ALBERT LIVERMORE, who since 1884 has been pastor of the Presbyterian church at Spencer, was born in Spencer, Mass., September 3, 1843, and was the second of three children in the family of Lorenzo O. and Chloe D (Bemis) Livermore. Albert was educated at Wesleyan academy . at Wilberham, and was graduated at Amherst in 1868. Both before and after graduation Mr. Livermore taught school, and in the capacity of teacher was connected with some nota.ble institutions. He studied theology at Bangor, Me., and also at Andover Theological seminary, and was graduated at the latter in 1873. Previous, however, to entering the ministry Mr. Livermore had an army experience, having enlisted July 16, 1864, as private in Co. F, 60th Mass. regiment of 100 day volunteers. He was discharged November 30, 1864. His first pastorate was 'at Miller's Falls, Mass., after which 'he went west and served in the same capacity in New Richmond, Wis., four years; at St. Ignace, Mich., and also at Nashville and Wffliamston in that state until 1885 when he returned east and was called to the pastorate of the church at Spencer. On August 9th, 1884, Mr. Livermore was married with Mrs. Mary E. Austin Bell, widow of Robert Bell and daughter of Alvah Austin, an old resident of Spencer.



Easley


Jane Torrey Thurlow, 80, of Laurel Hill Nursing Center in Pickens, previously a resident of Magnolia's of Easley, and formerly of Sebring, Fla., died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at Cannon Memorial Hospital. 

Born in Spencer, Mass., Mrs. Thurlow was a daughter of the late William Henshaw and Philomena Stevens Torrey. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald Emory Thurlow, who died in July 1989, and was also predeceased by a sister, Anne Torrey Quinn, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 

Mrs. Thurlow graduated from David Prouty High in Spencer, Mass. She was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith. 

Surviving are a sister, Mary Ruth Torrey, of N. Attleboro, Mass.; two sons, Donald Emory Jr. and his wife Ruth, of Easley, and Steven Torrey Thurlow and his girlfriend Jean Ihnat, of N. Fort Meyers, Fla.; two grandchildren, Robert Edward Thurlow and his wife Penny, of Ponca City, Okla., and Sandra Janette Thurlow of Easley; and a great-grandson, Trey Nolen Thurlow, of Ponca City, Okla. 

Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Robinson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Francis Travis officiating. 

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. 

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be made to American Lung Association, 84 Villa Road, Greenville, SC 29615. 

The family is at the home of Don and Ruth Thurlow, 117 Wellington Road, Easley.

Hurley

Howard E. Hurley Jr. ’71, 58, of Falls Church, Va., formerly of Spencer, MA, died Wednesday, May 10, 2000, at his home following a battle with cancer. Mr. Hurley was born in Worcester, Ma., son of the late Howard E Hurley Sr. and Helen (Beauchamp) Hurley and Lived in Spencer before moving to Virginia in 1973. He was the husband of Marina G. (Iser) Hurley, to whom he was married for 32 years. Mr. Hurley worked as a consultant at SEMCOR, in Arlington, Va., for the past two years. He previously was a comptroller for the US Defense Department NAV-Air UAV division for 29 years. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Hurley graduated from David Prouty High School in Spencer in 1959, attended Holy Cross College in Worcester and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He graduated from Catholic University School of Law. Besides his wife, survivors include a son, Christopher D. Hurley of Cary, NC; a brother, John M. Hurley of Hudson; a granddaughter; and nieces and nephews. . .

McCarthy 

Barbara (Bemis) McCarthy '43, 77, of Holden, MA, died Monday, April 24, in UMass Memorial Medical Center- Memorial Campus, Worcester, after an illness. She leaves her husband of 54 years, James L. McCarthy; six sons, James D. of Dallas, Thomas R. of Pacific Palisades, CA, David R. of Cape Neddick, Maine, Michael J. of Pittsfield, Patrick G. of Chesapeake, VA, and Steven P. of West Boylston; four daughters, Jean Ewell of St. Louis, Margaret Herzig of Lexington, Janice E. Maki of Woodbury, CT, and Theresa B. McCarthy of Austin, TX; two brothers, Warren and Richard Bemis, both of Spencer; a sister, Dorothy Bemis of Spencer; 20 grandchildren; nephews and nieces. She was born in Spencer, daughter of Roger E. and Helen (Hobbs) Bemis. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1944, where she was president of Pi Beta Phi. She lived in Elmira, NY, for 13 years, and moved to Holden 31 years ago. Mrs. McCarthy was active in 4-H and worked for its extension service in Worcester and Hamden counties. During World War II, she was a cover girl for several publications encouraging agricultural production. She taught home economics at Rutland's Naquag Junior High, and later worked at the Holden Big Y as a food demonstrator. She was an advocate for senior citizens. She was a member of the Holden Council on Aging and the Holden Bandstand Committee. In Á996 she received the Silver Dove Award from Governor William Weld, as well as citations from the state Senate and House of Representatives, for her volunteer work. In 1997, she received the Good Neighbor Award from the Holden Democratic Committee. . .
