1942
Her married name was Orders.2 Hilda Lilian Netten was born in 1894 at Porchfield, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England; and her birth was registered in the March quarter 1894 at Calbourne Isle of Wight Registration district.1,3,4,5 She was the daughter of Robert Richard Netten and Kathleen Elizabeth Dredge.1 Hilda Lilian Netten appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Ningwood, Shalfleet, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England, as Daughter, age 7, birthplace Porchfield, Isle of Wight.1 She appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Manor Farm, Niton, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England, as Lilian Hylda Netten, age 18, birthplace Wellow, Isle of Wight, and she was a General Domestic Servant in the household of Alfred Hearn, Farmer and Grazier.6 She married William Arthur Orders in 1915 at Register Office, Newport, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England; and their marriage was recorded at Isle of Wight Registration district, in the June quarter 1915.2,7 Hilda Lilian Netten and William Arthur Orders lived in 1929 at 33 Oak Grove, Stretford, Lancashire, England.8 Hilda Lilian Netten died on 5 May 1942 at Hampshire, England; and her death was recorded as 'Colson/Orders, Hilda Lilian' at Isle of Wight Registration district in the June quarter 1942. She died during the Second World War as a Civilian and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission provide the following information:

'Rank:Civilian. Date of Death:05/05/1942. Age:48. Regiment/Service:Civilian War Dead. Reporting Authority:Cowes, Urban District. Additional Information:of 1 Cambridge Villas, Cambridge Road. Daughter of R. R. Netten, of General Stores, Wellow, Yarmouth, and of the late K. E. Netten; widow of A. Orders. Injured at 1 Cambridge Villas; died same day at East Cowes Hospital'.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: 'ORP Blyskawica is a Grom-class destroyer which served in the Polish Navy during World War II and is the only ship of the Polish Navy awarded the Virtuti Militari medal. It is preserved as a museum ship in Gdynia, and is the oldest preserved destroyer in the world.

'On the night of 4–5 May 1942, Blyskawica was instrumental in defending the Isle of Wight town of Cowes from an air raid by 160 German bombers. The ship was undergoing an emergency refit at the J. Samuel White yard where she was built and, on the night of the raid, fired repeated rounds at the German bombers from outside the harbour, her guns becoming so hot they had to be doused with water. Extra ammunition had to be ferried over from Portsmouth. This forced the bombers to stay high, making it hard for them to target properly. The ship also laid down a smokescreen hiding Cowes from sight. While the town and the shipyard were badly damaged, it is generally thought[citation needed] that without this defensive action, it would have been far worse...'.9,10,11,12

She was buried after 5 May 1942 at East Cowes Cemetery, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England; as Hilda Colson.13 She was commemorated according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as follows: 'Of the many civilians of the Commonwealth whose deaths were due to enemy action in the 1939-1945 War, the names of some 67,092 are commemorated in the Civilian War Dead Roll of Honour, located near St. George's Chapel in Westminster Abbey, London.11,14,15' She was commemorated at East Cowes (Kingston) Civilian Cemetery, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, England.16

Percy Skeet was born in 1890 at Woking, Surrey, England; and his birth was recorded at Guildford record office in the March quarter 1890.1,2 He was the son of Arthur Skeet and Caroline Pryke.1 Percy Skeet appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at Woking, Surrey, England.1 He appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, as Son, age 11, birthplace Woking, Surrey.3 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England, as age 21.4 He died on 23 July 1916 at France; and The Commonwealth War Graves Commission give the following information :-

'Name: SKEET, PERCY. Initials: P. Nationality: United Kingdom. Rank: Private. Regiment/Service: Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. Unit Text: 1st/1st Bucks Bn. Date of Death: 23/07/1916 Service No: 266355 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Pier and Face 10 A and 10 D. Memorial: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

'Cemetery: THIEPVAL MEMORIAL Country: France Locality: Somme Visiting Information: The Panel numbers (or Pier and Face) quoted at the end of each entry relate to the panels dedicated to the Regiment served with. In some instances where a casualty is recorded as attached to another Regiment, his name may alternatively appear within their Regimental Panel (or Pier and Face). Please refer to the on-site Memorial Register Introduction to determine the alternative panel numbers (or Pier and Face) if you do not find the name within the quoted Panels (or Pier and Face). Location Information: The Thiepval Memorial will be found on the D73, next to the village of Thiepval, off the main Bapaume to Albert road (D929). Each year a major ceremony is held at the memorial on 1 July. Historical Information: On 1 July 1916, supported by a French attack to the south, thirteen divisions of Commonwealth forces launched an offensive on a line from north of Gommecourt to Maricourt. Despite a preliminary bombardment lasting seven days, the German defences were barely touched and the attack met unexpectedly fierce resistance. Losses were catastrophic and with only minimal advances on the southern flank, the initial attack was a failure. In the following weeks, huge resources of manpower and equipment were deployed in an attempt to exploit the modest successes of the first day. However, the German Army resisted tenaciously and repeated attacks and counter attacks meant a major battle for every village, copse and farmhouse gained. At the end of September, Thiepval was finally captured. The village had been an original objective of 1 July. Attacks north and east continued throughout October and into November in increasingly difficult weather conditions. The Battle of the Somme finally ended on 18 November with the onset of winter. In the spring of 1917, the German forces fell back to their newly prepared defences, the Hindenburg Line, and there were no further significant engagements in the Somme sector until the Germans mounted their major offensive in March 1918. The Thiepval Memorial, the Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, bears the names of more than 72,000 officers and men of the United Kingdom and South African forces who died in the Somme sector before 20 March 1918 and have no known grave. Over 90% of those commemorated died between July and November 1916. The memorial also serves as an Anglo-French Battle Memorial in recognition of the joint nature of the 1916 offensive and a small cemetery containing equal numbers of Commonwealth and French graves lies at the foot of the memorial. The memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, was built between 1928 and 1932 and unveiled by the Prince of Wales, in the presence of the President of France, on 1 August 1932 (originally it had been scheduled for 16 May, but due to the sudden death of French President Doumer, as a mark of respect, the ceremony was postponed until August). The dead of other Commonwealth countries, who died on the Somme and have no known graves, are commemorated on national memorials elsewhere. No. of Identified Casualties: 72096.5'
