Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Calgary, Alberta, population 1,000,000, is situated in the southern part of the province. It was established as a North West Mounted Police fort in 1875, and named by Col James McLeod for his home in Scotland. Thousands of settlers arrived after the Canadian Pacific Railway was completed in 1883, and the area became the centre of ranching operations. Today, the economy of the city is closely tied to the petroleum industry. A showcase of cowboy culture, the Calgary Stampede is an annual 10 day event, featuring a rodeo, chuck wagon races, and a blacksmith competition along with many other attractions.
