RootsWeb may well be the single most important source of genealogical information
and other sources anywhere on the web. It hosts thousands of family mailing lists, the best
"surname index" available anywhere as well as countless other databases and family
web pages. It is also the home of the well known "ROOTS-L" mailing list. RootsWeb
also has links to hundreds of other good genealogy sites. It will take you a while to become
familiar with all the many RootsWeb resources, but it will be well worth your time.

 RootsWeb's WorldConnect is probably
the best site for searching genealogy files submitted by individual researchers. The search form
allows you to narrow your search by including approximate birth and death dates, name of spouse,
etc. This is also a great site to upload your own genealogy file. And best of all, while
RootsWeb is associated with Ancestry.Com, the information found here is all free!

 Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet is undoubtedly the
single most comprehensive list of genealogy resources anywhere on the web, currently more
than 40,000 links! Be sure to check this one

 The SurnameWeb is a clearinghouse
for links to webpages with extensive information on a particular surname or on the descendants
of a particular ancestor.

 Family Search is the website
of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This search engine allows you to access
information from their International Genealogical Index, Pedigree Resource File, the U. S.
Social Security Death Index and selected census records. This is a good place to look for POSSIBLE
information on your ancestors. However, users should be aware that some of the information found here,
especially in the "Pedigree Resource File" has been submitted by individual family researchers, usually
without any documentation. This data is often riddled with errors -- don't be surprised to find a record
indicating that your ancestor was born several years after his/her marriage! Anything found in the "Pedigree
Resource File" should be double-checked using primary source records.

 Treasure Maps is a genealogy resource filled with of lots of practical "how to" advice, like "what to do when you're up against a brick wall"..

 GenServ is a huge database of Gedcom files submitted by members. It currently contains more than 2,000,000 surnames which can be searched for genealogical information. (There is a $12 annual membership to use this service).

 Google Advanced Search
is probably the best search engine on the web. Be sure to explore its many capabilities. It is
well worth the effort.
