     Alice Jones was born on 13 June 1859 at Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England; and her birth was recorded at Shrewsbury Registration district in the June quarter 1859.^1,3,4,5,6,7 She was the daughter of Horatio Micholls Jones LDS and Leah Levason.¹ Alice Jones appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at St Johns Hill, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, as Daughter, age 1, birthplace Shrewsbury, Shropshire.⁸ She appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at St Johns Hill, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, as, Daughter, age 11, birthplace Shrewsbury, and she was a Scholar.⁹ She and her sister were mentioned in the will of their grandfather Lewis Levason written on 4 June 1875.¹⁰ She appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Castle Street, Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, as Daughter, age 21, unmarried, birthplace Shrewsbury, Shropshire, and no occupation was given.¹

She was executor to her stepmother and The 1922 National Probate Calendar records: 'Jones Isabella of Queen's Lodge Whitchurch-lane Edgware Middlesex widow died 15 June 1922 Probate London 11 August 1922 to Alice Jones spinster' on 11 August 1922.¹¹ She died in 1938 at Hove, Sussex, England; and her death was recorded at Hove Registration district in the December quarter 1938, at age 79.^5,7,12

      Her married name was Alex.¹ Belinda Jones was born on 18 December 1813 at Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.^3,4,5,6,7 She was the daughter of David Jones and Leah Micholls.¹ Belinda Jones married Montague Alex, son of Solomon Alex and Rachael Jones, before 25 November 1837 at Seel Street Synagogue, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; and their marriage was registered in the December quarter 1837 at Liverpool Registration district.^{8,1,9,10,11,12,13,14,15} The Bristol Mercury (Bristol, England), Saturday, November 25, 1837; Issue 2492 announced their marriage as 'Mr Montague Alex, dentist of that town [Cheltenham], to Belinda Jones, 5th daughter of Mr Jones, of Liverpool.^13,1'


Belinda Jones appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at High Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, as age 20 and she was not born in the county.¹⁶ She appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Uphampton, Ombersley, Worcestershire, England, as Visitor to John Hooman, accompanied by her Daughter Sophia, married, age 33, birthplace Yarmouth, Norfolk, and she was a Dentist's Wife.⁵ She died on 6 February 1861 at 2 Rodney Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, at age 47; and the following announcement was published in the press:

     'Death 6.2.1861 at 2 Rodney Terrace, Cheltenham, deeply regretted, after many years of suffering, beloved wife of Montague Alex.^{17,18,19,7,20}'

She was the subject of an obituary in the Cheltenham Looker-On '... at 2, Rodney Terrace, deeply regretted, after many years of suffering, Belinda, the beloved wife of Montague Alex, Esq... ' on 9 February 1861.²¹ She was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.²² Her estate was probated on 15 January 1863; and The 1863 National Probate Calendar records: 'Alex Belinda... Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of Belinda Alex (Wife of Montague Alex) late of 2 Rodney-terrace Cheltenham in the County of Gloucester deceased who died 6 February 1861 at Rodney-terrace aforesaid were granted at Gloucester to the said Montague Alex of 2 Rodney-terrace aforesaid Dentist he having been first sworn.²⁰'

     Montague Alex was born circa 1815 at London, England.^4,5,6 He was the son of Solomon Alex and Rachael Jones.⁴ Montague Alex married Belinda Jones, daughter of David Jones and Leah Micholls, before 25 November 1837 at Seel Street Synagogue, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; and their marriage was registered in the December quarter 1837 at Liverpool Registration district.^{7,4,8,9,10,11,12,3,13} The Bristol Mercury (Bristol, England), Saturday, November 25, 1837; Issue 2492 announced their marriage as 'Mr Montague Alex, dentist of that town [Cheltenham], to Belinda Jones, 5th daughter of Mr Jones, of Liverpool.^12,4'


Montague Alex was listed by Torode in The Hebrew Community of Cheltenham where Torode says:

     'Montague Alex, Isaiah's brother, appears in the Members' lists from 1838. He was born in London in 1817 and followed the profession of Surgeon Dentist in Cheltenham from 1839. Presumably like his contemporaries he travelled the circuit until he settled in Cheltenham. He had first married in Liverpool in 1837, Belinda Jones, daughter of David and Leah Jones of Shrewsbury. In 1841 he formed a partnership with Joseph Levason but this had been dissolved by 1843. Montague served several terms as President, Secretary or Treasurer. He married twice and his two daughters were married in Cheltenham's Masonic Hall. By 1845, Montague's surgery was at 21 Rodney Terrace. Joseph Levason, his partner, was the brother of Lewis Levason of Painswick Lawn, a benefactor and former President of the synagogue.⁹'

He was listed by Hillam as belonging to one of the 'Dental Families Established in the Provinces before 1855' as follows:

     'Alex, J. Cheltenham, Oxford, [Directory entries] 1830, 1835
     Alex, Montague Cheltenham, [Directory entries] 1839-1855.¹⁴'

Sellick in Whitehaven and its Jews 1774-1850 says that on 3 December 1839 Joseph Levason 'first advertised himself as being “of the firm of Levason and Alex, 90 High Street, Cheltenham". (footnote 125) He explained that he had entered into partnership with Mr Montague Alex, and due to increased pressure of business, Whitehaven would now receive visits only three or four times a year.¹⁵


He appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at High Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, as age 25, not born in the county and he was a Surgeon.¹⁶ Named in The London Gazette Issue 19988 published on the 15 June 1841' which contained the following item:

     ''NOTICE is hereby given, that we the undersigned, Lewis Levason, Montague Alex, and Joseph Levason, carrying on the profession or business, in copartnership, of Surgeon Dentists, in the city and county of Hereford, in the city and county of Worcester, at Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud, and Cirencester, in the county of Gloucester, at Whitehaven, Cockermouth, and Workington, in the county of Cumberland, at Kendall, in the county of Westmoreland, and at Ulverstone, in Lancashire, have this day mutually dissolved the said copartnership, but so far only as regards the said Lewis Levason, who retires from all the above-mentioned concerns. All debts and credits of the said partnership will be paid and received, respectively, by the continuing partners: As witness our hands this 5th day of June 1841. Lewis Levason. Montague Alex. Joseph Levason.¹⁷'


He lived on 4 August 1841 at 90 High Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England; at the time the death of his son Isaiah Edward Alex was announced.¹⁸ According to Sellick in Whitehaven and its Jews 1774-1850: '‘By October 1841, Levason had changed his address, and “the firm of Levason, Alex, & Co.” was at 18 Promenade Villas and 21 Rodney Street, Cheltenham, an expansion that heralded the final farewell to Whitehaven. (footnote 127).¹⁵'


According to Torode, Joseph Levason's 'partnership with Montague Alex, his brother in law by marriage, dissolved in 1843 after only two years. Perhaps there was a crisis in his life for this termination of partnership coincided with his severance of ties with Whitehaven and his move to Hereford'. Torode goes on to add the death of three of Joseph's children and to conclude it was 'a very sad family indeed'.

