Carberry, Manitoba, Canada

Carberry, Manitoba, population 1500, is a town in the south western part of the province. It was settled primarily by people of British origin who had relocated from Ontario. The city, which developed near the site of a Canadian Pacific Railway station, was incorporated in 1882, and named for the Carberry tower located near Musselburgh, Scotland. During WWI the Canadian Expeditionary Force established a large training camp nearby. During WWII the Royal Air Force trained military pilots in the British commonwealth Air Training Plan just south of Carberry. Today the site is home to a large food processing facility, and agriculture is the backbone of the local economy, the main crops being cereals and potatoes.
