I don`t know where he came from for sure. I was told he came from Santa Maria Azores,he also may have come from Madeira. His name was Francis Antonio DaSilva when he married Alice Dianna Minors in Bermuda in 1865,and this is fact. But when they had children the surname changed to DeSilva. The first son John Henry DeSilva was born in 1866, no more info on him, the next child was a girl-Mary Elizabeth DeSilva born 1869, and died 1870 at 11 months of age. The third child a son name -Hilton Adolphus J. DeSilva was born 1871 ( my Grand-father) and died 1957. The fourth child a daughter name Flora Belle Esther born 1874 and died 1883 age 9 years. I am seeking info on my G Grandfather about his arrival 1n Bermuda. sometime between 1840-1864. Thank You

I have been able to go back as far as my Great-Great-Grandfather, John Fernandes (b. 1848) and his wife Maria Correia (b. 1852). They had 6 children.: John, George, Victor, Marie, Angela and Isabella. John's (b. 1848) parents immigrated to Guyana from Madeira but I don't have any specific information about them. He had a sister, Mary, who married Manoel D'Abreu and had 10 children. John's (b. 1848) son, John (b. 1878) married Deolinda Maria Franco (Grannie D.M. Fernandes) (b. 1882) and they had 12 children: John (Honest John), Stella, Joseph, Stanislaus, Gabriel, Geraldo, Aloysius, Carlos, Frederick, Rita and Carmen. Joseph was my grandfather and married Estella Celestina Jasmins. Deolinda Maria Franco's parents were (John?) Manuel Franco and Matilda Mendonca. They had 6 children and most of them were educated in Madeira. Deolinda's brother, Antonio, lived in the USA at one time, was an accountant and died in Brasil. Another brother, Manuel, was a doctor in Lisbon. Please feel free to contact me if any of these names are familiar or a part of your own Family Tree.

I do know alot and continuing to learn more. My family is shall we say " the lost ones" as we cound not talk apart our heritage until it was safe too! I always had questions that could not be answered so I decided (4 years ago) to go to Maderia. My uncle in England told me he met one of our cousins in Maderia when he was there for his honey moon. It so happened to be Daniela Baptista Ferriera. When I got there they showed me alot of history that that I wasn't sure if it was a myth or truth. They showed me where we farmed our land How we are related to CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS and how our great great grandfather saved him from death. I know what you are reading is really hard to believe but it is true. If any of you are from the "mega baptista family" and would like to correspond email me.there is much more but that would be alot to type. --------------------------------------------------

His name, Gabriel DeSousa Cabral met my mother in Colombia, then moved to Panama where they were married and had two children- my brother and I. My father spoke very little about his family, but he did say he had brothers and sisters(unknow names). He left Madeira about the age of 15 and was a fisherman by trade. Like I said very little info! When I was growing up my grandmother, who was married to Arthur Abner Mendonsa, told me that his family had left the Madeira islands, because of religious persecution and had settled in Jacksonville, Illinois when a large group of Portugese came over from there in the 1850's. My great grandfather was Emanuel L. Mendonsa and my great grandmother was Julia V. Correa. Her father was Joseph P. Correa (my great great grandfather). I believe that Emanuel L. Mendonsa came over as a child with both his parents and his father's name was also Emanuel (I think). I have the marriage certificate for Emanuel and Julia. They were married on June 12,1884 in Jacksonville, Ill. and Emanuel K. Pires, Pastor of Central Portugese Presbyterian Church married them. any information you can help me out with would be appreciated. By the way sometimes mendonsa was misspelled with a z (mendonza). I noticed this in the anniversary information of the portugese presbyterian churches on the madeira exiles page. I believe the Manuel Mendonza mentioned on that page was either my great grandfather or great great grandfather, but has been mispelled. It was originally spelled mendonca, with an accent mark over the c. after they came to the states it was changed to an S. Even today our name is often mispelled with a Z or mispronounced as Mendoza. Please contact me if you have any blanks you can help to fill in. thanks, andy mendonsa

