     Frank Frederick Ward was born in 1921 at Essex, England; and his birth was recorded in the September quarter 1921 at Romford Registration district.^4,6 He was the son of Ernest Charles Ward and Bessie Norrington.^4,2,5 Frank Frederick Ward was engaged to be married to Molly.⁷

He began military service before 14 July 1943 and became Sergeant 1321748, 35 Sqdn., Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.² He died on 14 July 1943; when he was 'Killed in action with The RAF' during World War II aged 21 years.^4,2,8 He has 'No known grave.²' He was commemorated in Panel 168. 'The Memorial overlooks the River Thames on Cooper's Hill at Englefield Green between Windsor and Egham on the A308, 4 miles from Windsor.' The Air Forces Memorial 'commemorates by name over 20,000 airmen who were lost in the Second World War during operations from bases in the United Kingdom and North and Western Europe, and who have no known graves'. 'They served in Bomber, Fighter, Coastal, Transport, Flying Training and Maintenance Commands, and came from all parts of the Commonwealth. Some were from countries in continental Europe which had been overrun but whose airmen continued to fight in the ranks of the Royal Air Force. The memorial was designed by Sir Edward Maufe with sculpture by Vernon Hill. The engraved glass and painted ceilings were designed by John Hutton and the poem engraved on the gallery window was written by Paul H Scott. No. of Identified Casualties: 20331.' Frank is also commemorated in the Commonwealth War Graves Debt of Honour Register: 'Remembered with Honour' at Runnymede Memorial, Runnymede, Egham, Surrey, England.^9,10

Lab.⁷ He was enlisted in British Army, 51 & 52/60 Rifles, Regimental number 908, at age 19, birthplace St Mary's, Lincolnshire in 1876.⁸ He married Mary Ann Benham, daughter of George Benham and Ruth Ledger, between July 1881 and September 1881 at Hampshire, England; and their marriage was recorded at Winchester Registration district in the September quarter 1881 and indexed as Mary Ann Benham and John Horton.⁹ John Wells Horton appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at 6 Mill Row, St Nicholas Parish, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, as Head, married, age 33, birthplace Horncastle, Lincolnshire, and he was a General Labourer.¹ He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 6 Sutton Street, Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England, as Head, married, age 44, birthplace Horncastle, Lincolnshire, and he worked as an Engine Driver (Fixture).¹⁰ He died before 18 December 1919 at Lincolnshire, England; and his death was recorded at Lincoln Registration district in the December quarter 1919 as John Horton.^11,12 He was buried on 18 December 1919 at Lincolnshire, England.¹²

      Her married name was Shimizu.² Audrey Bernice Norrington was born on 4 July 1933 at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada.^2,1,3 She was the daughter of Arthur Victor Norrington and Margaret Helen Green.¹ Audrey Bernice Norrington appeared in 'The Norrington Newsletter', written after 1978, which contains the following information:

     'After early schooling, worked in her spare time and thereby attended and graduated from the Ontario College of Art. Her art work has continued after a short assignment with the Canada Broadcasting Corp. and also after her subsequent marriage to Dr A. Shimizu. Audrey has two daughters...With her husband her travel has been reasonably extensive involving brief periods in husband's post graduate work, in Montreal, England, Ireland and Cleveland Ohio. Since then they have enjoyed many visits to many other corners of the globe.

     'The Shimizu family presently resides in Hamilton, Ontario, where husband Arthur heads the phrenology department at the St Josephs Hospital in the city. Audrey actively pursues her art interests and activities.³'

She was mentioned in the following notice for a Burlington Art Centre exhibition:

     'This exhibition examines the spiritual nature of the relationships between four regional women artists and trees. She was listed with Members, Friends and Neighbours of Hamilton Artists Inc. 'Hamilton Artists Inc. is committed to the presentation, dissemination and support of contemporary visual arts practice in Canada.⁶'

She died on 26 March 2004 at St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, at age 70.^7,8,9 A transcript of her obituray notice in 'The Toronto Star' of 28 March 2004 reads as follows:

'Audrey SHIMIZU, artist, lover of music, literature, nature, the trees and the environment passed away March 26, 2004.¹⁰'

She was commemorated in The Niagara Community Foundation Communiqué of September 2005 which contains the following item:

