TROJANS TO BEGIN PRACTICE MONDAY

Williamson to Coach Team Through Coming Foot­ball Season

On Monday, September 2, at 5 o'clock twenty boys are expected to report to Coach Williamson for football practice at the high school.

 

Coach Williamson will build a team around six lettermen from 1928. Four letter men were among the graduates in June, while Cason will not be a candidate for the team. Five players from last year are expected to be back and help Coach Williamson shape a team for Tallulah high school.

 

The greatest blow to the Tro­jan team was caused from gradua­tion. Four letter men going the graduation route as well several other members of the 1928 squad. Letter men graduates were Adams, Jack Bethea and J. T. Roy, and Robert Spinks. Harris Hue Devine and J. Gilfoil although not lettermen graduated also.

 

The line received the greatest blow with the center and both tackles not to be in the 1929 lineup.

Lettermen to be hack on the field this year are R. Motley, (1929 c) qb; Hopper, e; Wixson, t; Har­ris, (1928 c.) fb.; Edgerton, fb.; and Rushing, end. Other from the 1928 football squad are Nicols, and Sevier, g.; Riser, t; Rickey, e.; and W. Motley. Howard Massey was a candidate at the beginning of the 1928 season and may enter practice again.

 

The coach and captain are asking that all boys whether light or heavy, to come to the fall foot­ball practice, as they will be per­mitted to try for the team.

 

A successful season is in sight for the Trojan pigskin players ac­cording to the captain. Nine games are scheduled and only two dates are open.

 

The first game is scheduled September 27, which gives the Tro­jans only three weeks of hard practice before the opening game of the season. The first game is With Wisner on the Trojan's field. Three teams that the Trojans did not play in 1928 are on the present schedule, while Rayville and Eudora are not on the schedule. Teams not scheduled last year, but scheduled this year are Wisner, Winnsboro and Mangham. The present schedule has four games to be played in Tallulah, thus offering the fans of the Trojans an opportunity to see at least four good games here. The last game of the coming season will be with Ferriday at Ferriday. The Bull Dogs entered the home field of the Trojans last year and carried off the honors, this year the Trojans plan to enter the field of the Bull Dogs to win. The winner of the Bull Dog Trojan game on November 22, at Ferriday will be the holder of the unofficial championship of the Louisiana Delta pro­vided that other towns in the La. Delta do not enter actual football playing.

 

The following is the 1929 foot­ball schedule:

September 27 —          Wisner at Tallulah.
October 4         –            Crowville at Crowville.
October 11       —          S. A. C. at Tallulah.
October 18       —          Open.

October 25       —          Mangham at Tallulah.
November 1     —          Forest at Tallulah.
November 8     —          Winnsboro at Winnsboro.

November 15  —          Open.

November 22  —          Ferriday at Ferriday

 

Notices have been mailed to twenty boys notifying them the date and time of practice. Boys being sent notices are Edgerton, Howard Massey, Harris, Wixson, J. Rushing, W. A. Rushing, P. B. Thigpen, Alexander, Texada, Herbert Massey, Spinks, Cagnolatti, H. Roy, M. Riser, J. Sevier, W. Motley, Nicols, C. Hopper, and R. Motley.

 

TROJANS OFF TO PLAY CROWVILLE

Coach Williamson left Friday morning with his Trojans Eleven for Crowville, La. This will be the second game of the season for the Trojans, winning the first game of the season from Wisner.

 

The team has just completed four weeks of practice before meeting the Crowville aggregation. The trip was made by automobiles.

 

 

Trojans Win Game From Crowville

Coach Williamson's Tallulah Trojans met and defeated the Crowville aggregation Friday September 27, at Crowville by a score of 6 to 0.

The winning play for the Trojans squad was made by Harris star fullback in the third quarter by an end run for touchdown. The first quarter was mainly a punting duel between the two teams with only one pass being made during the first quarter, and it was made by the Trojans, but it was not completed.

During the second quarter neither team made any outstanding plays, while the Crowville fans were calling to their players to get Raymond Motley, to stop him, but he stayed in during the entire game. Motley, quarterback was unable to get a touchdown for the Trojans as the second quarter came to an end without either a team making a touchdown.

The third quarter was the quarter that Tallulah took the lead in the game after both played an even matched game in the first half. It was probably due to the careful pleading of Coach Williamson that when the third quarter started the locals came out on the field with a new fighting spirit that resulted in them winning the game.

Raymond Motley made a touch­down during the first of the third quarter, but it was ruled ineligible by the referee. About the middle of the third quarter, Harris made an end run for the lone touchdown of the game. The Trojans failed to add the extra point to their winning score.

The Trojans' aerial attack dur­ing the last half of the game seemed to be quite effective, but no outstanding gains were made by the combination play of Motley-to-Harris and Harris-to-Motley.

Jack Rushing, end, played the best game that he has ever played since he has been with the Trojans. It was due partly to the playing of Rushing that the Trojan's squad was able to hold the Crowville eleven down, keeping them from scoring.

"Subs" by the two teams were made frequently as the game went on. During the last half, Harris, no. 14, fullback seemed to be the outstanding player as the Crow­ville boosters were crying out, “Get number 14."

Nicols, guard showed improvements over the past football season of 1928.

In general the Tallulah squad showed careful coaching and thorough training, as they fought a hard fight to win the game from a team much heavier than their own.

Coach Williamson was evidently satisfied with the performance of the first lineup that he used against the Wisner team the Fri­day before the Crowville game for the same lineup was sent in at the first against Crowville; "Subs" were made only in the line while the backfield men played the en­tire game as well as some of the line men.

The local eleven has played two games without a single man crossing their goal line.

Friday the Trojans played the eleven from the St. Aloysius Col­lege at the high school park.

 

TROJANS WIN FROM BEARS BY SCORE OF 7-0

Coach Williamson's Trojan football squad defeated the Mangham Bears on the local gridiron, Friday, October 25, by a score of 7-0. R. Motley and Harris were the outstanding players for the Tro­jans, while Hopper played an ex­cellent game. Brocato of the Mangham squad did not prove to be the player that he is said to be as the Trojan players allowed him but few gains.

The winning play for the Trojans was made by Raymond Mot­ley who caught a pass from Jim Harris and made a touchdown. The extra point was added to the lone touchdown of the game making the Trojan's score 7.

Much to the pleasure of the Trojan eleven and the entire High School the game came to an end with the locals the winner and not a man having crossed their goal line for a touchdown this season. The war cry in the Trojan camp is that a man shall not cross their goal line.