This notice appeared in The London Gazette Issue 20373 published on the 13 August 1844:

     'Cheltenham, Aug. 12th, 1844. WE, the undersigned, Montague Alex and Joseph Levason, Surgeon Dentists, of Cheltenham, in the county of Gloucester, having carried on the business or profession of Surgeon Dentists, in the counties of Gloucester and Hereford, by virtue and under a deed of Copartnership, bearing date the 1st day of August 1839, which said deed has been determined and ended by lapse of time; this is, therefore, to give notice, that the said copartnership is thereby dissolved accordingly: As witness our hands this 12th day of August 1844. Montague Alex. Joseph Levason'

The following advertisement subsequently appeared:

He takes this opportunity to acknowledge the very distinguished patronage conferred on him during the many years of his residence in Cheltenham, also to state that, from the facilities afforded him, he is enabled to REDUCE HIS CHARGES to the lowest possible scale compatible with the proper exercise of his Profession ........... he will guarantee all cases of Artificial Teeth, from one to a complete set, supplied by him to answer all the purposes of the original, and which for durability, beauty of finish, and accuracy of fitting cannot be surpassed.

'Children's Teeth regulated upon an unerring principle.........^19,20,21'

He was recorded as Sergeon Dentist in Harper's Cheltenham Directory and Guide in 1844 at 18 Promenade Villas, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.²² Recorded in Brass Plate and Brazen Impudence - Dental practice in the provinces, 1755-1855 where Hillam argues in her section on Mobility that 'experience in London established itself at an early date in the provincial imagination as an indicator of expertise and sophistication. Few opportunities were lost to emphasise a London connection, however remote..... Wood of Brighton thought it sufficient recommendation that he visited London monthly, whilst Montague Alex of Cheltenham [Jordon, 1851, page 16] reassured his patients that his "system of practice combines all the improved methods adopted in London" '.

In a section on Limiting factors Hillam says 'On occasion they [dentists] are prepared to reduce their fees to draw in patients or, as Montague Alex puts it, "to render the Dental Act more extensively useful" '[G Rowe, 'Illustrated Cheltenham Guide (1845)].

She also cites him as a example when discussing interpreting 'The census figures presented for Cheltenham for 1841' that 'there was only one dentist in the town... a woman over 20.' While 'The directories, on the other hand, suggest there were eight: Montague Alex and his two partners the Levasons, George Cullis, Thomas Palmer, George Shew, Somerset Tibbs and Robert Pearsall'. She goes on to explain that 'the enumerators' returns for Cheltenham reveal that Alex and Cullis are listed as surgeons.... (The Levasons do not appear at their directory address which was Alex's private home)' and eventually 'at local level, eight male dentists have become one woman.²³'

He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 21 Rodney Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, as age 34, married, birthplace London and he was a Dentist. A transcript reads:

He was advertising in The Times: 'To Parent and Guardians - a well-educated and gentlemanly youth to be articled to a dentist. He will have every advantage and be treated as one of the family. Apply to Mr Montague Alex, surgeon dentist, 2 Rodney Terrace, Cheltenham' on 5 July 1856.²⁵ He was listed in Slater's Commercial Directory of Cheltenham, as one of ten Dentists (George Penny lived nearby at 14 Rodney Terrace) between 1858 and 1859 at 2 Rodney Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.²⁶ He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 2 Rodney Terrace, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, as Head, widowed, age 44, birthplace London, Middlesex, and he was a Dentist. He was living with his Daughters Leah and Sophia, and Son Montague. The household also contained a Cook and House Servant.²⁷

He was executor of his wife's estate and The 1863 National Probate Calandar records:

'Alex Belinda. Effects under £200. 15 January Letters of Administration of the Personal estate and effects of Belinda Alex (Wife of Montague Alex) late of 2 Rodney-terrace Cheltenham in the County of Gloucester deceased who died 6 February 1861 at Rodney-terrace aforesaid were granted at Gloucester to the said Montague Alex of 2 Rodney-terrace aforesaid Dentist he having been first sworn'

' on 15 January 1863.²⁸ He married Caroline Hort, daughter of Abraham Hort and Anne Joachim, on 23 December 1863 at London, England; and their marriage was recorded at London City Registration district in the December quarter 1863. Their marriage appeared in the London Jewish Chronicle as follows:

     'ALEX 25-Dec-1863 M On 23rd December, Montague Alex of Cheltenham to Caroline, daughter of Abraham Hort of Exeter, late of New Zealand'

It was also announced in Trewman's Exeter Flying Post or Plymouth and Cornish Advertiser (Exeter, England) of Wednesday, December 30, 1863; Issue 5097.^{29,30,31,32,33,34}

Montague Alex was executor of his Father-in-law and the 1869 National Probate Calandar records Abraham Hort was 'late of Cheltenham in the County of Gloucestershire Merchant deceased' and his Will was proved 'at the Principal Registry by Montague Alex of 2 Rodney-terrace Cheltenham aforesaid Gentleman one of the Executors' on 17 November 1869.³⁵ He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 2 Rodney Terrace, St Mary, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England, as Head, married, age 55, birthplace London, and he was a Surgeon Dentist. He was living with his Wife Caroline. Also in the household was two Domestic Servants: General Servant and Cook.³⁶

He was executor to his wife and The 1871 National Probate Calendar has this entry: 'Alex Caroline. Effects under £100. 18 October. Administration of the effects of Caroline Alex (Wife of Montague Alex) late 2 Rodney-terrace Cheltenham in the County of Gloucestershire who died 19 September 1871 at 2 Rodney-terrace was granted at the Principal Registry to the said Montague Alex of 2 Rodney-terrace Dentist.³⁷'

He was listed in The Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc (Portsmouth, England), Wednesday, August 2, 1876; Issue 4587 as one of the bretheren at Lymington Grand Lodge of Freemasons of the Province of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight: Montague Alex, P.P.G., J.W. (Gloucester)'.³⁸

