JACOB CROWNINSHIELD
Crowninshield, Jacob (1770-1808) — of
Massachusetts. Born in Salem, Essex County, Mass., March 31, 1770. Brother of
Benjamin Williams Crowninshield; grandfather of William Crowninshield Endicott; great-granduncle of Charles
Francis Adams. Democrat. a Representative from Massachusetts; engaged in mercantile pursuits; unsuccessful candidate
for election in 1798 to the Sixth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dwight Foster; member of
the State senate in 1801; was tendered the position of Secretary of the Navy by President Jefferson, but never
entered upon his duties on account of ill health; ; chairman, Committee on Commerce and Manufactures (Ninth
Congress); Member of Massachusetts state legislature; elected as a Republican to the Eighth, Ninth, and Tenth
Congresses and served from March 4, 1803, until his death in Washington, D.C., on April 15, 1808 U.S. Representative
from Massachusetts, 1803-08 (at-large 1803-05, 2nd District 1805-08); Died in Washington, D.C., April 15, 1808.
Interment at Harmony Grove Cemetery, Salem, Mass.; cenotaph at Congressional Cemetery, Washington, D.C.
