'Mrs Judy Caller, wife of the physician, Dr Martin Caller, and eldest daughter of Nora Lane, who was Colonel Halford's daughter by his first wife, remembers that her grandfather's great friend and confidant [J.P. Mitchelhill] was very particular about his cigars and kept them in a magnificent air-conditioned chest.

"He always seemed to be an immensely busy man, with a huge desk in a huge room in Queen Street, Mayfair; he was always smoking a cigar with ash falling everywhere.

"When I was nursing I used to go and see him at Montpelier House and Mrs Mitchelhill—then Miss Sutherland—who was a highly-trained nurse and sister tutor, used to help me with the bandaging etc. that I had to learn, and J.P. was a very willing patient to be practised on. He was very athletic well beyond the age of seventy, and we always used to play deck quoits on a proper court.

"He gave me a lovely silver teapot for my wedding present—in fact he gave me a cheque; I told him there was a pound or two left over and he said 'that was to buy the tea to put in it'!' (page 67-68).2,8

"Appreciation goes to Mrs Alice Everard and Mrs Judy Caller (granddaughters), Mrs Nora Lane and other members of the family of the late Colonel Halford;" (page 10)

‘Alice Everard, granddaughter of The Colonel, recalls her grandfather’s friend:

‘He always seemed physically old to me. But he was always young at heart. We used to have a lot of jokes always. He knew how to talk to me at my level. I was only thirteen when I first knew him, but I can still remember the conversations we had, so he must have been able to reach me. The letters that he used to write to me were very affectionate and always contained advice. He believed very strongly in getting his values over to me —that he was here to tell me what he knew from his experience, to help me. It wasn’t patronising at all, it was only helpful. I do remember some of the things he said ‘just off the cuff’. They were always very honest and very straight and non-hypocritical. He said that you should treat people as you would like to be treated. He was very kind to me.

‘He was very proud of his garden and he had this marvellous lawn. It was like a bowling green, there wasn’t a weed. One day he said I could help him in the garden; he had a wheelbarrow full of earth which he said I could push up to the end. I started pushing it, but as I got half-way up, I dropped the whole lot of it onto his beautiful lawn; I didn’t dare look at him or at it. I didn’t know quite what to do. He came towards me and saw what I’d done; I took a deep breath and waited —and he laughed. He said: ‘Never mind about that’, and it was marvellous because it was his most treasured lawn. He might have been really cross but he wasn’t. He was very gentle and very funny about it and teased me about it afterwards, saying: ‘When you want Alice to push wheelbarrows up just make sure she topples it over; when you want a compost heap just ask Alice to make it.- He thought it was hilarious. He was very tolerant in that way.

‘I knew him better than knew The Colonel; I didn’t know either of my grandfathers, as they had both died. J.P. used to encourage me to ask boyfriends back to stay, after the theatre and that sort of thing. He loved me to have my own friends and he used to take me to the pantomime with girls from school—he always included my friends. He was never possessive e about a relationship, and never patronised children. He spoke like an equal. He used to stop and say: ‘Now what shall we do about this?’ and we’d both talk about it and he’d say, ‘I think that’s a good idea of yours.’ He’d involve you in what he was doing, but at your level. I was at a very awkward age; when you’re fourteen or fifteen you feel misunderstood. I think J.P. filled the void for me at that time: I never felt when I was there that I was misunderstood. He was always welcoming and kind.

‘My family has an island in Blackwater, where Sir Norman Angell* lived. J.P. used to come down there, and the first time he met Sir Norman he talked for some time to the distinguished prophet. After about half an hour J.P. punched him in the ribs and said: ‘You ought to write a book, you know!’ Norman Angell was humble and said: ‘I think I ought to.’ To this day I don’t know whether J.P. knew that the other was already an author of repute.

‘J.P. wrote well, also. He had a spidery writing; it was a real clerk’s hand in a way, a sort of flourish, with such a thin nib. It was a Dickensian hand; you felt it was a little chap out in the office doing this marvellous copperplate. I think my mother still has some account books my grandfather had, and they are similar. Everything is written out in longhand, every detail is put in, and with the accuracy and the figures—it’s beautiful.

‘I can well believe that The Colonel would have been the person to have given J.P., in his less palmy days, a chance. I can see this quality in my mother. She respects business acumen, whoever you are, and if you can help somebody she feels very strongly that you should; just to give them that helping hand to get them going. She takes after The Colonel. Certainly J.P.’s devotion for the Halford family, because of his friendship with The Colonel, was continued down the years. It wasn’t just a business relationship; he became part of the family he embraced. It was as though this was a sublimation for the fact that he didn’t have children himself. He treated me, and all his other young friends, as if we were his grandchildren.

‘I was very involved with J.P.’s office because of Miss Peacock, who was a secretary in it, used to meet me from school every term at Victoria (I went away to school at the age of eight). It was right at the end of the war and I lived in Lincolnshire, so she used to meet me at Victoria and take me across London, give me fish and chips at King’s Cross and put me on the train to Spalding. And the same in reverse when I went back to school. My mother had known the office since she was a child, and when I went to London the one place I would have gone was to Clarges Street. Because it was my sort-of base in London. And there was Walker. It was Miss Peacock I knew very well: she became Mrs Anderson. She wasn’t particularly friendly or anything, but she was reliable. She was always there; somehow she was the symbol of the holidays to me because I disliked school intensely. She was a great friend of The Colonel’s. Her loyalty as his secretary was the link. And Walker looked like a walrus with a droopy moustache. He was like one of those Galsworthian clerks: a real Victorian. The whole office was run on Victorian lines. They all had their different little rooms according to their status. The rooms got bigger and bigger as you got higher up.

‘He had clocks all over the office, and at Montpelier House. I remember staying there and all night they chimed. It was terrible. He once told me how many he had and how he wound them up on Sundays.

‘When I stayed at Monteplier House—I used to go back at weekends—he was always very thoughtful because he knew I didn’t have much pocket-money and he used to ask me if I had enough money; he always made it clear to me that when I bought my ticket it must never be half-fare—I was sixteen by this time—I must never cheat the railway. He was a man of high principle, and he thought I should remember these principles and carry them out in my life just as he had done. He would always ask me what I thought. Could I give my opinion and did I think I was fair, and he would never have overridden me. If he said he thought something should be done he would always tell me why. He was never dictatorial at all, but was a very reasonable man. When one is sixteen one responds very much to this sort of attitude because one feels one is being treated like and adult. There was a mutual respect.

‘Altogether there seems to be a wealth of affection for J.P. from some people and less respect from others; there doesn’t seem to be any happy medium about him…….’

'*Sir Norman Angell, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and a prince of expositors; a type of mind rare in English literature, reminiscent at its best of the great encyclopedists of eighteenth-century France.' (page 64-67).6,7

'I am sure most of you will have come
in contact with Richard Henry Myer
at some time during his time with
ESDA. It is with regret that we are
informing you of his sad death. He
was one of our stalwart volunteers.
Dick was Chair of ESDA, a Vice
President, a Director and Chair of the
Lewes District Committee for many
years.
He came to ESDA during the early
1980’s and from that moment on he
worked tirelessly with and for disabled
people and expected nothing less
from all those involved with ESDA.
Without Dick’s involvement ESDA
would not be what it is today, we owe
him a great debt of gratitude. His
sound advice and commitment will be
sorely missed.' on 28 March 2008.12 His estate was probated on 12 June 2008; at Winchester Registry, Hampshire, England.13