He died on 3 December 1876 at 1 East Park Terrace, Southampton, Hampshire, England; and his death, at age 60, was registered in the December quarter 1876 at Southampton Registration district. The following announcement was published:

     'Montague Alex
     Death 3.12.1876 at his residence 1 East Park Terrace, Southampton, formerly of Cheltenham, aged 60'.^39,40,41,42

He was the subject of an obituary in the Western Daily Press, Bristol on 13 December 1876.⁴² His estate was probated; and The 1876 National Probate Calendar has this entry: 'Alex Montague. Effects under £5,000. Resworn November 1878 under £3,000. 29 December. The Will with a Codicil of Montague Alex formerly of Cheltenham in the County of Gloucester but late of 1 East-Park-terrace in the County of Southampton Gentleman who died 3 December 1876 at 1 East-Park-terrace was proved at the Principal Registry by Leah Rachel Phillips of 1 East-Park-terrace Widow the Daughter and Sydney Myer of York-House York-buildings Southampton Silversmith and Pawnbroker the Executors.⁴³'

      Hannah Jones was also known as Hannah Hamilberg Jones.^6,7 Her married name was Myer.¹ She was born on 7 August 1815 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.^{8,1,9,10,4,11,12,13} She was the daughter of David Jones and Leah Micholls.^1,4,5 Hannah Jones appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Great George Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England, as age 25 and she was not born in the county; unlike her sisters, no occupation was given.¹⁴ She was She kept house for her brother Grenville David Jones until he died aged 40.⁷ She married Abraham Albert Myer on 27 August 1845 at 11 Bridge Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England; According to Alex Jacob:

'At the time of their marriage Hannah's sister Rebecca and her husband Joseph were living in Hereford thus making an intimate family group in that city. The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Levason and David Jones and the officiating Minister was Isaac Pulver'.

The following announcement appeared in the Liverpool Mercury '...at Hereford, Mr Myer, of that city, [married] to Hannah, sixth daughter of the late Mr David Jones, St John's-hill, Shrewsbury. Also Mr Drielsma, of this town, [married] to Sarah, seventh daughter of the above.^{1,15,16,17,18,19}'

Hannah Jones and Abraham Albert Myer had a Marriage notice published in The Hereford Times on 30 August 1845 and in The Hereford Journal on 3 September 1845.¹⁹ Hannah Jones appeared on the census of 31 March 1851 at Bye Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Wife, age 34, birthplace Yarmouth, Norfolk.²⁰ She appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Commercial Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Wife, age 44, birthplace Yarmouth, Norfolk.²¹ She appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 53 Commercial Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Wife, age 55, birthplace Great Yarmouth.²² She was beneficiar of her husband's will, valued at £9000, which he left to her as his widow, and his two sons - Grenville and Sidney of Southampton and which was proved on 28 October 1872.²³ She appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 50 Cambridge Road, Willesden, Middlesex, England, as Boarder, widowed, age 65, birthplace Great Yarmouth and she was an 'Annuitant'. The full entry reads:

She appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 9 Mowbray Road, Willesden, Middlesex, England, as Mother-in-law [of Alexander Jacob], widowed, age 85, born Yarmouth, Norfolk. The Companion living in the Household could be for her.²⁵


She died on 9 February 1902 at England at age 86; and her death was registered in the March quarter 1902 at Hendon Registration district. 'The district of Hendon spans the boundaries of the counties of Greater London and Middlesex.^{26,27,28,4,29,13}'

She was commemorated 'The Hebrew Community of Cheltenham, Gloucester and Stroud' says that 'Hannah his [Abraham's] widow is remembered on Abraham's burial stone in Cheltenham's Burial Ground:

     "In loving memory of Hannah Mayer, widow of the late Abraham Mayer, born 7th August Great Yarmouth, died 9th February 1902, interred at Willesden. The children rise up and call her Blessed."²⁹ '

Her estate was probated on 14 April 1902; and the 1902 National Probate Calendar records she was 'of 9 Mowbray-road Brondesbury Middlesex widow' and Administration was granted in London 'to Leah Jacob (wife of Alexander Jacob).³⁰'

     Abraham Albert Myer was born on 2 September 1796 at Bornheim, Hessen, Germany; and he has been described as being 'of Chelmsford' and as 'a first generation settler from the Rhineland. Abraham set up business in Hereford as a pawnbroker, which developed into a jewellery, silversmith, watchmaker and clothing establishment. Abraham naturalised as a British citizen and even became a local town councillor!'

An extract from Cecil Roth's 'The Rise of Provincial Jewry' reads:

     'Another Hereford family was that of Abraham Myer (1796-1872), whose son, Horatio Myer, was well-known in the Anglo-Jewish community a generation ago.^{4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14}'

He was the son of Simeon Myer (c1770-1801) and Libet Meudl (1778-1833) of Bornheim, Germany. His father was a Teacher and he was one of six children on 3 September 1796.^15,16,17,18 He immigrated circa 1821 to Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England.¹⁸ He married Selina Davis on 30 January 1839 at 172 High Street, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England; through Cheltenham Synagogue and their marriage was registered in the March quarter 1839 at Cheltenham Registration district, as Albert Myer and Selina Davis.^{19,15,20,21,22}

Abraham Albert Myer was 'a prominent businessman and first Jewish Mayor of Hereford'. Abraham Myer's great-grandson Alex Jacob says of him and the family:

'Abraham Myer, originally Mayer but altered when he settled in England was born in Bornheim near Bonn in 1796. He had three brothers and two sisters and at the age of 18, after the defeat of Napoleon, he was conscripted into the Prussian Army which had taken over the Rhineland. As soon as his three years of compulsory army life was over Abraham came to England accompanied by a relative. He found his way to Cheltenham where since the beginning of the century a small community of Jews had existed, and he knew that there were also Jews in Gloucester as well as Ross and Hereford. He lost no time in associating himself with the Gloucester and later, Cheltenham Congregations and at the time of his death was the oldest member. He probably began business as a pawnbroker later becoming a jeweller, watchmaker and fashionable clothier. A watch bearing his name as maker is still in the possession of one of his descendants. He married in 1838 and moved to Hereford at the age of 43........ While living in Hereford he was fully involved in the life of the city, a friend of the Bishop, Freemason, County Councillor for Ledbury Ward, and other civic associations. He spoke French and German with far more ease than he did English and was, nevertheless, a very popular and respected man.^1,23'

He appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as age 30, not born in the county, and he was a Pawn Broker.²⁴ He was listed in trade directories

between 1842 and 1856 at Bye Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England.²⁵ He married Hannah Jones, daughter of David Jones and Leah Micholls, on 27 August 1845 at 11 Bridge Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England; According to Alex Jacob:

'At the time of their marriage Hannah's sister Rebecca and her husband Joseph were living in Hereford thus making an intimate family group in that city. The witnesses to the marriage were Joseph Levason and David Jones and the officiating Minister was Isaac Pulver'.

