     Abraham Hort was born circa 1787 at London, England; and he was the Brother of Rachel Hort [#12014].4,1,5,6 He was the Son of Nahum Hort and Jane Waley.7 He was the author of The University of Southampton hold : '... manuscript poetry and compositions by Mrs Rachel Waley (nee Hort) and eight volumes of verse, translations of poetry and prose by Rachel Hort, dedicated to her brother Abraham, 1808-36' between 1808 and 1836.5 He married Anne Joachim on 15 September 1813.1,8 Abraham Hort and Anne Joachim had the following eleven children:

He founded the Wellington Hebrew Congregation in 1843 and, on January 7, the first Jewish service was held in Wellington'

'.... in 1843 the grand patriarch and recognised founder of the Wellington Jewish community, Abraham Hort Senior arrived with his wife and four daughters. He had come with the sanction of the Chief Rabbi of the Great Synagogue, London. Abraham Hort brought with him in a religious capacity one David Isaacs who acted as a Shochet, Mohel and Chazan...'

in 1843.12,13 He was The New Zealand Company [Record Group] have 'Local and general inwards letters received by the Resident Agent, New Plymouth' relating to 'G Cutfield - 17 May 1843 Respecting ton of flour purchased by A Hort and Co' held in Wellington in 1843.14 He lived in 1859; 'Hort returned to London on the "Clantarf" in May 1859...... His daughter, Jessie, married Nathaniel Levin, and another, Margaret, married Sir Francis Dillon Bell.2'

He was described at the time of his son, Abraham's wedding as 'of London' on 18 May 1860.1 He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 12 Queens Road, Regents Park, London, England, as Head, widowed, age 71, birthplace London, and he was 'Independent.4' He was described at the time of his son, Abraham's death as 'of Wellington, New Zealand' on 7 June 1862.1 He was described at the time of his daughter, Caroline's wedding as 'of Exeter, late of New Zealand'

on 25 December 1863.1 He was portrait painted "The Bell family Collection, Alexander Turnbull Library", National Library of New Zealand, holds a Carte de visite portrait of Abraham Hort [ca 1865] with the following information on this image: 'Head and shoulders studio portrait of Abraham Hort, taken ca 1865 by an unidentified photographer. Hort has a beard and is wearing a dark suit with waistcoat' circa 1865.15 He died on 18 October 1869; and the following notice appeared in 'The London Jewish Chronicle':

'HORT     5-Nov-1869 D[eath]     On 18th October at 6, St Stephen's Rd., Westbourne Park, Abraham Hort, aged 82'

His death was recorded at Kensington Registration district in the December quarter 1869.1,16,17 His estate was probated on 17 November 1869; and the 1869 National Probate Calandar records he was 'late of Cheltenham in the County of Gloucestershire Merchant deceased' and his Will was proved 'at the Principal Registry by Montague Alex of 2 Rodney-terrace Cheltenham aforesaid Gentleman one of the Executors.18'

      Sidney Myer was also known as Sydney Myer.6 He was born on 10 June 1841 at Hereford, Herefordshire, England; and his birth was recorded as Sydney Myer at Hereford Registration district in the September quarter 1841.7,8,9,10,4,11,12 He was the son of Abraham Albert Myer and Selina Davis.4,5 Sidney Myer had a Birth 'of a son and heir' notice published in The Hereford Times on 12 June 1841.13 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1851 at Bye Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Son, age 10, birthplace Hereford, and he was a Scholar.14 He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Commercial Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Sydney Myer, Son, age 19, birthplace Hereford, and he was a Watchmaker.15 He married Sophia Rosa Alex, daughter of Montague Alex and Belinda Jones, on 10 June 1869 at The Masonic Hall, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England; and their marriage was registered in the June quarter 1869 at Cheltenham Registration district.

