Edith Julia Morley
'Edith Morley was appointed as Professor of English Language at University College, Reading in 1908'
Edith Julia Morley OBE, JP was born on 13 September 1875 at 25 Craven Hill Gardens, Bayswater, London, England; and her birth was recorded in the September quarter 1875 at Kensington Registration district.1,5,6,7 She was the daughter of Alexander Mosely MRCS and Leah Keyser.1,4 Edith Julia Morley OBE, JP appeared on the census of 3 April 1881 at 25 Craven Hill Gardens, London, England, as Daughter, age 5, birthplace Paddington, Middlesex, and she was a Scholar.1

She was the author of of several books including: The Works of Sir Philip Sidney (1901), Hurd's Letters of Chivalry and Romance with the Third Elizabethan Dialogue (1911) with Richard Hurd, Women Workers in Seven Professions: A Survey of Their Economic Conditions (1914), John Ruskin and Social Ethics (1917), The Teaching of English in Schools (1919), Blake, Coleridge, Wordsworth, Lamb etc. (1922), Fanny Burney (1925), The Correspondence of Henry Crabb Robinson with the Wordsworth Circle (1808-1866) (1927), The Life and Times of Henry Crabb Robinson (1935).8

She appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at 25 Craven Hill Gardens, Bayswater, London, England, as Daughter, single, age 25, born Paddington, London, and she was a 'Lecturer On Literature (School).9' She was Hon. Secretary Reading and District International Advice Bureau; Professor, University of Reading 1908-1940 and was one of the first women professors in a British University. For more biographical information see Who Was Who.

Reading Borough Libraries provide the following article under the title Reading's Great People:

"Morley, Professor Edith Julia (1875-1964) OBE, literary scholar and suffragette

'Born in London, she studied in King’s College, London, later becoming a teacher there. In 1902 she also accepted a post as an assistant lecturer in English Literature and Language at Reading College, later becoming a full lecturer. In 1907 the college was about to gain university status and awarded professorships to all heads of department, except her. Refusing to accept such blatant discrimination against women, she tendered her resignation, which was refused. She continued to agitate and eventually in October 1908 she was awarded her professorship. She was the first woman professor at any British university. The university resented her success, and undermined her by awarding her a chair in English language, when literature was her main discipline; she was also denied a male assistant, as it was said no male academic could be expected to work under a woman. The University was later to recognise her teaching skills and commitment to her students.

'She was an enthusiastic suffragette in the Reading branch of the Women's Social and Political Union. Her position meant she took a prominent place in mass marches and meetings and even had her goods seized and sold because of her refusal to pay taxes. She was also an enthusiastic Fabian socialist, and involved in local politics as a founder of the local Townswomen’s Guild and as a local magistrate. During the Second World War she set up the Reading Refugee Committee and fought passionately for better treatment for refugees; for this work she gained an OBE in 1950. She died and was buried in Reading in 1964'.10,3,11,12,13,14,15

She appeared in The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography where her views on the 1911 Census are outlined in a paragraph as follows:

'The experience of the college parliament at King's encouraged Morley's interest in politics, and at Reading her concern for the suffrage issue led to her becoming a suffragette, joining the Women's Social and Political Union. With characteristic modesty she underplayed her contribution, but, nevertheless, had her goods seized and sold at auction for refusal to pay her rates as part of the tax resistance campaign. She also participated in the ‘No votes, no census’ campaign of 2 April 1911 (spending the night walking with Dr Elizabeth Garrett Anderson), marched in London demonstrations, and was asked by Mrs Pankhurst to use her title to sign a letter to The Times, to aid publication'.16,17

She lived on 29 September 1939 at Reading, Berkshire, England; where she was on the 1939 Register, when she was a University Professor.18 She was honoured in the following notice which appeared in The London Gazette published on the 30 December 1949:

'Central Chancery of The Orders of Knighthood. St. James's Palace, S.W.1, 2nd January,1950.
The King has been graciously pleased to give orders for the following appointments to the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire :—

To be Ordinary Officers of the Civil Division of the said Most Excellent Order:—
     Committee.
Professor Edith Julia Morley, J.P., Honorary Secretary, Reading and District Refugee Society.19'