I am not sure if my great grandmother came for Madeira or from Azores. My father used to say that she was an "ilhoa" (somebody who was born in one of the portuguese Islands). Her name was Guilhermina Durão, a very strong personality who was able to raise alone her children in Rio de Janeiro of the times of monarchy and slavery. Not only to raise her children, but to raise the socioeconomical anda cultural status of the family to a very significant level. She was born in 1831, I know because of the burial documents that dont mention birth and naturality. Her husband died when my grandfather was 28 months of age, so he had no importance in his education. From this greatgrandfather, I know everything to the begining of the XVII century, but what I would really like to know is the history of the heroine of the family, his wife Guilhermina Durão, an "ilhoa". --------------------------------------------------

My great grand father Anselmo Pestana was born in El Funchal, Madeira Island, and went to Venezuela at the end of the 1800's with his wife Paula Lopez Brau and his two brothers (I do not have their names). My great granfather and his wife stayed in Venezuela where my grandfather was born: Francisco Pestana Lopez, he had one sister: Isabel. My great grandfather's brothers one went to the USA and the other went back to the Canary Islands, but we do not know what happened to either of them. We are of Sephardic Jewish ascendance (conversos, Beni Anusim). You can find the Pestana surname in the Dictionary of Sephardic Surnames (published in Brasil). I am attempting to contact Pestanas from El Funchal Madeira, I hope someone will write to me. Thank you!

I believe my ggggrandfather was Thomas Lewis living in Floyd Kentucky in 1860, according to the census he was born on St Michaels island. He is 86 years old according to the census. In an earlier census his wife states she is a "midwife". Her name is Delilah Lewis, age 50? Also I am trying to connect the link of my gggreat grandfather James Tomlin who married his daughter M Jane. Which in this same census Delilah Lewis 1870, claims she is a "midwife", who claims her father was born in "Portugal".Could she actually be the mother of M jane? Also is this Delilah Lewis the same person? If this sounds confusing, I do apologize. Please email me at [email protected] I do have more information to share if someone has a connection. Thank you Marianne

This is really all I know "for sure" (unless my Dad was mistaken...) From a letter from my (now Deceased) Father Kenneth Woodrow Anthony Pereira: (note: *** denote my comments) "– Maria was a TISHEIRA from Maderria [**MADEIRA??]. They came to Antigua some where about 1850… Grand-Dad was of course “PEREIRA”. The Family of Pereiras we [**He never said who “we” was] traced back to 1350 in Portugal. You will be ‘HORROWFIED’ to know that one of your (our) ancestors (Jose Pereira Leira de Oliveira) was hanged in Liverpool, England for Piracy around the turn of the 17th century; about, if I remember correctly 1635 or 1645". Farther down: "My Mother’s side, the Philpots and Richards were brought to “Old Road”, Antigua from the Continental US as Servants to planters in 1800. The Planters’ names were, as I said, Philpot and the other Richards. The Richards and Philpots were English." He concludes: "My Father Emanuel Antonio Pereira and Mother Estella Wilhelmina Philpot." Our family SEEMS to be connected to many of Portuguese descent in Antigua:

