The 'Post Office Directory, Essex' in the 1862 edition described Woodham Walter as 'near to Maldon and in its union and county court district in the hundred of Dengie, 3 miles to the west and 9 miles to the east of Chelmsford; it was known before the time of Edward the Confessor. The parish contains 2,421 acres, and its population in 1861 was 385. The church of St. Michael was built in 1562 and has a steeple and 3 bells. The living is a rectory, value £437, with residence, of which the Rev. L.Way is the patron, and the Rev. Guy Bryan M.A. of Balliol College , Oxford, incumbent.'