Sidney Myer appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 9 East Street, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Head, married, age 29, birthplace Hereford, and he was a Silversmith and Pawnbroker. He was living with his Wife Sophia, Daughter Hannah, Son Abraham and Brother Hermann. Also in the household was three Domestic Servants: Monthly Nurse, Cook and Nurse. His Assistant Pawnbroker William E Elliott, also lived in the house.22

He was a beneficiary with his widowed mother and his stepbrother Grenville, of his father's will and which was proved on 28 October 1872.23 He was executor to Montague Alex having married his daughter Sophia Rose and he 'practised as a silversmith in Southampton' in 1876.24 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 1 East Park Terrace, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Head, married, age 39, birthplace Hereford, Herefordshire, and he was a Silversmith and Pawnbroker. He lived on 28 March 1894 at Sunderland Avenue, London, England.26 He was executor to Harriet Silverstone (née Alex) and the 1894 National Probate Calendar has records:

'Silverstone Harriet of 79 Shirland-road Paddington Middlesex (wife of Simeon Cohen Silverstone) died 3 July 1894 Probate London 20 July to the said Simeon Cohen Silverstone and Sydney Myer gentleman' on 30 July 1894.27 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 30 Pembridge Gardens, Kensington, London, England, as Sydney Myer, Brother-in-law [of Leah (Alex) Nathan], married, age 59, birthplace Hereford, Herefordshire, and he was a 'Retired ... Chemist.28'

      Hermann Alex Myer was also known as Herman Ernest Alex Myer.3,4 Hermann Alex Myer was also known as Major Ernest Alex Myer.5,6,7,8 He was born on 23 November 1874 at Southampton, Hampshire, England; and his birth was registered in the December quarter 1874 at Southampton Registration district.1,9,3,4 He was the son of Sidney Myer and Sophia Rosa Alex.1,2 Hermann Alex Myer appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 1 East Park Terrace, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Son, age 6, birthplace Southampton, Hampshire, and he was a Scholar.10 He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 168 Sutherland Avenue, Maida Vale, London, England, as Son, age 16, birthplace Southampton, and he was a Scholar.9 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Pembridge Gardens, Kensington, London, England, as Ernest A Mayer, Nephew [of Leah (Alex) Nathan], single, age 26, birthplace Southampton, Hampshire, and he was a 'Soldr. Lt Kings Royal Rifles 10 V13 (Army Off).5' He married Emmy Jacob in 1903 at Bayswater, London, England; and their marriage was registered in the March quarter 1903 at Paddington Registration district, London. They had no children.11,12,13 Hermann Alex Myer was 'Honorary Solicitor to the Jewish Board of Guardians Industrial Department' circa 1910.12 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Emscote, Grenfell Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, as Ernest Alex Myer, Head. married, age 36, birthplace Southampton, Hampshire, and he was a Solicitor. His wife, a house parlourmaid and a cook completed the household.14 He was executor to his Father and the 1911 National Probate Calendar records that he was of '30 Pembridge-gardens Bayswater Middlesex' and Administration (with Will) was granted in London to 'Ernest Alex Myer solicitor.' on 28 June 1911.15 He lived in 1913 at 46 London Wall, City of London, London, England; and he was recorded as Ernest Alexander Myer, a Solicitor, age 37.16 He lived in 1914 at 46 & 47 London Wall, City of London, London, England; and Emscote, Maidenhead.17 He died on 3 April 1915 at age 40; in the Great War [WWI] in France.      'Historical Information: A little west of the crossroads known to the army as 'Windy Corner' was a house used as a battalion headquarters and dressing station. The cemetery grew up beside this house. The original cemetery is now Plots I and II and Rows A to S of Plot III. It was begun by the 2nd Division in January 1915, and used extensively by the 4th (Guards) Brigade in and after February. It was closed at the end of May 1916, when it contained 681 graves. After the Armistice it was increased when more than 2,700 graves were brought in from the neighbouring battlefields - in particular the battlefields of Neuve-Chapelle, the Aubers Ridge and Festubert - and from small cemeteries. Guards Cemetery now contains 3,443 burials and commemorations of the First World War. 2,197 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to 36 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials commemorate six casualties buried in Indian Village North Cemetery, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire, and five Indian soldiers originally buried in the Guards Cemetery but afterwards cremated in accordance with the requirements of their faith. The cemetery was designed by Charles Holden.6,18,19,20,21'