What I know is as follows: My Paternal grandmother's father Manuel F. DaSilva was from Madeira, where I don't know. The story goes that he had an abusive stepfather and one night he got tired of the beating that he and his mother received he fought back and either killed his stepfather or almost (not sure which it was) anyways he ran away from home he was about 13-16 not sure. There is some history missing as to how he got to British Guiana, anyhow he ended up in Guyana in a small vilage name Bartica he died around the 1940's or 1950's not sure (he was about 91 when he died). He had three daughters Anges from a first marriage (he married her mother on her death bed), Rita and my grandmother Amelia Rosa from a commonlaw relationship he never married their mother. Not sure if he was an only child, but if this seems familiar to anyone and they have any information that'll be great. My Paternatal grandfather was also from Madeira Jose Mendes, (not sure where in Madeira). Again there is much information missing and I've been trying to track so down but with little or no luck. I believe that he was either 1 of 5 children and the only boy he had 4 sisters. One of his sisters apparently died when she was very young. My aunt met one sister Maria (don't know her married name but her husband's name was Frank) about 15 years or so ago in the US she later died (so dead end again). I do know that she had a son not sure what his name is but I heard he was living somewhere in Indonesia or Guam. Don't know any other information about the other siblings. Anyhow the story goes that my grandmother's father when to Madeira to find a husband for her sister Rita cause she was wild and all. Anyhow Rita didn't want Jose Mendes, my grandmother who was raised in a convent was very loyal to her father and Jose fell in love with her and married her instead. They had 5 children but he died when my dad was just 18 month and my grandmother was pregnant with her last child. So any help as to where or if any family remains would be great. Rodrigues was Amelia Rosa mother there is zero information on her whether she was born in Guyana or Portugal I don't know. She hated my great- grandfather. So any information at all for this part of the family would be great. I believe she might be related to Farinhas (not sure if it spelt right)

My cousin sent me the following newspaper article, apparently from a Springfield, IL newspaper - I can probably get more details about the exact date of the article. I would like more information about Addie (Adelaide)Garden's brothers and sisters and ancestors. I think she may be descended from the Gardens of Aberdeen, Scotland, possibly, Robert Davidson Garden. My great grandmother was Frances (Fannie) Blossom DeFrates Porter, who grew up in Springfield, IL. She and my great grandfather, George Martin Porter lived in Homer, IL "DEFRATES, MANUEL - Portugal has given Sangamon County a number of residents, and they are numbered among its most respected and useful people. Some of them have become specialists along certain lines, and the work they produce is second to none in the country. One of the best representatives of this far-away country in Sangamon County is Manuel DeFrates, residing at No. 1102 East Miller Street, Springfield. He was born on the Island of Madeira, Portugal, September 25, 1848, being a son of Anton and Josephine (Greray) DeFrates, both of Portugal. The parents came to Springfield in 1852, where the father became a peddler, thus continuing until his demise in 1905. Manuel DeFrates was brought up in Springfield, receiving an education in the public schools there. His favorite pastime during boyhood was playing ball. Later he became interested in horses and for fifteen years was engaged in the race horse business. In 1880, however, he began learning the painting and graining business, eventually embarking in this line of work. He has become so proficient along this line that he now specializes on high-class work only. A true artist, eh takes pride in his finished work and his services are in great demand all over the county. The marriage of Mr. DeFrates occurred in Springfield, in June, 1867, when he was united with Addie Garden, also a native of Portugal, a daughter of Joseph and Frances Garden, natives of the same land. Joseph Garden was a sea captain, who amassed considerable property in New York City, but did not live long to enjoy it, being drowned in the gulf of Mexico, while on one of his voyages. His widow survived him, living until about six years ago, when she too passed away in Springfield. The following children were born to Mr. and Mrs. DeFrates: Ervie, Henry, Bonnie, Lulu, George, Fannie and Myrkle. Mr. DeFrates' religious connections are with the First Portugal Presbyterian Church of Springfield, of which he is a member. In politics he is a Democrat, while fraternally he is a Modern Woodman, having joined in 1900. Quiet in manner, devoted to his work, conscientious in carrying out contracts, Mr. DeFrates has firmly established himself in the confidence of the business public."

My grand-father [his son] was Manuel Faria and I don't know how many other children my g-grandfather had but my GRAND-father married a French Candian woman and together they had Aunt Amelia Farias [Machado]- they divorced and he married Angela Moniz [Farias], which is what is on my father's military info and certificate but I remember my father telling me her name was Ventura....I'm not sure if that was a married name AFTER my grand-father died or what. But now I am looking at Moniz as a name. They are all deceased and i live so far away from many of my cousins that I'm not sure I will every find the information I seek. It is a little dis-heartening. I was told though that Faria is a Sephardic name. Whether or not we are sephardic remains to be seen. The Jews are such intelligent people and so resourceful, I'm sure we are not. However, I am married to a Jewish man and admire and love the Jewish people. I have found out recenlty that my great-grandfather came from Madeira. I don't know my great-grandmother or what her maiden name was....just the men in our family...we always lived far from them as my dad was in the military and my grand-father died when I was a child.

