'The partial restoration of the ancient Norman fortress from which the town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne derives its name, has just been commemorated by an entertainment of such appropriate and characteristic splendour, as to redound much to the honour of the originators of the fete, and, we trust, contribute to the advancement of the great work of archaeological skill. Another cause of celebration was the grant of this grand relic of our Norman ancestors to the Antiquaries of Newcastle by the Corporation of the town and Thursday week (the 3d inst.) was the day fixed for the festivity by the members of the Antiquarian Society, to whose taste and learning is confided the work of restoration.'

The Liverpool Philomathic reference library was established in 1863 and catalogues were printed in 1879 and 1893. In 1925, as the Society's financial position worsened, the decision was taken to offer the c. 150 titles from the Library for sale to members, a few of which, chiefly author's presentation copies, are now held in Special Collections and Archives, together with printed Addresses; the Society's Proceedings and Papers are part of the general University Library collections' http://sca.lib.liv.ac.uk/collections/colldescs/lps.html
