Census

 

A census of the population of England and Wales has been taken every ten years since 1801 except 1941. The first four censuses 1801-1831 contained virtually no personal information with the 1851 census being the first to contain the names of every individual. To ensure the confidentiality of the information provided, census returns are closed for 100 years, with the 1911 census being the latest that is currently available.

Information recorded in the 1841 census -

- Forename and surname;   

- Age (rounded down to the nearest five for those aged 15 or over);   

- Sex;   

- Occupation;   

- Whether they were born in the county (Y or N);   

- Whether they wer born in Scotland (S) Ireland (I) or Foreign Parts (F)

An address was also shown for each household with house numbers rarely given.  Rural areas mostly state

only village or hamlet.

 

Information recorded in the 1851-1901 census -

- Forename, middle names (usually just initials) and surname

- Relationship to the head of household

- Marital status

- Age at last birthday

- Sex

- Profession or occupation

- County and parish of birth (if born in England or Wales)

- Country of birth (if born outside England and Wales)

- If any disabilities

- (In 1901 only) Employer, Worker or Own Account;  If working at home
