Ash, Surrey, England

This Doomsday Book-listed village has little to show for its long history. Ash lays some 8 miles west of Guildford and is considered one of the largest villages within the area. The church of St Peter has a long history and was the central church for the area in the past drawing its congregation from as far away as Camberley. The museum, situated within the graveyard of St Peter's Church, in the long disused cemetery chapel, has outstanding stained glass war memorial windows. These form the highlight, as is it is possible that the gravestones outside the building tell us more about the history of Ash and are more interesting than some of the museum exhibits. The village has thousands of acres of military land with the adjacent common land, together with the restored Basingstoke canal, which gives good recreation facilities.