The following announcement appeared in the Liverpool Mercury '...at Hereford, Mr Myer, of that city, [married] to Hannah, sixth daughter of the late Mr David Jones, St John's-hill, Shrewsbury. Also Mr Drielsma, of this town, [married] to Sarah, seventh daughter of the above.^{1,26,23,27,28,29}'

Abraham Albert Myer and Hannah Jones had a Marriage notice published in The Hereford Times on 30 August 1845 and in The Hereford Journal on 3 September 1845.²⁹ Abraham Albert Myer was reported in The Era (London, England) as follows: 'Progress of the Jews.—For the first time a member of the Jewish persuasion has been elected a seat in the corporation of the city of Hereford, whose charter dates from the time of Richard I. Mr Abraham Myer, silversmith, of Bye-street, in that city, is one of two gentlemen selected for Ledbury-ward at the recent election' on 10 November 1850.³⁰ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1851 at Bye Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Abraham Albert Myers, Head, married, age 56, birthplace 'N. K. London', and he was a Pawnbroker and Silversmith. He was living with his second wife, Hannah, and children Sydney, Leah, Grenville and Horatio. Also in the household was his Nephew Susman Myer, from 'Preußen, Rhenith', a 13 year old Scholar. The household also contained his Assistant, his Apprentice, and several Domestic Servants.² He was listed in a trade directory in 1859 at Commercial Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England.³¹ He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Commercial Street, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Head, married, age 60, birthplace Middlesex, London, and he was a Silversmith and Pawnbroker. He was living with his Wife Hannah, Sons Grenville, Horatio, Hermann and Sydney, and his Daughters Leah and Josephine. Also living in the household was a Cook and Housemaid, and a Foreman whose occupation was Clothier, and a Shopman, whose occupation was Pawnbroker.⁴

He was listed in Slater's Directory of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Shropshire & Wales, as 'Myer, Abraham, pawnbroker 55, Commercial st.' in 1868.³² He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 53 Commercial Road, Hereford, Herefordshire, England, as Head, age 70, birthplace London. He was living with his Wife Hannah, Daughters Ada and Leah, and Son Grenville. Also in the household was his Assistant Silversmith and three Domestic Servants; one of whom was a Groom.³³

He was the subject of an obituary in the Pall Mall GazetteLondon as age 76 at Hereford on 5 October 1872.³⁹ He was buried at Cheltenham Cemetery, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England; and according to Rabbi Bernard Susser, his gravestone records he 'came from Hereford'. Alex Jacob's information says 'his body was taken by train for burial in Cheltenham'.^40,23

He left a will on 28 October 1872; 'valued at £9000 which he left to Hannah, his widow, and his two sons - Grenville and Sidney of Southampton.^41,42

He was commemorated a year later '.... Mrs Moses donated a lovely sanctification cup in memory of her departed and lamented father who had died 1st October 1872. The cup bears the following inscription:

Henry Jones was a Dentist, who had branches in Kent in the 1840s and early fifties [Christine Hillam cites him as a example of one of the 'dentists who began practice in the provinces and who, on moving to London, retained their provincial practice, presumably to be operated by another member of the family or by a manager' from '1831-55 in Kent and 1833-55 (Jones and Bell) in London', the terminal date not necessarily indicating the end of the practice] and was based between 1841 and 1851 at 7 Pall Mall, London, England.^7,1,8,9,10 He appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Pall Mall, St James, Westminster, London, England, as age 42, not born in the county, and he was a Dentist. His household contained an 'H Jones', age 35, who may be his cousin Henry Jones [#5136], an Apprentice George Watt age 20, George Watt's three children, and two Family Servants.⁴ He lived circa 1852 at Sackville Street, Piccadilly, London, England.¹¹ He died on 13 December 1854 at London, England; and his death was recorded at St James Registration district in the December quarter 1854.^12,13,14 He was buried at Brompton Cemetery, Fulham Road, London, England; and a photograph of his gravestone is on another internet website.¹³

     Edward Abraham Jones was born on 6 August 1823 at Norwich, Norfolk, England.^4,5 He was the son of Isaiah Jones and Esther Davis.^1,3 Edward Abraham Jones appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Trinity Square, Newington, Surrey, England, as age 15, not born in the county and he was a Dentist.⁶ He was a Dentist at the time of his marriage based at 55 Connaught Terrace, London, England.¹ He was based in 1851 at 129 The Strand, Westminster, London, England.^1,7 He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at Savoy St John, Strand, London, England, as Son, unmarried, age 28, birthplace Norwich, Norfolk, and he was a Dentist. Other household members were Esther, his Mother, Isaiah, his Father, and Servant Ann Collett from Gloucestershire, who was 20.⁸

He married Rosa Jones, daughter of Henry Jones and Elizabeth Benjamin, on 6 April 1859; and their marriage was registered in the June quarter 1859 at St James Registration district. 'The district St James is an alternative name for St James Westminster and it spans the boundaries of the counties of London and Middlesex.^1,9,10,11,12' Edward Abraham Jones was executor with his Mother of his Father's Will on 20 April 1859.¹³ He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 55 Connaught Terrace, Paddington, London, England, as Head, married, age 36, birthplace Norwich, Norfolk, and he was a Surgeon Dentist. He was living with his Wife Rosa, Son Isaiah and Mother Esther. Also in the household was Visitor and Nephew Isaiah Jones. In addition to this the household contained two Domestic Servants: Cook and Housemaid.¹⁴

He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 111 Edgware Road, Paddington, London, England, as Head, married, age 46, birthplace Norwich, Norfolk, and he was a Surgeon Dentist. He was living with his Wife Rosa; Sons Alexander, Charles, Edmond, Frederick, Henry and Isaiah; Niece Annie and Mother Esther. Also in the household were three Domestic Servants: Cook, Housemaid and Nurse.¹⁵

He was executor of his uncle's estate and the following information appeared in The London Gazette Issue 28522 published on the 15 August 1911:

     '.....     The testator, Alexander Jones, late of No. 4, Prince of Wales-terrace, Kensington, Middlesex, Esquire, died on the 13th February, 1881, partially intestate as to his real estate. The testator's heir-at-law has been found to be his grand-son John Alexander Jones (son of the testator's son also named John Alexander Jones). Lady Cusack-Smith claims that she is a grand-daughter of the testator's only sister and that if the said John Alexander Jones, the grandson, were to die in her lifetime, she (Lady Cusack-Smith) would be sole heiress-at-law of the testator, Alexander Jones.......'