She lived before 18 January 1964 at 96 Kendrick Road, Reading, Berkshire, England; and her Club was listed as Crosby Hall.20,21 She died on 18 January 1964 at 96 Kendrick Road, Reading, Berkshire, England, at age 88; and her death was recorded at Reading Registration district in the March quarter 1963.22,23,24,25,26 She was the subject of an obituary in The Times with the title 'Prof. Edith Morley, The Crabb Robinson Papers', sub-heading 'Womens Movement'. Covering her life and achievements in some detail, it concluded: 'She leaves many people in her debt' on 21 January 1964.27 She was cremated at Reading Crematorium, Reading, Berkshire, England.28 Her estate was probated on 17 April 1964; and the National Probate Calendar for 1964 records she was of '96 Kendrick Road Reading spinster' and Probate was granted at Oxford 'to National Provincial Bank Limited.23' She was commemorated in several biographies, for example: Professor Edith Morley: The Struggles of an Educated Victorian Woman by By Erin Shearer (2nd Year History BA, University of Reading) dated 2 March 2015, in the Chronicle of 26 March 2015 University recognises first female professor, 'Bossy prof was trailblazer for acedemic women by Georgina Campbell and in many other books, articles and autobiographies such as Another Time Another Place by Margarita Ludovic who was Professor Edith Julie Morley's 15 year old 'evening maid.14,29,30' She was commemorated as follows:

'Britain's first female professor has been honoured by her former university, by having a faculty named in her memory.

Edith Morley was appointed Professor of English Language at the University of Reading in 1908.

After a student-led campaign, the Humanities and Social Sciences Building has now been named the Edith Morley Building.

It was renamed after an annual lecture named in Prof Morley's honour.

The decision to rename the HumSS building - known as 'the maze' by students due to its complicated layout - was made thanks to a campaign by the Reading University Students' Union (RUSU) in 2015.

The University's Ethics Board "felt strongly that the change of name would serve as a fitting memorial to one of the university's most influential academics".Edith Morley: First female professor honoured at Reading

Prof Morley is believed to be the first woman appointed to a chair at a British university-level institution, after becoming English professor at University College Reading (now the University of Reading).

In her autobiography, she described the appointment as "my contribution to the battle for fair dealing for women in public and professional life".

Penny Mordaunt MP officially unveiled the renamed building after giving the annual Edith Morley Lecture, held annually to celebrate her achievements in the field.

The Portsmouth North MP said she was "very honoured" to help rename the building.

Who was Edith Morley?

Born in 1875, and attended Kings College [now Oriel College] at the University of Oxford.
She said that she had not liked being a girl because of the restrictions placed on her activities by Victorian notions of decorum.
In 1908, Morley was appointed Professor of English Language at University College, Reading [Now the University of Reading], thereby becoming the first woman appointed to a chair at an English university-level institution.
She is known for her comprehensive 1935 biography of the writer and traveller Henry Crabb Robinson.'

Amos Charles Tickner Clifton was born on 30 June 1896 at Surrey, England; and his birth was recorded at Kingston record office in the September quarter 1896.2 He was the son of George Amos Clifton and Minnie Cosson.1 Amos Charles Tickner Clifton appeared on the census of 31 March 1901 at Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, England, as Son, age 4, birthplace Kingston, Surrey.1 He appeared on the census of 2 April 1911 at 6 Mill Street, Kingston Upon Thames, Surrey, England, as son, age 14, birthplace Norbiton, Surrey, England.3 He died on 4 October 1916 at Iraq at age 20; and the Commonwealth War Grave Commission give the following information:-

'Name: CLIFTON, AMOS CHARLES TICKNER .Initials: A C T. Nationality: United Kingdom. Rank: Private. Regiment/Service: East Surrey Regiment. Unit Text: 1st/6th Bn. Date of Death: 04/10/1916 Service No: 240721 Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 20 and 63. Memorial: BASRA MEMORIAL.

'Cemetery: BASRA MEMORIAL Country: Iraq Locality: unspecified Visiting Information: NOTE: Whilst the current climate of political instability persists it is not possible for the Commission to manage or maintain its cemeteries and memorials located within Iraq. Alternative arrangements for commemoration have therefore been implemented and a two volume Roll of Honour listing all casualties buried and commemorated in Iraq has been produced. These volumes are on display at the Commission's Head Office in Maidenhead and are available for the public to view. The Commission continues to monitor the situation in Iraq and once the political climate has improved to an acceptable level the Commission will commence a major rehabilitation project for its cemeteries and commemorations. Before considering a visit to Iraq the Commission strongly recommends that you check the advice given by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on the travel section of their website: www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/ Location Information: Until 1997 the Basra Memorial was located on the main quay of the naval dockyard at Maqil, on the west bank of the Shatt-al-Arab, about 8 kilometres north of Basra. Because of the sensitivity of the site, the Memorial was moved by presidential decree. The move, carried out by the authorities in Iraq, involved a considerable amount of manpower, transport costs and sheer engineering on their part, and the Memorial has been re-erected in its entirety. The Basra Memorial is now located 32 kilometres along the road to Nasiriyah, in the middle of what was a major battleground during the first Gulf War. The Panel Numbers quoted at the end of each entry relate to the panels dedicated to the Regiment served with. Historical Information: The Basra Memorial commemorates more than 40,500 members of the Commonwealth forces who died in the operations in Mesopotamia from the Autumn of 1914 to the end of August 1921 and whose graves are not known. No. of Identified Casualties: 40676'

