Carl Otis Trimble drowns; Funeral set here Saturday

Carl Otis Trimble, well-known athlete for his football exploits at Tallulah High School and Louisiana 
State University, died Sunday while on an outing with a group on the Tchefuncte River near the State 
Park in St. Tammany Parish.

Mr. Trimble, 21, graduated from LSU and had passed his entrance exam to enter the LSU Law School. He 
was an excellent student, but known for his ability on the gridiron.

At times during the four years he lettered in football at LSU, local sportswriters in their columns 
and the scoreboard at Tiger stadium referred to the Tallulah athlete by inscribing the slogan, 
"Did you notice Otis?"

Trimble first developed his football skills at Tallulah High School and the 1972 high school graduate 
earned all-district and all-state honors enroute to a successful career at LSU.

He played his college sophomore season at the quarterback position after starter Mike Miley decided to 
bypass his senior year of eligibility to play professional baseball. Trimble spent his junior and senior 
years at the wingback position.

LSU Head Football Coach Charles McClendon said Trimble's death is "a great shock to everyone who knew him." 
McClendon said Trimble was called "Magic" by his coaches and teammates because of his ability to catch passes. 
He was LSU's leading receiver his junior year.

Trimble was spending the afternoon with several friends on the houseboat of LSU teammate Richard Romain when 
the accident occurred at about 12:45 p.m. According to a witness, the group had been tubing behind the boat and 
had boarded the vessel to rest and eat. One of the inner tubes got away from the boat and started floating off 
when Trimble decided to go after it. He jumped off the boat and swam up to the tube, but every time he reached 
out it was pushed a little farther ahead of him until the tube was about 45 yards from the boat, the witness said.

After Trimble missed the tube several times, he raised his hand and his friends realized he was in trouble, the 
witness reported. Three of Trimble's friends went to his aid, but were unable to find him underneath the water's 
surface. Romain reported that he got within an arm's reach of the victim, but he went under before he could pull 
Trimble to safety. Trimble was later found by members of the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Department.

Funeral services for Mr. Trimble will be held in the Tallulah Elementary School auditorium at 1 p.m. Saturday in 
lieu of the New Light Baptist Church with the Rev. G. C. Coggs officiating. Burial will follow in New Oakwood Cemetery.

The body will be at the school auditorium from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday for viewing and all day Friday at Tennant 
Funeral Home in Tallulah.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Trimble, Tallulah; one brother, Charles Trimble, Jr., 
Houston, Tex.; one sister, Mrs. Helen L. Cartwright, Tallulah; a cousin, Warren Trimble, and an adopted sister, 
Miss Connie Brooks, Tallulah.

Pallbearers will be Richard Wright, Lee Arthur Wilmore, Arthur Lee, Michael Cannon, Charles (Bugs) Gilbert, 
Jack Folk, Charles Finlayson, and Bill Windham.

Honorary pallbearers will be the 1977 Louisiana State University football squad.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made to the Carl Otis Trimble Memorial Foundation 
in care of Tallulah State Bank. This fund will be used to establish a scholarship in memory of Trimble.