I'm looking for my father who was born somewhere in Portugal then came to Australia in the 1970's. He met my mother around 1976, and I was the result of their relationship. My father was then deported back to Portugal when I was 2 years old in 1979. We have never heard from him since. My mother tells me that he was known as "Jack" so I'm tipping his Portuguese name would be Joaquim and his surname is Faria. I'm getting married this year and would really love to meet my father. All I know is that he came to Australia and lived in Surry Hills in Sydney. I was born in September 1977 and he would have been deported in in 1979. He would have only been in his 20's at the time. As far as I've been told our family was sent in exile right after WWI because they were on the wrong side (German). But we supposedly go back to the 1400's when F. Gomes started his African trade. After opening up Africa (under the crown), the family moved from Lisboa to Madeira. The Elmina was added to the name after our ancestor found mines in Ghana. I don't know how much of this is true. Supposedly the family kept on as marine merchants until slavery was abolished in England. And, the family crest had two negro heads with gold rings in their noses.

My GG Grandparents left Sao Jorge, Madeira for the US (I believe Hawaii). My G grandfather who was a baby was kidnapped off the boat by his nanny. The GG grandparents only realised this once the ship had left port. Once they reached their final destination they sent money to the nanny so that she would look after the child and bring him up. He married (don't know who) but they had my grandfather Joao Paulo da Silva who married Conceicao and had Emiliano Paulo da Silva and Joao Alberto da Silva. Both my grandparents died in late 1980s/early 1990s in Sao Jorge. My father emigrated to South Africa in the early 1960s and married my mother, Maria Vera Caetano also from Sitio do Jogo da Bola, Sao Jorge and had me and my brother, Samuel Paulo da Silva. My uncle, Joao Alberto married Rita and had 3 daughters, Tania, Patricia and Raquel. They all emigrated to South Africa in the 1980s where my uncle died in a car accident. Rita and the girls moved back to Funchal, Madeira. I believe that that the girls are either studying or living in the UK. Have lost touch with them. Would love to hear from them and from any relations from Hawaii who I believe were in Madeira at the time of my grandparents' funerals.

Correia Henriques was the first count of Seisal. The question is, is Seisal equal to the village of Seixal on Madeira? If anyone has information on this topic I should be very interested to hear it.

