Stoker Petty Officer A.C. Graham
Panel 41, Column 2.
Albert Charles Graham was born on 2 October 1906 at Hampshire, England; and his birth was recorded at Portsmouth Registration district in the December quarter 1906.2,3 He was the Son of Harry Graham and Mary Ann Harriet Stockman.4,5 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 37 Stamshaw Road, Stamshaw, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England, as Son, age 4, birthplace Portsmouth.6 He married Margery Ruby Cham, daughter of Edgar Cham and Millicent Ruth Reed, in 1931 at Hampshire, England; and their marriage was recorded at Portsmouth Registration district in the June quarter 1931.1 Albert Charles Graham was awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good conduct Medal on HMS Proserpine, which was 'a shore naval base at Lyness in Orkney used by Scapa Flow in World War II.' in July 1940.7 He died on 14 December 1940 at age 34; during the Second World War and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following information:-

'Rank: Petty Officer Stoker. Service No:P/K 66286. Date of Death:14/12/1940. Age:34. Regiment/Service:Royal Navy, Ship Branlebas. Panel Reference: Panel 41, Column 2. Memorial:PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL. Additional Information: Husband of Marjorie R. Graham, of Bowcombe, Isle of Wight.'

According to wrecksite website accounts: 'The French torpedo boat Branlebas was one of the units of the French Navy which adhered to General de Gaulle´s Free French force after the capitulation in June 1940. The vessel was manned by a mixed French and British crew and came under the orders of the British Navy...'

'Branlebas left Dartmouth around 1800 hours on 13th Dec. 1940. She was charged with escorting a west bound convoy. Her poor sea going qualities meant she could not keep pace with the convoy in rough weather and she lost contact. At 0900 hours on the 14th Dec a heavy head sea caused her to break her back at the after end of the engine room. The stern section separated, turned over and sank immediately. Only three sailors survived and they were picked up from a life raft four days later...Branlebas was unpopular with her crew. There were rats on board and she made a lot of smoke. She was not built for the type of conditions encountered that night and many of the crew had a bad feeling about the trip. The Admiralty loss position puts her 25 miles SSW Eddystone but she is likely to be further down than that having spent 15 hours at sea. Plymouth divers are currently investigating wrecks in the area and hope eventually to find her. Read more at wrecksite: https://www.wrecksite.eu/wreck.aspx?133666.8,9,3,10'

He was the subject of an obituary in the Isle of Wight County Press of 4 January 1941: 'Killed. News has been received that Stoker Petty Officer Albert Charles Graham, of The Hays Dairy, Bowcombe, was lost at sea on December 14th. A native of Portsmouth, Petty Officer Graham was well known in the Carisbrooke district, where much regret will be felt. He had been in the Navy for 16 years.11'

He was commemorated where he was 'associated with' but not individually recorded on the memorial at Carisbrook Parish War Memorial, St Mary's Churchyard, Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England.12,13 He was commemorated with Historical Information from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission: 'After the First World War, an appropriate way had to be found of commemorating those members of the Royal Navy who had no known grave, the majority of deaths having occurred at sea where no permanent memorial could be provided.

'An Admiralty committee recommended that the three manning ports in Great Britain - Chatham, Plymouth and Portsmouth - should each have an identical memorial of unmistakable naval form, an obelisk, which would serve as a leading mark for shipping. The memorials were designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, who had already carried out a considerable amount of work for the Commission, with sculpture by Henry Poole. The Portsmouth Naval Memorial was unveiled by the Duke of York (the future George VI) on 15 October 1924.

'After the Second World War it was decided that the naval memorials should be extended to provide space for commemorating the naval dead without graves of that war, but since the three sites were dissimilar, a different architectural treatment was required for each. The architect for the Second World War extension at Portsmouth was Sir Edward Maufe (who also designed the Air Forces memorial at Runnymede) and the additional sculpture was by Charles Wheeler, William McMillan, and Esmond Burton. The Extension was unveiled by the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother on 29 April 1953.

'Portsmouth Naval Memorial commemorates around 10,000 sailors of the First World War and almost 15,000 of the Second World War.' at Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Portsmouth, Hampshire, England.14,15
