     John Hayes was born on 29 November 1893 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England.1,2 He was the son of Charles Hayes and Sarah Howell.1 John Hayes appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 22 Bank Street, Heath Town, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, as Son, age 7, birthplace Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.1 He died on 13 November 1916 at age 22; in the Great War during service with The Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, when he was 'killed or died as a direct result of enemy action', rank Able Seaman, official number port K.P/613, ship or unit Anson Battalion Royal Naval Division.

The Royal Naval Division Service Records 1914-1920 give his date of birth and the place '52, Stratton Street, Park Village, Wolverhampton' with 'Rank or Rating: Ordinary Seaman, Able Seaman, Northumberland Fusiliers, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.2,3,4,5' He was buried at Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, France; and his Grave reference was IV. C. 52.

'...The majority of those buried in the cemetery died on 1 July, 3 September or 13 November 1916.

'There are now 2,540 Commonwealth casualties of the First World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery. 1,335 of the graves are unidentified, but special memorials commemorate 43 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. There are also special memorials to 16 casualties know to have been buried in other cemeteries, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire.

'The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.

'The ROYAL NAVAL DIVISION MEMORIAL for the capture of Beaumont-Hamel is a stone obelisk erected beside the main road from Arras to Albert, at Beaucourt-sur-Ancre.3

     Arthur Hayes was born on 16 April 1895 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England; and his birth was recorded at Wolverhampton Registration district in the June quarter 1895.1,2,3 He was the son of Charles Hayes and Sarah Howell.1 Arthur Hayes appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 22 Bank Street, Heath Town, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, as Son, age 5, birthplace Wolverhampton, Staffordshire.1 He served in The Staffordshire Yeomanry, MCG (C), in The Great War and The National Archives contain his Territorial Force Attestation papers dated 10 February 1914 (pre-war) in which he says he is a Labourer working for Mander Bros., 18 years and 10 months old, living at 52 Stretton Street, Park Village, Wolverhampton, height 5' 6" tall. His Regimental number was 96061, rank Sergeant and is described as 'A keen hard worker and a good man with horses', he served in Egypt, Alexandria, etc., and was discharged on 26 March 1919; his medals included the 1914-1915 Bronze Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal on 10 February 1914.4 He married Sarah Ellen Foundling in 1924 at Staffordshire, England; and their marriage was recorded at Wolverhampton Registration district in the December quarter 1924.5 Arthur Hayes and Sarah Ellen Foundling lived on 29 September 1939 at Staffordshire, England; where they were on the 1939 Register in the Wolverhampton area.6 Arthur Hayes died in 1975 at Staffordshire, England; and his death was recorded at Wolverhampton Registration district in the December quarter 1975.2
