      Julius Abraham Gouldstein was also known as Julius Gould.3 He was born circa 1857 at Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.4,5,6 He appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 50 Minories, Aldgate, London, England, as Julius Goldstein, Lodger of Emma Leonard, Housekeeper (Retired), age 26, birthplace Sydney, Australia, and he was a Journalist and Private Tutor.7 He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 38 Milner Square, Islington, London, England, as Julius Goldstein, Lodger of Fanny Simmons, Boarding House Keeper, age 33, birthplace Australia, and he was a Jewish Minister.8 He was recorded by Charles Booth, philanthropist and social reformer (1840-1916) in his Survey notebook B197. pp 60-73 and itemised as 'Interview with Reverend J. A. Gouldstein, 38 Milner Square, minister of North London Synagogue, John Street. Contains report of North London Synagogue 1896, 13 December 1897'. This was in probably connection with Booth's survey Life and Labour of the People in London 2nd ed. in nine volumes published 1892-1897, which was expanded to 17 volumes 1902-3.9,10

He married Lillie Emanuel, daughter of George Joseph Emanuel and Elizabeth Hyman, in 1899 at Lancashire, England; and their marriage was recorded at Birmingham Registration district in the March quarter 1899.1,3 Julius Abraham Gouldstein had the following sermon published by Wertheimer, Lea & Co. (London) in 1901: 'A sermon by the Minister, Rev. Julius A. Gouldstein, on the occasion of the memorial service held in memory of Her Late Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria, Saturday evening, February 2nd, 1901 [at the North London Synagogue]. by Julius A. Goldstein.11 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 33 Calabria Road, Islington, London, England, as Julius Goldstein, Head, married, age 43, birthplace Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, and he was a Jewish Minister of Religion. His household consisted of his Wife, Son, Daughter, General Domestic and Nurse.5 He died on 14 November 1902 at London, England; and his death was recorded at Marylebone Registration district in the December quarter 1902.4,2 He was the subject of an obituary in The Jewish Chronicle where he was described, in an extensive item titled 'Tragic Death of the Rev. Julius A. Gouldstein' which included a portrait, as '...the highly esteemed Minister of the North London Synagogue' whose death 'took place under particularly sad circumstances on Friday night...' on 21 November 1902.2 His estate was probated; and The 1902 National Probate Calendar records that Julius Abraham Gouldstein of '33 Calarbria Road Highbury Middlesex minister-of-religion died 14th November 1902 at St. Mary's-hospital Paddington Middlesex Administration London 23 December to Lillie Gouldstein widow.12'