The Will of Alexander Jones late of 4 Prince-of-Wales-terrace Kensington in the County of Middlesex and of 1 Walbrook in the City of London Esquire who died 13 February 1881 at 8 Bedford-place Brighton in the County of Sussex was proved in the Principal Registry by Ann Benjamin of 4 Prince-of-Wales-terrace Widow the Daughter Joshua Moses Jones of 34 Elgin-road Harrow-road in the County of Middlesex Gentleman the Nephew Edward Abraham Jones of 53 Maida-vale in the County of Middlesex Surgeon-Dentist and Walter Barron Jones of 38 New-London-road Chelmsford in the County of Essex Surgeon-Dentist the Executors.¹⁶'

'Opinions of the Press' came from the Morning Post March 10 1853, Sunday Times February 13 1853, Church of England Quarterly Review April 1853 and Hastings and St Leonards News January 21 1853. The advertisement finished 'Mr Jones attends 4 Castle-street, Hastings, every Tuesday'.⁸

He placed copious advertisements for his Dentistry in various papers such as the Brighton Gazette, Sussex Advertiser, and Morning Post London between 1853 and 1865.⁹ He was listed in The London and Provincial Medical Directory of '31 New Bridge st. Blackfriars. E.C. and 9 Ship st. Brighton (Dentist) M.R.C.S. Eng. 1848; Mem. Ordontal. Soc Author of "Observations on the Diseases and Loss of the Teeth," Etc. ' in 1860.¹⁰ He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Ship Street, Brighton, Sussex, England, as Head, unmarried, age 33, birthplace Newington, Surrey, and he was a 'Member College of Surgeons'. His Dental Assistant, Thomas J McChristie, and two House Servants completed the household.^11,12

     Frederick Hart Jones was born on 7 March 1829 at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.^1,2,3 He was the son of John Jones and Mary Ann Watson.¹ Frederick Hart Jones was baptized on 24 June 1831 at Holy Sepulchre, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England; age 2, parents abode Jesus Lane, and a transcript reads:

He was apprenticed to Robert Ramsom. A copy of his indenture has survived and appeared in 'The British Dental Journal' Volume 193, No. 5, September 14 2002 (Fig. 6).

The article was entitled 'Ethics; 'In consideration of the love he bears.' Apprenticeship in the nineteenth century, and the development of professional ethics in dentistry. Part 1. The practical reality.'

'CROSS FERTILISATION

The BDA documents include three indentures the particular interest of which is their suggestion of equivalence of professional aspiration. First, in the earliest indenture in the museum,36 we see in 1847 (Fig. 6) the son of a dentist apprenticed to a surgeon-apothecary. Frederick Hart Jones '(a Minor) of his own free will and by and with the consent and approbation of his Father John Jones of the Borough of Cambridge in the County of Cambridge Surgeon-Dentist doth put himself Apprentice to Robert Ransom of the said Borough of Cambridge Surgeon and Apothecary to learn his Art with him'. Second, the apprenticeship of Arthur Alexander, the son of an accountant, to Alfred Matthews, Surgeon Dentist,37 has already been noted for its possible romance, but here it is the professional link which is notable, between: 'William Alexander of Liverpool in the County of Lancaster Accountant of the first part Arthur Alexander of Bradford in the County of York son of the said William Alexander of the second part and Alfred Marston Matthews of Bradford aforesaid Surgeon Dentist of the third part.'

Last, in 1887,38 the son of a Gentleman (at the time meaning not the lowest order of chivalry, but a man of independent means) was put apprentice to a dentist when 'John Brodribb Parfitt of Vellore College Road in the Borough of Reading in the County of Berks (hereinafter called the said pupil) Son of Felix Brodribb Parfitt of the same place Gentleman of his own free will and accord and by and with the consent and approbation of his father testified by his executing these presents ... put himself Pupil to Arthur Pallant of Maidenhead in the said County of Berks Dental Surgeon.'

It is not appropriate to do more than draw attention to these indentures as examples, for it seems likely that the BDA collection was made and selected for documents of particular interest, and these three may have survived for that reason. They are nevertheless instructive in showing how the apprenticeship scheme allowed movement into and between the professions, and showing quite clearly how the dental profession was seen in the nineteenth century.

This first part of the paper has examined and illustrated the particular advantages of the Apprenticeship scheme to dentistry. In the next part, the general effect of apprenticeship on the ethics and morals of young people is detailed, and the twentieth century legacy outlined.⁷'

He was 'listed as Chemist in Cambridge Market Hill in 1851, but then moved to Louth in Lincolnshire, and practised as a dentist there and in Stamford. His practice seems to have been above the Boat Inn in St Mary's Hill and for at least a year or two in later life he combined dentistry with being a publican' in 1851.⁸ He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 63 Trumpington Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, as Son of John Jones, 'Head at Chesterton', unmarried, age 22, birthplace Cambridge, and he was a Chemist.⁹ He married Georgiana Brown on 30 May 1853 at Cambridgeshire, England; and their marriage was registered in the June quarter 1853 at Chesterton Registration district. A transcript reads:

Frederick Hart Jones appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Ironmonger Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Head, married, age 32, birthplace Cambridge, and he was a Dentist. He was living with his Wife Georgiana and his Sons Frederick JG, Alfred, Frederick W, and Charles R. Also in the household was two House Servants.¹²

He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 4 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Head, age 42, birthplace Cambridgeshire, and he was given as Surgeon Dentist.¹³ He was executor of his father and The 1878 National Probate Calendar reads:

'Jones John. Personal estate under £10,000. 11 March 1878. The Will with a Codicil of John Jones late of Chesterton in the County of Cambridge Surgeon-Dentist who died 28 January 1878 at Chesterton was proved at the Principal Registry by Frederick Hart Jones and Alfred Jones of Cambridge in the County of Cambridge Gentlemen the Sons and William Aveling Gray of Ipswich in the County of Suffolk Accountant the Executors'.¹⁴ He was known to be in practice as a Dentist in 1879 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, England.¹⁵ He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 4 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Head, age 52, birthplace Cambridge, and his occupation was Dentist. The full entry reads:

