About the Society
The Pointe de l'Eglise Genealogical and Historical Society was organized in the Fall of 1989.
Purpose
The Society was formed:
- To bring together persons who are researching their family history;
- To promote fellowship and cooperation among them;
- To foster, stimulate, and share ideas, information methods and practices in family research.
- To collect, preserve and make available to interested persons, material on family history with special emphasis on research data concerning past and present families in and around Acadia Parish, Louisiana.
- To encourage those officials in charge of public records and genealogical collections to preserve them and make them accessible to interested persons.
- To encourage respect for and the preservation of the family unit.
Membership Eligibility and Dues Schedule
The society welcomes anyone interested in seeking their family lineage and anyone interested in preserving history of our parish through documentation. If you are not yet a member of the Society, we invite you to attend one or more of the meetings, if feasible. If you wish to join, please download, complete and mail a Membership Application along with payment (US funds) for your choice of membership. Membership is effective for the current calendar year when dues are received and application for membership is presented. Members receive the quarterly newsletters, "A la Pointe", for the year of their membership. Membership dues are noted on the Membership Application.
Collection and Disposition of Society Funds
The Society survives on membership dues, volunteer work of members, and funds collected from sales of books published in the name of the Society (e.g., Acadia Parish Cemetery Listings; Funeral Record Abstracts) and public donations. Funds in excess of expected operating funds are typically transferred to the Acadia Parish Library system to improve the range and depth of genealogical and historical research material available to the public.
Quarterly Newsletter
The Society has published a quarterly publication , "A la Pointe", which is mailed to members each February, May, August, and November. The mailing schedule is timed to allow for its arrival prior to the quarterly meeting.
Meeting Schedule
Regular meetings are held on the second Saturday of February, May, August and November.