     'Audrey Shimizu was devoted to her family and to the study and practice of visual art. She was an energetic member of the Side-by-Each collective, a group of Niagara women artists, as well as the Niagara Artists’ Company. Her artistic preoccupations included gender and women’s issues, social and humanist concerns and the environment. In particular, she drew great inspiration from trees. In her explorations of this subject she recognized the complexity of our relationship with nature and that we are at once apart from it and one with it. Always up for a conversation about art, Audrey enjoyed an exchange of ideas and was often a tough critic, though she was never harder on herself. Invariably warm, gentle and understanding, Audrey’s character and awareness were reflected in her socially-minded activities, a trait shared with her husband Arthur, ‘Art’. She also shared with Art a profound appreciation of arts and culture and recognized their capability as enduring legacies. The Audrey Shimizu Memorial Fund was created to support the payment of exhibition fees to women artists showing at the Niagara Artists’ Company' in September 2005.⁷

     Harold Victor Norrington was born on 15 December 1940 at Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada.^1,2 He was auburn haired.³ He was the son of Arthur Victor Norrington and Margaret Helen Green.¹ Harold Victor Norrington was included in the 'Norrington Family Newsletter Number 8, Spring issue 1978, more family anecdotes and information' as follows:

'Harold, showing an early aptitude in the field of art also graduated from the Ontario College of Art. In his early years of schooling he chose to work part time in the Artic, spending several summers at Frobisher Bay on Baffin Island. It was here that Harold developed quite an interest in Eskimo Sculpture. As a result of his training, much of his time has been devoted to teaching. At the same time he has produced many fine examples of his particular form of art expression. His hobbies seem to be principally travel and classical music. He now works with the Ontario Government in the Ministry of Culture and Recreation, and resides in Toronto.²'

He died on 6 April 1993 at St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, at age 52.¹ He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Toronto, York, Ontario, Canada.^1,4

      Her married name was Dann.¹ Joyce Bearpark was born on 26 May 1944 at Essex, England; and her birth was recorded at Romford Registration district in the June quarter 1944.      Sidney Donald James Flynn was born on 6 April 1916 at Surrey, England; and his birth was recorded at Richmond Surrey record office in the June quarter 1916.^1,2 He was the son of Daniel Flynn and Annie Martha Daburn.¹ Sidney Donald James Flynn married Phyllis May Anna Elgar in 1941 at Surrey, England; and their marriage was recorded at Surrey North Eastern Registration office in the March quarter 1941.³ Sidney Donald James Flynn died in June 2005 at London, England, at age 89; and his death was recorded at Hounslow Registration office in June 2005.²

     Leslie George Flynn was born on 3 April 1918 at Surrey, England; and his birth was recorded at Richmond Surrey record office in the June quarter 1918.^1,2 He was the son of Daniel Flynn and Annie Martha Daburn.¹

     Bernard G Beatty was born in 1938; and his birth was recorded at Chester record office in the June quarter 1938.¹ He was the son of Joseph Beatty and Agnes Margaret Hilda Slyfield.¹

     Rosaline Martha Flynn was born in 1920 at Surrey, England; and her birth was recorded at Richmond Surrey record office in the June quarter 1920.¹ She was the daughter of Daniel Flynn and Annie Martha Daburn.¹ Rosaline Martha Flynn died in 1942 at Surrey, England; and her death was recorded at Surrey SW registration office in the December quarter 1942.²

     Hyman Cohen was born circa 1913 at England. He married Lilian Myer, daughter of Sydney Myer and Julia Voss, in 1935 at Hope Place Synagogue, Liverpool, Lancashire, England; and their marriage was recorded at Liverpool S.       Henry James Taylor also went by the name of Harry Taylor.² He was born on 17 September 1881 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England; and his parents were William Taylor, who was a Brass Dress[er?] in 1891, and Harriet Kirk.³ He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, as Henry Taylor, Son, age 9, birthplace Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, and he was a Scholar; living with his parents and five brothers and sisters.⁴ He married Ann Maria Howell, daughter of John Howell and Jane Styche, on 24 April 1909 at Staffordshire, England; and their marriage was recorded in the June quarter 1909 at Wolverhampton Registration district.⁵ Henry James Taylor appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 12 Ward Street, Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, as Boarder, married, age 29, birthplace Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, and he was a Plate Layer's Labourer, Railway Co.⁶

He died on 16 May 1915 at France at age 33; in action during the Great War [WWI]. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following information on Harry Taylor:

'Location Information: Le Touret Memorial is located at the east end of Le Touret Military Cemetery, on the south side of the Bethune-Armentieres main road.

'From Bethune follow the signs for Armentieres until you are on the D171. Continue on this road through Essars and Le Touret village. Approximately 1 kilometre after Le Touret village and about 5 kilometres before you reach the intersection with the D947, Estaires to La Bassee road, the Cemetery lies on the right hand side of the road.