He and Augustus Jones were executor to their sister Mary Ann Granger (née Jones) on 25 September 1884.¹⁶ Frederick Hart Jones married Annie Maria Beecroft in 1887 at London, England; and their marriage was registered in the March quarter 1887 at Pancras Registration district.^17,18 Frederick Hart Jones was listed at Stamford in 'Kelly's Directory of Lincolnshire, 1889' as follows:-

in 1889.¹⁹ He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 5 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Head, married, age 62, birthplace Cambridge, and he was an Employer and a Dentist. He was living with his Wife Annie. A General Domestic Servant completed the household.¹⁷

He died on 4 July 1906 at England at age 77; and his death was registered at Hackney Registration district in the September quarter 1906, at age 77.^20,21 His estate was probated on 24 November 1906; and The 1906 National Probate Calendar has the following entry:

''Frederick Hart Jones of Northumberland House Finsbury Park Middlesex died 4 July 1906 Probate London 24 November to Annie Maria Jones widow.²¹' He was the father of artist Montague Jones who made the drawings for Round About Stamford written by his son-in-law J. Clare Billing in 1921.²²

     Georgiana Brown was born circa 1830 at Dunton, Bedfordshire, England; and she was the daughter of George and Mary Brown. Her father, birthplace Bedfordshire, was a Retired Farmer in 1861 and 1871, living in Tottenham, London, and Stevenage, Hertfordshire, respectively.^1,3,4,5 She was christened on 4 September 1832 at Dunton, Bedfordshire, England.^1,6 As of 10 April 1849, her married name was Waldock.^7,8 She married Charles Waldock on 10 April 1849 at Dunton, Bedfordshire, England; and their marriage was recorded at Biggleswade Registration district in the June quarter 1849.^9,10 As of 30 May 1853, her married name was Jones.¹ Georgiana Brown married Frederick Hart Jones, son of John Jones and Mary Ann Watson, on 30 May 1853 at Cambridgeshire, England; and their marriage was registered in the June quarter 1853 at Chesterton Registration district. 'Jones Georgiana of Bridge House St. Mary Stamford Lincolnshire (wife of Frederick Hart Jones) died 28 September 1881 Administration London 16 December to Frederic John George Jones bank manager.¹⁶' She was son Montague Jones, the artist, drew the illustrations for her son-in-law J Clare Billing's book Round About Stamford in 1921.¹⁸

     Albert Sidney Jones LDS was born before 25 March 1863 at Lincolnshire, England; and his birth as Albert Sydney Jones, was recorded at Stamford Registration district in the March quarter 1863.³ He was baptized on 25 March 1863 at St Michael, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England.^4,2,5,6,7 He was the son of Frederick Hart Jones and Georgiana Brown.² Albert Sidney Jones LDS appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 4 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Sidney A Jones, Son, age 8, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and he was a Scholar.⁸ He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 4 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Sidney Albert Jones, Son, age 18, unmarried, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and he was a Dentist's Assistant.⁹

He married Ethel Godson, daughter of Godson Godson and Isabella Hunt Sanderson, on 30 October 1889 at St Martin, Stamford Barron, Northamptonshire, England; and their marriage, by Licence, was recorded in the December quarter 1889 at Stamford Registration district. He was a 26 year old Surgeon Dentist, Bachelor, of St Mary's, son of Frederick Hart Jones, Surgeon Dentist. He died on 20 July 1935 at The Firs, Easton-on-the-Hill, Northamptonshire, England; and his death was recorded at Oundle Registration district in the September quarter 1935, at age 72.^29,30 His estate was probated; and the 1935 National Probate Calendar reads: 'Jones Albert Sidney of 59 St. Martins Stamford Baron and of The Firs Easton-on-the-Hill both in Northamptonshire died 20 July 1935 at The Firs Probate London 21 November to Ethel Jones widow.³¹'

     Montague Jones was born on 1 September 1865 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, England; and his birth was recorded at Stamford Registration district in the September quarter 1865.^1,2,3 He was the son of Frederick Hart Jones and Georgiana Brown.¹ Montague Jones appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 4 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Son, age 5, birthplace Stamford, Lincoln, and he was a Scholar.⁴ He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 4 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Son, age 15, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and he was a Scholar.¹ He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at Hills Road, Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England, as Nephew [of Alfred Jones #4471], single, age 25, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and he was a Student.⁵ He was educated in 1892; He may have been the Montague Jones who, according to Venn, matriculated in 1892 as a non-collegiate student at Cambridge University.^6,7 He married Rebecca Anne Billing in 1898 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, England; and their marriage was registered in the March quarter 1898 at Stamford Registration district, Lincolnshire.^8,9 Montague Jones appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 1 Hillocks, Slough Upton St Mary, Buckinghamshire, England, as Head, married, age 33, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and he was an 'Artist (Sculp)', 'on account at home'. He was living with his Wife Rebecca.⁸

He was There is extant in the family a watercolour by him which depicts a scene of trees in leaf.¹⁰ He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Eton, Buckinghamshire, England, as Head, married, age 41, birthplace Lincolnshire, and he was an Artist.¹¹ He was the artist and illustrator of the following book written by his brother-in-law and recently described as:

'J.CLARE BILLING Round About Stamford,' Stamford, Dolby Brothers. 1921, 1 St UK. H.back, 8vo. with 40 original drawings by Montague Jones 28pp....'

In the Preface the writer 'would like, too, to express gratitude to his friend, Mr. Montague Jones, Stamford, for the delightful drawings with which the book is enriched.^{12,13,14,15,16}'


He appeared on the census of 19 June 1921 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as born at Stamford, Lincolnshire, in 1865.³ He and Rebecca Anne Billing lived on 29 September 1939 at 27 Tinwell Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England; where they were on the 1939 Register when he was described as Independant with no occupation.¹⁷ Montague Jones lived before 3 February 1948 at 27 Tinwell Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England.¹⁸ He died on 3 February 1948 at The Infirmary, Ryhall Road, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, at age 82; and his death was recorded at Stamford Registration district in the March quarter 1948.^19,18

      Her married name was Granger.² Adelaide Fellowes Jones was born on 23 December 1830 at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.³ She was the daughter of John Jones and Mary Ann Watson.¹ Adelaide Fellowes Jones was baptized on 24 June 1831 at Holy Sepulchre, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England; at 6 months, parents abode Jesus Lane, and a transcript reads:

      Sarah Ellen Maria Jones was also known as Ellen Jones.^2,3 She was born on 31 January 1827 at Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.⁴ She was the daughter of John Jones and Mary Ann Watson.¹ Sarah Ellen Maria Jones was baptized on 26 December 1827 at Holy Sepulchre, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England; at 10 months, her parents adbode was Jesus Lane, and a transcript reads:

     Alfred Jones LDS was born before 17 November 1855 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, England; and his birth was recorded at Spilsby Registration district in the December quarter 1855.^1,2,4,5 He was baptized on 17 November 1855 at St Wilfrid, Alford, Lincolnshire, England; as son of Frederic Hart Jones, Surgeon Dentist, and the family abode was Alford.⁵ He was the son of Frederick Hart Jones and Georgiana Brown.^2,1 Alfred Jones LDS appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at Ironmonger Street, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Son, age 5, birthplace Alford, Lincolnshire.⁶ He was educated; at Stamford Grammar School.⁷ He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 4 St Marys Hill, Stamford, Lincolnshire, England, as Son, age 15, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and his Occupation has been given as 'Surgeon Dentist.⁸' He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Hills Road, Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England, as Nephew [to Alfred Jones #4471], age 25, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and he was a Dentist. Alfred was in working in partnership with his uncle. Also in the house was Adelaide his cousin and prospective wife.^1,7 He married Adelaide Letitia Jones, daughter of John Jones and Emma Cropley, on 26 March 1885 at St Mary and St Michael, Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, England; and their marriage, after Banns were read, was registered in the March quarter 1885 at Chesterton Registration district. She was a 28 year old Spinster, Daughter of John Jones, Dentist. He was a 29 year old Bachelor, Dentist, and Son of Frederick Hart Jones, Dentist. They both gave their address as Trumpington House, Cambridge.^9,2,10,11 Alfred Jones LDS was a Surgeon Dentist and prior to this 'when the BDA met in Cambridge in 1885 he presided. He tried to have dental surgeons at the hospital given the same status as other surgeons, but was unsuccessful'. The following is an extract from 'The History of Addenbrook's Hospital, Cambridge':

'The Dental Department

In the early days of the Hospital, tooth extractions were the responsibility of the Apothecary, and later of the House Surgeon. Outside, extractions formed part of the routine work of surgeons but were also performed by tooth drawers, some of them itinerants who worked in the open air at fairs and markets. Others, by apprenticeship, achieved considerable skill.(1)

By the middle of the nineteenth century few general hospitals in London had yet appointed a dentist so it is interesting that as early as 1855 George Paget proposed that a Dental Department be established. He was, however, overruled by his colleagues and the question did not arise again until 1883 (2) when the proposal came in a letter from the Secretary of the Eastern Counties Dental Association (E.C.D.A.). In the interim, dentists in Britain had become an organised profession with a recognised diploma and steadily increased status.

The letter from the E.C.D.A. was to inform the Governors that 'this Association is of the opinion that it is in the interests of the public and for the efficiency of medical charitable institutions it is expected that a qualified dental surgeon should be attached to the medical staff of all general hospitals and dispensaries ……..' The matter was referred to the medical staff.

On 3 November 1886, The Weekly Meeting agreed to recommend the establishment of a dental department. It was later decided it was to be for two years in the first instance and there should be two Honorary Dentists, registered under the Dental Act (of 1878). Each should attend the Hospital for one hour once a week.

At a poll held on 7 February 1887, Mr Alfred Jones, Jr, and Mr W.A. Rhodes were elected.

Between 7 March and 30 September 1887, 723 operations in the Dental Department were recorded. In December the next year the Board recommended that the Dental Department should be definitely established and on 31 December Rhodes and Jones were elected for a period of six years.

W.A. Rhodes (1856-1918) was a Yorkshire man who came to Cambridge in 1878. In 1879 he registered under the Dental Act and in 1881 he took the L.D.S. (Ireland). He ran a very successful practice, first in Trumpington Street and then in Silver Street. He was president of the Eastern Counties Branch of, and in 1913 President of, the British Dental Association.(3)

Alfred Jones (d. 1927) had succeeded his uncle in practice at Cambridge and was himself succeeded by his son. When the British Dental Association met in Cambridge in 1885 it was under his presidency, and he was among the first dentists to use prolonged nitrous oxide anaesthesia with a nasal inhaler.

In 1894 the appointments of both Dentists were renewed for a further period of six years (4), and in 1900 Mr Rhodes decided not to seek re-election. He was elected Consulting Dentist to the Hospital instead.

Mr Jones' application for re-election was approved; however, in his letter he suggested that Honorary Dentists should be made full members of the surgical staff. The medical staff replied (5) that 'they were unanimously of the opinion that it was impossible to comply with Mr Jones' request … The qualifications they are required to possess are not such as would justify the Governors in permitting them or expecting them to share the serious responsibilities of the surgical staff.'

Staffing the Dental Department became a perennial problem after Mr Rhode's resignation. It was inevitably increased by the needs of the armed forces during the First World War, but, after 1921, as a consequence of the new Dentists' Act, the supply of dentists improved.'

Like his grandfather and uncle, he had his own house built, The Spinney, Great Shelford.⁷' He witnessed the death of Charles Richard Jones on 30 December 1890 at High Street, Dorking, Surrey, England; and his death was registered, at age 30, in the December quarter 1890 at Dorking Registration district, Surrey; occupation Banker's Clerk.^14,15 Alfred Jones LDS appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 57 Trumpington Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England, as Head, age 35, birthplace Stamford, Lincolnshire, and he was a Dentist Registered LDSL.¹⁶ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, as Head, age 45, birthplace Alford, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, and his occupation was Dentist. He was living with his wife Adelaide, daughters Gladis (sic) and Mabel, and son Bertram. Also in the household was a General Domestic Servant.¹⁷ He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at The Spinney, Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire, England, as Head, age 55, married 1885, birthplace Alford, Lincolnshire, and he was a Dentist working on his own account. The household contained his Wife, 3 children and a Servant.¹⁸ He was listed in The Medical Directory as 'L.D.S. R.C.S. I. 1881; Cons. Dent. Surg. (late Hon. Dent. Surg.) Addenb. Hosp. Camb; Mem. Brit. Dent. Assn.' in 1915 at 57 Trumpington Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.¹⁹ He was listed with his son in 'Kelly's Directory of Cambridgeshire, 1916' at Addenbroke's Hospital in Trumpington Street:

     Evelina Annie Gutteridge was born in 1895 at Essex, England; and her birth was recorded at Billericay Registration district in the June quarter 1895.¹ She was the daughter of William Gutteridge and Ann Leticia Ramm.¹ Evelina Annie Gutteridge died in 1896 at Essex, England; and her death, at age 1, was recorded at Billericay Registration district in the June quarter 1896.²