Presently, the farthest back our link goes is with Antonio Joaquina do Rego of Canico, who married Maria J. de Jesus, they had a son Leandro Antonio do Rego, who became a squire of Canico, and went on to marry Maria Clara Bettencourt of Santa Cruz in 1806. Her father Agostinho Antonio Bettencourt was a Lieutenant in the Militia. A witness to Leandro’s wedding, was Francisco Jose do Rego, an Army Captain. From this marriage, are recorded 8 children, namely; Agostinho Albino b.1807, Jose b.1808, Fortunata b.1811, Antonio b.1812, Abilio b.1816, Silvino b.1819, Maria (1) b.1822-22 who died an infant, Maria (2) b.1824. The eldest son Agostinho Albino, became a landowner, and in 1842 he married Leocadia A. de Gouveia from Sao Pedro, a district of Funchal. They produced 11 children over a period of twenty-five years, from Virginia b.1843 to Eulalia b.1868, and it is among these children that half of our REGO family commenced emigration to Demerara. ------------------------------------------ During the 1830s and 1840s there was much famine in Madeira, and many people adults and children alike, commenced a new life emigrating to Brazil, Demerara, Trinidad, England, Hawaii, America and elsewhere. The failings in the vineyards due to a fungus disease, caused many families to suffer hardship, as over half the population was involved with wine making, and eventually these families looked elsewhere for a brighter future. The first official emigration from Madeira to Demerara commenced in 1835, ceasing between 1842-46, then re-established with a vengeance in the 1850s due to the bulk of the population on the brink of starvation for the grape harvest which had totally failed yet again. Emigration continued in large numbers, until the early 1870s, whereby the numbers slowed down. Between 1872 to 1900 a total of 17,200 people are recorded leaving the island of Madeira, however not all were emigrating, some, mainly English and other Europeans were returning home with their families, who had been involved in the Madeira wine trade. British Guiana (BG); the first Portuguese immigrants to arrive in 1835 were indentured labourers employed and tied to a sugar estates, replacing the slaves who had been granted freedom by the British in 1834 and did not want to be associated with plantation life. The first batch of indentured labourers were allocated to a plantation, and employed in various duties with a monthly wage, weekly rations, clothing if needed, and a contact for 5 years, after which a parcel of land was granted, or free return passage home. The field labourers coming into British Guiana during the 1830s-1860s, were not only Portuguese, but British, European, African, West Indian, Bahamas, Chinese, and for the greater part East Indian, they arrived in their 1000s each year up until 1917. In May 1857 the BG government voted funds to introduce more Portuguese immigrants, this time non-indentured and free to choose their own employment. Therefore from this date, besides labourers coming into Demerara, others brought their families and their servants adding to the rank of business people, as shopkeepers and clerks and landowners. By 1860 the majority of the Portuguese in Demerara were in shopkeeping, business, owners of property, however they had little involvement in politics, there interest lay in commerce. ------------------------------------------ The first recorded emigration in the family tree, was Leandro Augusto do Rego, who accompanied Antonio Coelho in 1872 for Demerara. Leandro returned to Madeira two years later, and in 1874 set sail for Demerara taking in his care, two of his sisters, Carlota b.1853 and Maria Magdalena b.1858 for the residence of Manoel da Silva. All three departed in an British vessel “E. W. Cohoon” in September, and arrived and settled in Demerara. Carlota then c.1875 married Manoel de Silva, but he shortly died, and on 3 March 1881, aged 27, she re-married to Joseph d’Abreu at St.Peter’s RC church. However with 3 children, her second husband died, and again she re-married on 30 October 1892 to Bernard Sina Gomes at St.John the Baptist RC church, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara. The next to depart for Demerara in 1879, was Alfredo Luis do Rego (born 1866), aged 13, he was accompanied by Manoel da Silva, (his brother-in- law), who had married his elder sister, Carlota Rego. Alfredo sailed aboard the British vessel “Shannon” obtaining a receipt for Reis 20,000 the equivalent of £4 3s 4d for his passage. Upon his arrival he stayed with his sister, Carlota. He was not long in Demerara when he got married there in 1886, Aged 19, to Adelaide Ferrerira, Aged 17, having an occupation of Storekeeper. Alfredo & Adelaide, are recorded as having 10 children, although this number may be incomplete, due to the difficulty in proving and obtaining birth, marriage, death copy certificates in Guyana. The first child was Alfred b.1887, followed by, Peter about b.1890, Alexandra b.1892, Christana b.1894, John b.1896, Elviera b.1899, Ermelinda b.1902, Herman b.1905, Cecil about b.1908, Beatrice b.1912. Of the above, only Alfred and Peter are recorded as having married. Alfred b.1887, married about 1919 to Philomena Rodrigues and they produced two children, Noel b.1919, Eric b.1921. Unfortunately, Philomena (Phyllis) died shortly after her second birth, and Alfred later remarried several years later in 1926, to Olive Dos Santos, whereby 2 more children were born, Dione Maria b.1942, Mervin b.1943. Another departure from Madeira to Demerara, was Alexandre b.1855, he emigrated (date to be confirmed c1870), to the village of Plaisance, East Coast Demerara. He had two partners and 3 children prior to his marriage to Wilhermina Vincente, from which they successfully produced 10 children, namely; Palmira b.1899, Stephen b.1900, Maria b.1902, Alexander b.1903, Eleanora b.1904, Rosa Maria b.1906, Maria Philomena b.1907, Winston b.1911, Francis b.1913, Thelma b.1915. The final and sixth family member to depart from Madeira to Demerara, was Cristiano b.1862, he emigrated in September 1884, Age 21, settling in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara. He married about 1890 having 2 girls, Eulalie b.1891, Adelaide b.1893. ------------------------------------------ The Rego’s who emigrated to Demerara between 1872-1884, generally lived there for one or two generations, but did not settle. From the outbreak of world-war two, several joined the allied forces, and did not return to British Guiana, others started to emigrate from BG as the troubles commenced in the mid 1950s, these internal disputes and fighting continued in British Guiana right up to its Independence in May 1966, resulting in Guyana becoming a Republic in 1970. The internal conflict continued, basically between the African and East Indian peoples, which precipitated a mass exodus from Guyana, of the former Europeans, to countries such as USA, Canada, and the UK. Alexandre Rego b.1855, who emigrated from Madeira to Demerara about 1870, had; son, Stephen b.1900, emigrated with his wife Laura and family to USA. son, Winston b.1911 moved to Aruba. daughter, Thelma b.1915 moved with husband Francis Blanchard and family to UK. granddaughter, Mary b.1919 moved to USA. grandson, Ramon b.1934 moved with his wife Barbara to Canada. granddaughter, Camile b.1935 moved with husband Paul Isaacs and family to The Bahamas granddaughter, Esme b.1937 moved with husband and children to Venezuela. granddaughter, Audrey b.1940 moved with husband David Statham to Canada. granddaughter, Pauline b.1944 moved with family and husband William Bryant to Canada. grandson, G. Alexander b.1949 moved to Canada. grandson, Patrick b.1951 moved to Canada. Cristiano Rego b.1862, who emigrated from Madeira to Demerara in 1884, had; daughter, Adelaide b.1893 moved to Canada. Alfredo Rego b.1866, who emigrated from Madeira to Demerara in 1879, had; son, Alfred b.1887, moved with wife Olive and family to USA. grandson, Noel b.1919 moved to UK. grandson, Eric b.1921 moved with wife Sheila and family to USA. granddaughter, Dione b.1942 moved to USA. grandson, Mervin b.1943 moved to USA. The only REGO’s still living in Demerara are Paul b.1964 and Damian b.1967, both sons of Romeo b.1932 who died in 1968, leaving his widow Evelyn (nee Gomes) to look after their two children. My name is Michael Rego, I reside in Yorkshire, UK, with my family and parents.