'Myer Ernest Alex of Emscote Maidenhead Berkshire and 47 London Wall London major 6th City of London Rifles died 3 April 1915 in France on active service Probate London 27 July to Emma Myer widow and James Henry Solomon esquire.23' He was commemorated in the Great War and The National Archives contain his WWI Campaign Medal Card showing the Theatre of War he first served in was France from 17 March 1915. He was awarded the Victory, British War and 1915 Star Medals. On the reverse side of the Medal Card is recorded 'Returned 6 October 1920' and the address '123 Inverness Terrace, Bayswater, London, W.24'

American Merchnt' between 1912 and 1917 at 31 Duke Street, St Mary Axe, City of London, London, England.12 He was recorded arriving on a UK Incoming Passenger list sailing aboard the Arlanza from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Southampton, England, in 1st class, age 38, profession Merchant on 17 June 1914.13 He was listed on 17 September 1915 as Denzil Alex Myer, Merchant of 31 Duke Street, St Mary Axe, E.C., in The London Gazette Issue 29300 published on the 17 September 1915 concerning Land Registry, Land Transfer Acts, 1875 and 1897, for Title 184201, land at Mile End Old Town, London, described as 'Freehold buildings and land, 14½, Trafalgar Square'. This was jointly undertaken with Gerald George Samuel.14,15

     'Historical Information: The Basra Memorial bears the names of more than 40,500 members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the operations in Mesopotamia from the Autumn of 1914 to the end of August 1921 and whose graves are not known'

     'Location Information: Until 1997 the Basra Memorial was located on the main quay of the naval dockyard at Maqil, on the west bank of the Shatt-al-Arab, about 8 kilometres north of Basra. Because of the sensitivity of the site, the Memorial was moved by presidential decree. The move, carried out by the authorities in Iraq, involved a considerable amount of manpower, transport costs and sheer engineering on their part, and the Memorial has been re-erected in its entirety. The Basra Memorial is now located 32 kilometres along the road to Nasiriyah, in the middle of what was a major battleground during the first Gulf War. The Panel Numbers quoted at the end of each entry relate to the panels dedicated to the Regiment served with. The following notice appeared in The London Gazette Issue 30168 published on the 6 July 1917: 'DENZIL MYER, Deceased. Pursuant to the Statute 22nd and 23rd Victoria, chapter 35 entitled "An Act to further amend the Law of Property and to relieve Trustees." NOTICE is hereby given that all creditors and other persons having any debts, claims or demands against the estate of Denzil Myer, otherwise Denzil Alex Myer, otherwise Denzil Grenville Alex Myer, late of 30, Pembridge-gardens, Bayswater, in the county of Middlesex. Second Lieutenant in His Majesty's Army (who died on the 25th day of February,1917, in Mesopotamia, on active service, and whose will was proved in the Principal Probate Registry of His Majesty's High (Court of Justice on the 18th of June, 1917, by Joseph Alex Myer and Charles Edward Sebag-Montefiore, the executors named in the said will), are hereby required to send particulars, in writing, of their debts, claims or demands to us, the undersigned, as solicitors to the said executors, on or 'before the 10th day of August,1917, after which date the said executors will proceed to distribute the assets of the said deceased among the persons entitled thereto, having regard only to the debts, claims and demands of which they shall then have had notice; and that they will not be liable for the assets, or any part thereof, so distributed, to any person or persons of whose debt, claim or demand they shall not then have had notice.—'Dated this 2nd day of July,1917. He was commemorated as 'Killed in action at Messopotamia 24th February 1917 age 42' at Willesden Jewish Cemetery, Willesden, Middlesex, England.24 He was commemorated according to V. D. Lipman with the Samuel and Myer Home which was the first connection the Jewish Board of Guardians had with the general welfare of boys, as distinct from provisions such as apprenticeships, and its history was as follows:

     '... Gerald Samuel (Honorary Secretary) and Denzil Myer (a member of the Apprenticing Committee) had purchased a freehold of a house in Trafalgar Square, Stepney, intending to adapt it as a Home for ten working boys, and to live there and run it personally. They were both killed in action in 1917 and the second to be killed, Gerald Samuel, bequeathed the house and £10,000 for its maintenance to the Board [of Guardians], on the condition that two or more gentlemen would live there to supervise the home and look after the boys... In 1923 a married couple became Honorary Warden and Matron and a gift from Lady Bearsted (Gerald Samuel's mother), made it possible to take in the full complement of ten boys.25,26,27,28,29'
