The Lao Loum, or lowland Lao, constitute the majority of
the population, about 66 percent and comprise several ethnic groups.
The Lao Loum generally live in lowland valley areas along the Mekong
River. [More] The Lao Theung, or midland Lao, are of Austroasiatic
origin and are probably the autochthonous inhabitants of Laos, having
migrated northward in prehistoric times. The Lao Theung generally live in the
highlands. [More] The Lao Sung (comprising of the Hmong) make up about 10
percent of the population. The Lao Sung generally live in the northern
mountains. The Hmong migrated into Laos (as well as other

various ethnic languages. [More] Laos is a Communist state. [More] Laos is divided into 1 municipality; Viangchan, 1
special zone; Xaisomboun, and 16 provinces; Attapu, Bokeo, Bolikhamxai,
Champasak, Houaphan, Khammouan, Louangnamtha, Louangphabang, Oudomxai,
Phongsali, Salavan, Savannakhet, Viangchan, Xaignabouli, Xekong, Xiangkhoang.
