Leduc, Alberta, Canada

Leduc, Alberta, population 17,000, is situated south of Edmonton, the provincial capital. It was established as an agricultural area in 1899 by Robert Telford, a former North West Mounted Police officer, and named for Father Hippolyte Leduc, a Catholic priest who served the area. Close to the site of Alberta's major oil strike of 1947, Leduc's economy is dominated by the oil and gas industry.
