Alford - Dunmore Cemetery

A brief history of the cemetery... thanks to Shirley Whitmore for the information!!!

The cemetery is probably one of the oldest slave cemeteries in Morehouse Parish. I believe that it was a burying place, before Warren Alford purchase that plantation in the 1840's. Warren and Mary had children born from 1856 forward---many of whom died very young and are buried there on the place. Additionally it is the burying place for many, many blacks, slaves, ex-slaves and their descendants of more contemporary times---who had no blood connection to the Alford/Dunmore descendants. We were just told by a 100 year old woman that her parents and grandparents, and many of the "old folks" were buried there on the Alford place. I think the Dunmore name is misleading---old timers will have passed down to their descendants--Alford Cemetery---so Alford needs to be included in that listing.
