Notes

In 1827, Adam II came to America with his parents. His father, Adam I received his citizenship and naturalization papers on 9/18/1838 after migrating from Metz, Lorriane (German name Lothringen) France. His mother Margaret came to America at the age of 14 in 1835.

Adam had diabetes for 12 to 15 years and was listed as his cause of death.

Sometime after 1851 the family migrated from New York to Illinois, township of Lyons near the village of LaGrange in Cook County just outside of Chicago. In 1856 the family went to live in St. Louis, Missouri 1861 the family returned to New York for three (3) more years 1864 Moved to Clinton, Iowa then onto Illinois around 1867 1876 Moved to Mount Carmel, Iowa and onto Arcadia, Carroll County which was home for the next 30 years.

Records state nationality as German and place of birth as Germany but at the time the record was made in 1887 Germany had control of Alsace-Lorraine so although today we would say that he was probably born in France, it would probably be correct to say born in Germany. In the census of 1900 it is noted that Margaret gave birth to 11 children but only show that 6 were still living, therefore, lost 5 of her children.

Adam Hoffert in on the American Immigrant Wall of Honor at Ellis Island, panel 521. America is a nation of immigrants. Maybe why Adam and Margaret went back to New York in 1861 was the civil war. Local fighting in some parts of Missouri got pretty bad at this time. Many people lost their lives. Imagine these immigrants, Adam and Margaret didn't want to get involved in any war nor did they want their sons involved in it either. New York where they had first migrated to had to seem a much safer place than Missouri after the start of the war. There was no fighting in New York. This would explain why Peter may have been born in 1859 in Missouri and Benedict born 1863 in New York during the war.