'Herbert A Manville

'One of the progressive merchants of Carberry, Manitoba, is Mr. Herbert A Manville, the subject of this sketch. He is a native of London, England, born 1868, and is a son of the late Benjamin Manville, also a native of the mother country.

'Mr Manville was educated in Gower Street University School, and after putting aside his text books went into the wholesale cloth and woollen business in London, following this occupation for two years. He then entered into a three years' contract with the Hudson's Bay Company and came to Winnipeg in 1883, and on arrival in Manitoba worked for a time in Winnipeg and subsequently at Manitou, Morden and West Lynn. After the completion of this first contract he made another with the Hudson's Bay Company, and for twelve years was one of their most valued employees. In October, 1895, he located to Carberry, and bought out the present business, which is comprised of clothing, boots and shoes, gents' furnishings and hats.

'In 1892 Mr Manville married Miss Rachel Merrett, a native of Ontario. They are the parents of four children: Fred, Edward, Arthur and Charles, the last two being twins.

'Mr Manville has always taken a deep interest in fraternal circles, being affiliated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Independent Order of Foresters, the Maccabees and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. Ever since going to Carberry he has been prominently identified with political affairs, giving his support to the Conservative party. For five years he served as a councillor of Carberry and for one year was mayor of the city. In matters pertaining to the upbuilding of the city he also gives his earnest support, and for one year has served as president of the Board of Trade of Carberry.20' He appeared on the census of 1911 at 12 St E, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada, as Head, married, age 42, born September 1869, birthplace England, and he was a Store keeper.21 He was a Grocer listed in 'Henderson's Prince Albert Alphabetical Directory for 1913' at Saskatchewan, Canada.22 He appeared on the census of 1921 at Leask, North Battleford, Saskatchewan, Canada, as Head, married, age 52, birthplace England, immigration year 1886, and he was a Manager. His Wife, one Son and his Sister-in-law Mildred Walker completed the household.23 He lived on 4 October 1928 at Blackie, Alberta, Canada.24 He celebrated his 99th birthday on 16 September 1967. 'The Calgary Herald' of that day included the following article:

'Man Recalls 1880s Meeting with Sir John a Macdonald

'A Calgarian who remembers talking to Sir John a Macdonald celebrates his 99th birthday here today.

'Herbert Manville, a long-time hardware merchant at Blackie who now is retired, met Canada's first prime minister when Sir John was on a railway inspection tour in Manitoba during the 1880s.

'Bothered a bit now by deafness and poor eyesight, Mr Manville still recalls the incident which occurred soon after he came from England as an apprentice to the Hudson's Bay Company. Upon his arrival, he was posted to a company store at Manitou, Man., 100 miles southwest of modern-day Winnipeg.

'At that time, it was the western terminus of the Canadian Pacific Railway.

'One day Sir John, Manitoba's lieutenant-governor James Aikens and Premier Robert Davis came to inspect the line, which was then being extended toward the Pacific coast.

'The 17-year-old English-born apprentice was introduced to the Canadian leader during the visit.

'"How do you think you will like Canada, young Man?" the prime minister asked.

'"Very much sir; there's no question about it" was the reply. "You look very much like Lord Beaconsfield" he added as an afterthought.

'The remark was something of a compliment, for Lord Beaconsfield was otherwise known as Benjamin Disraeli, Britain's prime minister during the empire-building reign of Queen Victoria.

'HARDWARE CAREER

'Mr Manville spent one more year at Manitou, and then was moved to Portage la Prairie. Soon afterward he began a hardware merchandising career that took him across the three Prairie provinces.

'Five years ago he retired after spending 40 years in business at Blackie, 35 miles south of Calgary.

'Two of his four sons are still living, one of them in Calgary. Fred lives in North Carolina and Charles is at 78 Fyffe Rd. SE.25'

He died on 31 May 1968 at Calgary, Alberta, Canada, at age 99.26 He was buried on 30 June 1968 at Highwood Cemetery, High River, Alberta, Canada.27,28,29,30
