New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada

New Westminster, British Columbia, population 58,000, a city in Metro Vancouver, is situated to the south-east of Vancouver on the north shore of the Frazer River. Incorporated in 1877, it was a major outfitting location for prospectors heading for the Cariboo gold rush. Named by Queen Victoria, it gained the nickname, "The Royal City", still used today. New Westminster was the capital of British Columbia from 1858 to 1866.
