Betty Gay Cooper Yerger of Baton Rouge, LA passed away peacefully on January 26, 2021, at the age of 81.

Mrs. Yerger, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and retired librarian, was born in Baton Rouge on October 1, 1939. She graduated from Baton Rouge High School in 1957 and attended Louisiana State University (LSU), where she was tapped for Mortar Board and served as President of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In 1961 she graduated from LSU with a double major in French and English. Shortly after graduating, Mrs. Yerger continued her education, earning a Master of Library Science while working at the LSU Middleton Library in the Circulation Department. She was eventually promoted to Head of Circulation and worked there until her marriage to Mr. Rufus Taft Yerger, Jr. in May 1969. After her marriage to Mr. Yerger, a farmer, she moved to Mound, Louisiana where they happily raised a family and enjoyed country life. In addition to raising her family, Mrs. Yerger was an avid reader and enjoyed painting, cooking, traveling, and being active in the community.

As her children grew older, Mrs. Yerger went back to her first love, being a librarian. She worked as a librarian at St. Aloysius High School, where her children attended. She then became Head Librarian at Madison Parish Library in Tallulah, Louisiana. In 1997 Mrs. Yerger and her husband moved to Baton Rouge, where she became Head of Circulation at the Bluebonnet Regional Branch Library. She was quickly promoted to Head Librarian at Jones Creek Regional Branch Library and eventually returned to Bluebonnet as Head Librarian until her retirement in 2006.

Mrs. Yerger enjoyed her time in Baton Rouge, staying close to high school and college friends, as well as participating in a library lunch group.

Mrs. Yerger is survived by Daughter: Paige Yerger Hulsey (Doug) Pasadena, CA, Son: John Sevier Yerger (Melanie) Covington, LA, Daughter: Kathryn Yerger Band (Gregg) Hinsdale, IL and grandchildren: Taft Hulsey, Adam Hulsey, Sarah Yerger, John Yerger, Jr., Bryce Band and Pierce Band; Sister: Kay Hoppe (John) Baton Rouge, LA. Her husband, Rufus Taft Yerger, Jr., her father, Linton Curtis Cooper, and her mother, Kathryn Benton Cooper, of Baton Rouge, LA, preceded her in death. Due to Covid circumstances and other considerations, a private graveside service will be held. A special thanks is given to Dr. and Mrs. John Hoppe and all of her friends, neighbors, and doctors for their caring assistance over the years. Donations may be made to St. James Episcopal Church in Baton Rouge.
