Son of James Howard Douglas [Maine] and Annie (Smith) [Canada] Douglas; married 1915 to Dorothy S. Wolff and Emily Taft. Democrat. University professor; served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II; delegate to Democratic National Convention from Illinois, 1948, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1968; U.S. Senator from Illinois, 1949-67; defeated, 1966. Unitarian or Quaker. Member, American Economic Association; American Philosophical Society; Americans for Democratic Action; American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Elks; Delta Upsilon; Phi Beta Kappa. Died in Washington, D.C., September 24, 1976. Cremated; ashes scattered.
