Donald Harry Howes was born on 22 April 1922 at Corton, Suffolk, England; and his birth was recorded at Mutford Registration district in the June quarter 1922.1,3 He was the son of Harry Edward Howes and Jane Aldred.1 Donald Harry Howes was baptized on 11 June 1922 at Blundeston, Suffolk, England.4 He died on 8 November 1944 at age 22; at sea on war service in a flying accident during the Second World War while serving as Chief Petty Officer (Pilot) Donald Harry Howes and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following commemorative information:

'Rank:Chief Petty Officer. Trade:Pilot. Service No:FAA/FX. 96064. Date of Death:08/11/1944. Age:22. Regiment/Service:Royal Navy H.M.S. Condor. Panel Reference: Bay 5, Panel 1. Memorial:Lee-on-Solent Memorial [Hampshire, England]. Additional Information:Son of Harry and Jane Howes'

and the following historical information:

'During the Second World War the Fleet Air Arm served in almost every theatre. In a reconnaissance role they supported land operations in France, the Netherlands, North Africa, Italy, and the Far East. Operating from aircraft carriers (seven of which were lost during the war), they were one of the chief weapons against the U-boats in the Atlantic and in support of the Russian convoys.

'In November 1940, Fleet Air Arm Swordfish biplanes carrying torpedoes undertook a night raid on the harbour at Taranto, resulting in disaster for the Italian navy. Aircraft from HMS Victorious and Ark Royal took part in the sinking of the German battleship Bismark in may 1941 and in February 1942, when the Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen attempted a daring dash along the English Channel from the Altlantic to the relative safety of the North Sea, they were attacked by Swordfish of the Fleet Air Arm.

'The principal base of the Fleet Air Arm, Lee-on-the-Solent, Hampshire, was chosen as the site for the memorial to almost 2,000 men of that service who died during the Second World War and who have no known grave'.2,5,6,7,8

He served at HMS Condor, the history of which is described as 'RNAS Arbroath was first established in 1938 as a Fleet Air Arm (FAA) facility, also known as HMS Condor, two miles north west of Arbroath, east Angus [Scotland].

'The Condor Barracks date from about 1940, with HMS Condor being used as No 2 Observers School, a Deck Landing Training (DLT) School, and a Naval Air Signals School during World War II. From the first construction on the farmland to the landing of the first aircraft took only six months. In October 1940 the airfield suffered an attack by Luftwaffe Heinkel and Dornier bombers operating from Norway. That raid had seen attacks on other airfields and installations along the east coast of Scotland, including RAF Montrose. A few bombs were dropped and a small amount of damage, reputed to be about £6,000, was caused. Throughout the war period the airfield and it's facilities were used by visiting Naval Air Squadrons as a home base, usually whilst their home carriers were berthed in the Firth of Forth or the Clyde. The nearby airfield at East Haven HMS Peewit was used as an additional site for DLT.9,10,11'

His estate was probated on 26 April 1945; and he was 'of 34 Hilary-avenue Plumstead-road Norwich' Norfolk. Administration was granted to 'Jane Howes widow' and Mother.12

'Historical Information
During the First World War, Commonwealth camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen. A base supply depot and the 3rd Echelon of General Headquarters were also established in the city.

'Almost all of the hospitals at Rouen remained there for practically the whole of the war. They included eight general, five stationary, one British Red Cross and one labour hospital, and No. 2 Convalescent Depot. A number of the dead from these hospitals were buried in other cemeteries, but the great majority were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever. In September 1916, it was found necessary to begin an extension, where the last burial took place in April 1920.

'During the Second World War, Rouen was again a hospital centre and the extension was used once more for the burial of Commonwealth servicemen, many of whom died as prisoners of war during the German occupation.

'The cemetery extension contains 8,346 Commonwealth burials of the First World War (ten of them unidentified) and in Block "S" there are 328 from the Second World War (18 of them unidentified). There are also 8 Foreign National burials here.

'The extension was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.5'
