THE INQUEST
An extremely sad fatality occurred on Friday in connection with a cross county race from Dover. Whilst the runners - a party of Inniskilling Fusiliers - were near the rifle range at Aycliffe, Lce.-Corpl. McConnell, after running for five minutes after an extra spurt from a quick pace, fell out, telling a comrade that he was going to rest, but that he was all right. At the finish of the run McConnell was found to be missing, and his comrades, becoming anxious, sent out a search party, who found him in an unconscious condition. Artificial respiration was applied, and also all the way to the hospital, but without success, deceased not regaining consciousness at any time.
The inquest was held at the Esplanade Hotel on Monday by Mr. S. Payn (Borough Coroner). Mr. J. Hogben was chosen foreman of the jury, who, having viewed the body at the mortuary, heard the following evidence.
Sergt. James Daly, 2nd Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, part of which battalion is stationed at Fort Burgoyne, Dover, said: Deceased, Carleton McConnell was a Lance- Corp. in my Company - "A" Company. He was nearly 22 years of age, and enlisted in September 1910. About 2.20 p.m. on Friday he formed one of a party of five of us, who came down to the South Front to join others in a run. We marched down, and after a rest, dressed for a cross county run. We commenced about 3.30 p.m. Dinner was served at 12.45, and deceased had nothing after. There were ten of us running. We went along the Old Folkestone Road, starting off at a good pace, which we kept up for about two or three miles. I, being the oldest runner, dropped back to look after the younger ones. I waited until they were all up but deceased, and Bandsman Radcliffe in reply to me, said deceased told him he was going to have a rest. The next man up said deceased was having a rest. I thought that probably he had had enough, and would go home. We have points were men are stationed to check the runners, so as to see that they complete the course, and I told the man at the next point not to wait as I suspected deceased had gone back. When we returned home, and I found that deceased had not returned, I sent a man on a bicycle to look for him. He returned without finding the deceased and as we were now getting anxious about his absence, darkness then coming on, a party went out to search for him. When they had gone about half an hour I also went, and met a man, who came panting along the road, and who told me about the occurrence. I immediately ran to the nearest barracks, for some blankets and ran back with them, whilst another Sergeant ran to the Sergeant' mess for some brandy. When I got to the spot, which is about 2 ½ miles from barracks, I found him laying close to the hedge about a mile from the Rifle Ranges. He was unconscious, and we tried artificial respiration. We could not get him to drink the brandy. Pte Gordge, of the R.A.M.C. arrived, and after about a quarter of an hour's work at artificial respiration I heard the deceased give a slight groan. Artificial respiration was continued until the ambulance arrived, in about ten minutes, and he was taken to the Military Hospital. I have never knew him to be sick, or fall out before. He was a keen runner, and came out 12th in the battalion race. His last run was on the previous Saturday - a practice run when he did well.
Bandsman Edward Radcliffe, 2nd Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, stationed at the South Front said : I was out with the running party on Friday. We started from the Ropewalk Meadow. I took up about 5th place with McConnell, and about two miles out he made a spurt to get ahead of me. We had been going at a stiff pace. I reserved myself, and he took the lead. He was running some 20 years in front of me for about five minutes, when all of a sudden he seemed to stop. I also stopped, and asked him if he was all right. He said he was, and that he was "fed up" and would have a rest. I again asked him, and he said he was all right, and told me to go on as I would be losing ground. I left him sitting down, and met Sergt. Daly, who asked if the others were all coming on, and I said that they were except the deceased. I finished the run and returned, but did not hear about the deceased as I dine with the band. Deceased sat down about half a mile this side of a farm behind the ranges. On the way to the starting point we were joking, and he said he hoped the pace would not be too stiff.
Pte. F. Gordge, R.A.M.C. said : On Friday I was at the Military Hospital when I was dispatched in an ambulance to the deceased. On arriving I found him just above the hedge off the road. He was unconscious, and his pulse was imperceptible. He was cold. I placed him on the stretcher, and applied artificial respiration for 15 minutes, when I found that I had got some air into his lungs as I heard something like a snore. I stopped to see if he breathed, so as to keep pace with the breathing, and found that the noise continued. I continued the work of respiration all the way to the hospital, and was assisted by Sergt. Daly. Everything possible was done for him and at the Hospital Lieut. Stevens examined the deceased, who was treated without avail. There might have been a chance of saving him if we had known at the time he collapsed.
Lieut. Norman Stevens, R.A.M..C., stationed at the Military Hospital, said : I was present when the deceased was admitted at 7.40 p.m. I examined him, and although he appeared to be dead I applied artificial respiration, in case there might have been any chance of restoring life, but without effect. I subsequently made a post mortem examination, and found the body well nourished and all the organs healthy. In my opinion death was due to over exertion causing heart strain. If he had had immediate assistance he would probably have recovered.
The Coroner, in reviewing the evidence, said that no doubt the extra spurt which the deceased made in passing his comrade cost him his life. He understood that he had not been married long. He could not see that any fault could be attached to anyone.
The Jury returned a verdict of death from misadventure, and said that everything that could possibly be done was done to save the deceased's life.3
