JAMES APPLETON
Appleton, James (1785-1862) — also known as "Father of
Prohibition" — of Gloucester, Essex County, Mass.; Portland, Cumberland County, Maine. Born in Ipswich, Essex
County, Mass., February 14, 1785. Son of Samuel Appleton and Mary (White) Appleton; married to Sarah Fuller. General
in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812; member of Massachusetts state house of representatives, 1813-14; first to
propose state prohibition on the manufacture and sale of liquor, 1832; member of Maine state house of
representatives, 1836-37; Liberty candidate for Governor of Maine, 1842, 1843, 1844. Died August 25, 1862 in
Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts.
