The Proceedings of the Old Bailey Ref: t17630114-4
     Trial Summary:
     Crime(s): theft : animal theft,
     Punishment Type: death,
(Punishment details may be provided at the end of the trial.)
     Verdict: Guilty: with recommendation,
     Crime Location: Poplar

     Original Text:
     63. (M.) Thomas Bryan , was indicted, for stealing one wether sheep, val. 18 s. the property of Simon Hillatt , Dec. 23.

Philip Gasioyne . I live at Poplar. I was in my garden about 7 o'clock at night, on the 23d of Dec. I saw Mr. Hillatt's sheep running about the field, which is near my garden; I went and saw the prisoner standing against the fence, and a sheep between his legs: Mr. Floy was with me; I said, what is that man doing? he ran away directly, there was only a ditch between us, we pursued, and in about half a mile overtook him; we took him to Mr. Rogers's, who looks after the marshes, and left-him there, and went to the sheep; it was lying in the skin, which was taken off, and the head was in the ditch. Mr. Hillatt swore to the sheep: he had taken the sheep out of Mr. Hillatt's ground into a field next to it.

Mr. Floy confirmed the account given.

Simon Hillatt . I am a butcher. Mr. Rogers came to me the day before Christmas-day, and told me what had happened; I went to his house the next day, and found the skin to be a skin of one of my sheep; I took that and the sheep home, and took the prisoner before the justice; there he said he was drove to it by necessity; that he had a man with him who told him, if he would go along with him he would shew him where he should have mutton enough; that they went to my field and catched one and killed it.

     Q. What was the sheep worth?

Hillatt. It cost me 18 s. I lost very little by it.

     Q. to Gascoyne. Did you see any body with the prisoner?

     Gascoyne. No, I did not.

     Floy answered the same.

     Prisoner's Defence.

I was coming from Deptford, crossing the river there is a foot way going to Poplar; I saw a man in the field, I asked him if that was the way to Poplar; when I was at the gate the man made away, I staid there about a quarter of an hour, then these 2 men came to me, I went from the place; and they catched me.

     Guilty. Death. Recommended to mercy'*

Her married name was Thompson.1 Alison Davidson Bowie was born on 17 March 1919 at Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland.1 She was the daughter of John Bowie and Agnes Hamilton.1 Alison Davidson Bowie emigrated in July 1920 from Scotland; to Australia with her family.1 She married Arch Thompson on 5 December 1942 at Victoria, Australia; and their marriage as Archie Thompson and Alison Bowie was recorded in Victoria.1,3,2 Alison Davidson Bowie and Arch Thompson are recalled by Alison's Nephew in his Autobiography as follows:

'Alison Davidson Bowie married Arch Thompson who was a cabinetmaker. He was a bit of a character, good fun, liked a drink and in his later life was a good bowler with the Moonee Ponds Bowling Club. They lived in a house in Ormond Rd, Moonee Ponds. Alison was only 2 years older than my sister Nancy and so had little in common with Mum who was 24 years older or Dad who was 40 years older. They were a good couple, full of life and it is a pity we didn't see more of them. Alison moved to Perth some years ago and lived at 80/7 Harmon Rd Sorrento, quite close to [one of ] her daughter[s].2'

Alison Davidson Bowie died on 10 May 2004 at Victoria, Australia, at age 85; and a notice was published in the Herald Sun of Melbourne two days later.1,4 She was buried on 13 May 2004 at Victoria, Australia; according to a Funeral Notice published in Herald Sun of Melbourne.4

John Allison Bowie
(1872-1958)
By kind permission of Mr J. H. Arundel
John Bowie was also known as John Allison Bowie.2 He was born on 15 June 1872 at 50 Main Street, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland; and his birth was recorded at Cambusnethan.3,4,5,6 He was the son of Hugh Bowie and Mary Alison.1 John Bowie was baptized on 14 July 1872 at 50 Main Street, Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland.5 He and Agnes Hamilton were described by Alan Muggeridge as 'John Allison Bowie, born June 15 1872, was raised in Kilsyth, apprenticed as a barber in Glasgow, and became a hairdresser. He married a local girl, Agnes Hamilton (born Jun 28 1873), on June 8 1896. Agnes was the daughter of the manager of the local gas works, and had attended school with John, although one year behind. John left his family in Kilsyth and went to Canada to investigate prospects there - my older sister believes that may have been just prior to WW1. Family legend holds that he returned saying Canada was too cold (might have been winter, perhaps?). In July 1920 John and Agnes left Kilsyth with their children bound for Australia. They were never to return.7,8' John Bowie appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at Meadowhead, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as Son, age 7, birthplace Kilsyth, Stirling, and he was a Scholar.1 He appeared on the census of 5 April 1891 at Str Meadowhead, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as Son, age 19, birthplace Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, and he was a Hair Dresser.9 He married Agnes Hamilton on 8 June 1896 at Scotland; probably Kilsyth, Stirlingshire.10,11,8 John Bowie appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 21 High Craigends, Kilsyth, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as Head, married, age 28, birthplace Wishaw, Lanarkshire, and he was a Hairdresser.10 He emigrated in July 1920 from Scotland; to Australia with his family.12,7 He is recalled by his Grandson in his Autobiography: 'Grandfather Bowie was a typical dour Scotsman doing absolutely nothing in the house. I remember one time when my grandmother was having great difficulty cleaning a saucepan that had been slightly burnt; I suggested that she should use some steel wool. She said she would like to get some but grandfather said it would wear the saucepans out and would not permit it. I spoke to grandfather once about working in Scotland. His barber's shop was in Kilsyth, a village about 12 miles east of Glasgow. Many of the men in the town worked in coalmines in Kirkintilloch. This was a couple of miles from Kilsyth over the hills and the men walked there and back each day. They used to come to him on a Saturday morning for a shave. Shaves cost one penny and haircuts were three pence. Unfortunately they never washed before coming and their beards were full of coal dust and used to blunt and gap the old cutthroat razors...8' He and Agnes Hamilton lived in 1936 at 16 Roxburgh Street, Ascot Vale, Maribyrnong, Victoria, Australia; and they were recorded on the Australian Electoral Roll; he was a hairdresser and she was doing home duties. Also living at this address was their daughter Elizabeth Todd H Bowie.13 John Bowie died in 1958 at Ascot Vale, Victoria, Australia; and his death was recorded in Victoria.7,14
