Meyer, George von Lengerke (1858-1918) — also known as George V. L. Meyer — of Hamilton, Essex County, Mass. Born in Boston, Suffolk County, Mass., June 24, 1858. Member of Massachusetts state house of representatives, 1892-96; Speaker of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives, 1894-96; U.S. Ambassador to Italy, 1900-05; Russia, 1905-07; U.S. Postmaster General, 1907-09; U.S. Secretary of the Navy, 1909-13. Died March 9, 1918.
