Bliss, Cornelius Newton (1833-1911) — also known as Cornelius N. Bliss — of New York, New York County, N.Y. Born in Fall River, Bristol County, Mass., January 26, 1833. Son of Asahel Newton Bliss and Irene Borden (Luther) Bliss; fourth cousin once removed of Albert Bliss; married, March 30, 1859, to Elizabeth Mary Plummer (1837-1923); father of Cornelius Newton Bliss, Jr.. Republican. New York Republican state chair, 1887-89; Treasurer of Republican National Committee, 1892-1904; U.S. Secretary of the Interior, 1897-99; delegate to Republican National Convention from New York, 1900, 1904. Died October 9, 1911. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, N.Y.
