GIDEON LEE

Lee, Gideon (1778-1841), a Representative from New York; born in Amherst, Hampshire, Mass., April 27, 1778; attended the common schools; learned the trade of shoemaker and engaged in that business in Worthington, Mass.; moved to New York City and thence to Georgia, where he engaged in the mercantile business until 1807; returned to New York City in 1807 and engaged in the leather business; member of the State assembly in 1822; member of the board of aldermen 1828-1830; mayor of New York City in 1833; declined to be a candidate for reelection; elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Campbell P. White and served from November 4, 1835, to March 3, 1837; was not a candidate for renomination in 1836; retired in 1836; moved to Geneva, Ontario, N.Y.; died in Geneva, N.Y., August 21, 1841; interment in the Washington Street Cemetery.
