County, Ill. Born in Boston, Suffolk County, Mass., January 1, 1874. Republican. Served in the U.S. Army during the
Spanish-American War; major in the U.S. Army during World War I; delegate to Republican National Convention from New
Hampshire, 1920; candidate for nomination for Governor of New Hampshire, 1924; candidate for Vice President of the
United States, 1936; delegate to Republican National Convention from Illinois, 1940; U.S. Secretary of the Navy,
1940-44; died in office 1944. Congregationalist. Member, American Legion. Died in Washington, D.C., April 28, 1944.
Interment at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
