Blackie, Alberta, Canada

Blackie, Alberta, population 400, is an unincorporated hamlet in the Municipal District of Foothills, located in the south western area of the province. Traditionally occupied by the Blackfoot Confederacy, the area was settled by Europeans after the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1883. The Village of Blackie was formed in 1911, and named for John Stewart Blackie, a professor of Greek at Edinburgh University. Today, the major economic base of the area is primarily agriculture and the oil and gas industry.