Grandfather's name Charles Rodrigues lived in British Guiana. His daughter with Marie Neusom (or Newsom not sure) is May Celestine Rodrigues. He legally recognized his daughter although he was not married to her mother, and had other children with the woman he was married to. My mother, May Celestine Rodrigues tells stories of how her father's aunts who were from Madeira would speak Portoguese while babysitting her.

From 1834 to 1841, over 30,000 people immigrated to Guyana from the Island of Medeira for better opportunities. Both my mother & father immigrated to Canada, Montreal in 1961. We are the 1st generation in Canada. Estimating 4 to 5 generations have past in Guyana since the Medeiran Migration to Guyana. I assume my ancestors became labourors working in plantation fields. I also know that Portuguese Surnames that begin with Da, Dos, Di and De, where given to children who became orphaned. Guyana history documents a high mortality rate of that time. I assume somewhere, probably 1st or 2nd generation, someone suffered this tragedy of orphaned status on my mother's side. Mother originated from Pameroon, and lived by the river there, and father lived somewhere outside Georgetown, more closely to Berbice. Mother was born in 1941. Name is Evelyn Monica,(or Monica, Evelyn), and father was born 1937, his name is Joseph Richard. I honestly can not imagine anyone knowing any information on the lives of my parents ancestry, unless dates of births were documented on their previous generations, but perhaps some information noted here may help someone.