     Ruth Morgan was born in 1885 at Cheshire, England; and her birth was recorded at West Macclesfield Sub-district Macclesfield Registration district in the March quarter 1885.^1,2 She was the daughter of Henry Morgan and Esther Ann Beale.¹ Ruth Morgan died in 1890 at London, England; and her death was recorded at Wandsworth Registration district in the June quarter 1890.³

     Leonard Herbert Rickett was born in 1910 at London, England; and his birth was recorded at Greenwich Registration district in the March quarter 1910.¹ He was the son of Septimus Sidney Rickett and Ester Elizabeth Davis.¹ Leonard Herbert Rickett died in 1911 at London, England; and his death was recorded at Greenwich Registration district in the March quarter 1911.^3,2

      Her married name was Jones.¹ Rachel Miriam Abraham was born circa 1766.¹ She married Hart Jones, son of Moses Abraham Jones and Hannah Hamilberg, circa 1790.¹ Rachel Miriam Abraham died circa 1830 at England.^2,3 She was buried at King's Lynn, Norfolk, England; and recorded as 'Rachel Miriam b. Abraham wife of Levi b. Moses (probably Mrs Hart Jones).⁴'

      Samuel Aaron Jones was also known as Samuel Arrin Jones.^2,3 Samuel Aaron Jones was also known as Samuel Aaron. He was born in 1816 at Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England; [Note: Cameron Hawke-Smith writes he may have been a son or step-son of Isaiah Jones. The Charles Joseph Jones Family Tree seems to point towards Aaron Nathan as his father, but this is not definite; he is clearly known as Samuel Aaron Jones].^4,5,6 He was the son of Isaiah Jones and Esther Davis. Their marriage was also reported in the Hampshire Advertiser of 19 September 1840 where she is described as 'the youngest daughter of the late Mr Michael Emanuel Esq of Portsmouth.^6,1,10'

Samuel Aaron Jones appeared on the census of 6 June 1841 at Regent Street, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England, as age 25 and he was a Surgeon Dentist.¹¹ He was recorded as follows: 'Isaiah and his son Samuel Aaron, were active members of the Norwich synagogue.¹²' He was advertising his Dental practice in Norwich, Norfolk, in newspapers such as the Norfolk Chronicle and the Norfolk News in conjuction with his surgery at 129 Strand London between 1842 and 1855 at 79 St Giles, Norwich, Norfolk, England.^{13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20,21} He lived on 17 February 1846 at Grand Parade, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.^22,23 He had an advertisement placed in the Portsmouth Telegraph and Hampshire Advertiser of 27 March 1847 advising of his removal from Parade, Portsmouth to 31 corner of Portland Street, Southampton'. He was 'near Samuel Michael Emanuel his brother-in-law in Southampton.^24,25,26' He appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 31 Portland Street, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Head, married, age 34, birthplace Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and he was a Dentist. He was living with his Wife Maria, and their Children were recorded as Esther, Michael, Hannah and Josiah. A Nursemaid and a Housemaid completed the household.²⁷

He is reported in the Hampshire Advertiser of 13 December 1851 as having suffered a 'most destructive fire [which] broke out between 3 & 4 o'clock on Wednesday morning at 129 Strand London, the London establishment of Mr Jones surgeon dentist of Portland St, of this town. Nothing saved only the front wall left standing. The insurance will not cover half the cost.'

Mr Jones is reported in the same paper on 27 December 1851 as taking nearby premises in the Strand, London. In the 17 January 1852 edition Mr Jones is at 29 Surrey, Street, during rebuilding. By 23 October 1852 he is back at 129 The Strand.²⁸

He was a frequent advertiser in the local paper and this from the Hampshire Independent of 22 April 1863 is an example:

'Dental Surgery established 1805 Mr Jones Portland St Southampton.

'Mr Jones includes in his practice all recent improvements incidental to the profession. He appeared on the census of 7 April 1861 at 28 Portland Street, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Head, widowed, age 45, birthplace Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and he was a Dentist. He was living with his Daughters Esther and Hannah and Son Edward. Also in the household was a House Servant and an Errand Boy.³⁰

He married Matilda Hart on 26 October 1864 at City of London, London, England; and their marriage as Samuel Arrin Jones and Matilda Solomon was recorded at London City Registration district in the December quarter 1864.^5,31 Samuel Aaron Jones lived on 4 January 1865 at 3 Portland Terrace, Southampton, Hampshire, England; and this was where his daughter Esther was married and his Rank or Profession was given as Dentist.³² He appeared on the census of 2 April 1871 at 3 Portland Terrace, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Head, married, age 54, birthplace Yarmouth, Norfolk, and he was a Dentist. He was living with his Wife Matilda. There were also two Domestic Servants: a Cook and a Housemaid in the household.³³

He lived on 28 February 1872 at 3 Portland Terrace, Southampton, Hampshire, England; and this was where his daughter Annie was married.³⁴ He was given as a Dentist on the marriage record of his son Edward Newton Jones on 15 August 1876.³⁵ He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 3 Portland Terrace, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Head, married, age 65, birthplace Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, and his occupation was Surgeon Dentist. His death was reported in the Hampshire Advertiser of 3 November 1886 as 'Deeply mourned and regretted.^38,39,40,41' His estate was probated; and the 1886 National Probate Calendar records:

      Her married name was Jones.¹ Maria Emanuel was born in 1813 at England; and is described as 'of Portsmouth' and came from 'the prominent Southampton Jewish family of Emanuel.^2,1,3' She was the Daughter of Michael Emanuel (1767-1838) and Hannah Isaacs (c1772-).^4,5,6,7,8 She married Samuel Aaron Jones, son of Isaiah Jones and Esther Davis, on 16 September 1840 at Vestry Room, White's Row, Portsea, Hampshire, England; and their marriage was registered in the September quarter 1840 at Portsea Island Registration district.

Their marriage was also reported in the Hampshire Advertiser of 19 September 1840 where she is described as 'the youngest daughter of the late Mr Michael Emanuel Esq of Portsmouth.^9,1,10'

Maria Emanuel appeared on the census of 30 March 1851 at 31 Portland Street, Southampton, Hampshire, England, as Wife, age 28, birthplace Portsmouth, Hampshire, and she was a Dentist's Wife.² She died in 1859 at Hampshire, England; and her death was recorded at Southampton Registration district in the March quarter 1859.^11,12