'The Memorial takes the form of a loggia surrounding an open rectangular court. The court is enclosed by three solid walls and on the eastern side by a colonnade. East of the colonnade is a wall and the colonnade and wall are prolonged northwards (to the road) and southwards, forming a long gallery. Small pavilions mark the ends of the gallery and the western corners of the court.

'The Le Touret Memorial commemorates over 13,400 British soldiers who were killed in this sector of the Western Front from the beginning of October 1914 to the eve of the Battle of Loos in late September 1915 and who have no known grave. The Memorial takes the form of a loggia surrounding an open rectangular court. The names of those commemorated are listed on panels set into the walls of the court and the gallery, arranged by regiment, rank and alphabetically by surname within the rank. The memorial was designed by John Reginald Truelove, who had served as an officer with the London Regiment during the war, and unveiled by the British ambassador to France, Lord Tyrrell, on 22 March 1930.

'Almost all of the men commemorated on the Memorial served with regular or territorial regiments from across the United Kingdom and were killed in actions that took place along a section of the front line that stretched from Estaires in the north to Grenay in the south. This part of the Western Front was the scene of some of the heaviest fighting of the first year of the war, including the battles of La Bassée (10 October – 2 November 1914), Neuve Chapelle (10 – 12 March 1915), Aubers Ridge (9 – 10 May 1915), and Festubert (15 – 25 May 1915). Soldiers serving with Indian and Canadian units who were killed in this sector in 1914 and ’15 whose remains were never identified are commemorated on the Neuve Chapelle and Vimy memorials, while those who fell during the northern pincer attack at the Battle of Aubers Ridge are commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial.


'The British Expeditionary Force in French Flanders, 1914 - 1915

'In October 1914, II Corps of the British Expeditionary Force moved north from Picardy and took up positions in French Flanders where they were immediately engaged in the series of attacks and counter attacks that would become known as the ‘race to the sea’. Over the course of the next year most of the British activity in this sector focused on attempting to dislodge the German forces from their advantageous position on the Aubers Ridge and capture the city of Lille, a major industrial and transport centre which the Germans had occupied early in the war. The ridge is a slight incline in an otherwise extremely flat landscape from which the Germans were able to observe and bombard the British lines. Following the British capture of the village of Neuve Chapelle in March 1915, the Germans greatly strengthened their defences along the ridge, reinforcing their positions with thick barbed wire entanglements, concrete blockhouses and machine gun emplacements. These extra defences frustrated British attempts to break through enemy lines and led to very heavy casualties at the battles of Aubers Ridge and Festubert in May 1915.


'Le Touret Military Cemetery

'The men of the Indian Corps began burying their fallen comrades at this site in November 1914 and the cemetery was used continually by field ambulances and fighting units until the German spring offensive began in March 1918. Richebourg L’Avoue was overrun by the German forces in April 1918, but the cemetery was used again in September and October after this territory was recaptured by the Allies. Today over 900 Commonwealth servicemen who were killed during the First World War are buried here.'

      Edward Daborn was also known as Edward Daburn.¹ He was born on 23 June 1914; and his birth was recorded at Dartford record office in the September quarter 1914 as Edward Daburn.^1,2 He was the son of Percy John Daborn and Jessie Violet Cooper.¹ Edward Daborn married Irene Mathias in 1935; and their marriage was recorded at Dartford record office in the December quarter 1935.³ Edward Daborn died in September 1984 at Kent, England, at age 70; and his death was recorded at Bexley Registration office in September 1984.²

      Her married name was Ibbett.¹ Mabel Pell was born on 7 November 1890 at London, England; and her birth was recorded at Northampton registration office in the December quarter 1892.² She married Arthur Charles Ibbett, son of Alfred John Ibbett and Charlotte Mant, on 6 January 1918 at Christ Church, Rotherhithe, Southwark, London, England; and their marriage was recorded at St Olave record office in the March quarter 1918.^1,3 Mabel Pell died on 7 September 1960 at 90 South Park Crecent, Hither Green, London, England, at age 69; and her death was recorded at Lewisham registration office in the September quarter 1960.^4,5

     Francis George Ernest Perry was born on 13 January 1889; and his birth was recorded at St Olave registration office in the March quarter 1889.^2,3 He was baptized on 29 June 1890 at St Anne, Bermondsey, London, England.⁴ He married Ada Harriet Ibbett, daughter of Alfred John Ibbett and Charlotte Mant, on 22 December 1912 at St James, Bermondsey, London, England; and their marriage was recorded at St Olave record office in the December quarter 1912.^1,5 Francis George Ernest Perry died in 1973 at Cornwall, England; and his death was recorded at Liskeard registration office in the March quarter 1973.²
